Invitation:

We are pleased to invite you to the 14th Annual Beaver Battles Speech & Debate Tournament, hosted in person at Beaver High School in Beaver, Utah on Saturday, January 11, 2025.

Registration:

Tournament registration will open on Monday, November 11 at 6 a.m. (Registration closes on Friday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m.)

Events:

Debate events will include Public Forum, Lincoln Douglas, Policy, Big Questions, and Old School Congress (with students submitting their own coach-approved bills the day of the tournament).

Speech events will include Original Oratory, Informative, Combined Extemp., Humorous Interp., Dramatic Interp., Program of Oral Interp., Duo Interp., Storytelling, Poetry, Spontaneous Argumentation, Character Sp.Ar., TV News, and Panhandling.

Double Entry:

Students may enter in just one debate event, but up to four speech events. However, be warned! Students double-enter at their own risk and are solely responsible for making it to all designated events on time.

7:45 a.m. Opening Welcome Ceremony (in auditorium) & Judges Meeting (in 116)

8:00 a.m. Speech Round 1

9:15 a.m. Speech Round 2

10:30 a.m. Speech Round 3

11:45 a.m. Lunch

12:30 p.m. Policy Round 1

1:00 p.m. Debate Round 1 (LD, PF, BQ, Congress)

2:00 p.m. Debate Round 2 (Policy, LD, PF, BQ)

2:30 p.m. Congress Session 2

3:00 p.m. Debate Round 3 (LD, PF, BQ)

3:30 p.m. Policy Round 3

5:45 p.m. Awards

Specialized Awards:

Our traditional hand-crafted wooden medallions will be awarded six-deep to winning students, and our famous chewed-off beaver log sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top three "small schools" (1A, 2A, and 3A), as well as the top three "big schools" (4A, 5A, and 6A). Finally, back by popular demand, the Best Dam Beaver award will be awarded to the student who claims the highest number of winning trophies in the most events (students must be designated as a "BDB" competitor by their coach to compete).

Food:

For students: Concessions will be available in the cafeteria. In addition, a food truck will be parked near the front doors of the school between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

For judges & coaches: Breakfast will include donuts from (locally famous) Mike's Bakery and breakfast burritos from (regionally famous) Ernie's Truck Plaza. Lunch will feature popular menu items from (world famous) Beaver Taco. In addition, a food truck will be parked near the front doors of the school between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Student Films:

We will continue our tradition of offering a welcome film in the opening ceremony, and a tournament recap film prior to the final awards ceremony.

Fees:

Student Fee: $5.00 per event entered ($10 for per team event)

School Fee: $25.00 per team

Payable at check-in Saturday morning, based on registration numbers at the Friday noon deadline. Make Checks Payable to Beaver High School Speech & Debate. Credit cards and school P-cards will be accepted.

Judge Requirements:

1 judge per five i.e. entries; 1 per four teams LD/PF/CX/BQ teams.

Please fill all judge requirements; penalty of $25 per judge forfeiture round (the tournament will run smoothly only if we have enough judges).
