Event Description:
- Students will perform their own original spoken word poetry. Each student should prepare between three and five poems, roughly three minutes in length for use during the competition.
- Poems must be the original work of the students and may not use material by published poets.
- Students will perform one of the poems per round during preliminary rounds. Students may NOT repeat poems in preliminary rounds.
- Semifinals may be either the three poems from preliminary rounds or a new poem.
- Poems may be no longer than three minutes. There will be a 10-second grace period. After the grace period has passed, students may not receive the 1st place rank in the room.
- Black books are allowed but not required. No electronics or props may be utilized by a competitor.
- Students are evaluated based on both performance and on the quality of the material they present. This is up to the discretion of the jugdge.
- Students may not use any music/drum tracks/ beats etc. except those that they make with their own bodies (Beatboxing, Chest thumping etc.)
- All other rankings and scorings follow standard interpretation event guidelines.
