The Varsity Division is where every student in their second year of competition or greater. Younger students can compete in this division at their leisure.
Event Description
Impromptu (IMP) is a public speaking event where students have seven minutes to select a topic, brainstorm their ideas, outline, and deliver a speech. The speech is given without notes and uses an introduction, body, and conclusion. The speech can be lighthearted or serious. It can be based upon prompts that range from nursery rhymes, current events, celebrities, organizations, and more. No notes or binders are allowed in this event. Use of a notecard will result in not rank being given
EVENT TIMES
The time limit in Impromptu Speaking is 7 minutes with a 30-second “grace period.”This includes both preparation and performance. If there are multiple judges in the round, all must agree that the student has gone beyond the grace period. Should student go beyond the grace period, they may not be ranked 1st. There is no other prescribed penalty for going over the grace period. The ranking is up to each individual judge’s discretion. Judges who choose to time are to use accurate (stopwatch function) timing devices. No minimum time is mandated.
