Unionville Middle School Scrimmage

Dear Coaches:

On behalf of the Unionville High School Speech and Debate Program, it is my pleasure to invite you to the first ever Unionville Middle School Debate Scrimmage, held at Unionville High School on Friday 5/17. This tournament will be an opportunity for students in grades 6-8 to try out different events in a relaxed but competitive environment.

Registration:

Tournament registration will be through Tabroom and can be accessed through the following link:  http://uvillems.tabroom.com and will remain open until 5/14/19, with fees freezing on 5/16 at 3:00 pm. Fees are $10 per student and all funds raised will go to offsetting costs for students from UHS who have qualified to represent Unionville at the NCFL National Tournament in Milwaukee on 5/25. Please make all checks out to UHS Activities.

Schedule:

Registration will start at 3:00. There will be an opening meeting at 3:15, with rounds starting immediately after. All speech events, as well as PF and LD will have three preliminary rounds followed by a final round. Policy debate and Congress will have three preliminary rounds, with final results decided based on their records. There will be a break for dinner, which will be provided by the tournament. Awards are scheduled start at approximately 9:00 pm.

The following events will be offered. As this is a JV tournament, there will only be one division in all events:

Extemporaneous Speaking

Impromptu

 Prose

 Poetry

 Dramatic Performance

  Duo Interpretation

 Declamation

 Original Oratory

 

For the debate events, topics are as followed:

LD: Resolved: The United States ought not provide military aid to authoritarian regimes.

PF: Resolved: The United States federal government should increase its quota of H-1B visas.

Policy: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially reduce its restrictions on legal immigration to the United States.

 

Judges:

All teams will be required to provide judges at the following ratios:

·       Debate: 1 judge for every two entries (or fraction thereof)

·       Speech (including Congress): 1 judge for every 5 entries (or fraction thereof)

High school students are eligible to judge at this event.
