Middleton Debate Tournament

2012 — WI/US

Information

A detailed description of the events offered can be found under the "Divisions" tab.

Public Forum Cardinal Cup

Because the Middleton debate tournament offers public forum debaters the most number of rounds, with the most number of entries – we are offering a special award for that division. To teams that register the same exact pair on Friday’s tournament and Saturday’s tournament, we will award the Cardinal Cup to the team that wins the most debates between BOTH tournaments.

If there are ties, we will break them using our standard tie-breaking procedures. (Although, one would hope that over ten rounds there are no ties). If there is a sufficiently large LD pool on both days of competition, we may offer this award for LD. At this time, we can only guarantee that it will be available for public forum. Food Food will be sold at a very affordable price. Hospitality will be provided for coaches and judges throughout the weekend.

Lodging
We have secured a discounted block of hotel rooms for the night of December 7 at Country Inn & Suites. The hotel is only 1 mile away from the high school and offers a free breakfast. Rooms with 2 queen beds (up to 4 people) are available for $75. Please make reservations as soon as possible by calling the hotel and asking for the "Middleton Debate Tournament" rate. After November 20, the hotel reserves the right to reclaim unsold rooms from the block. There are a good number of restaurants near the hotel and it's only five minutes from all of the restaurants and shops in Greenway Station.

Judging Information
You need one judge for every two Public Forum teams, every two Switch-Side Policy teams, or every two Lincoln Douglas teams, per day of competition. You need one judge for each four-person unit. While we are not combining the PF and LD pools, we will hold your obligation toward the combined number. For example, if you register 3 PF teams and 1 LD debater – we will hold you to only two judges. We may move judges around to make this work and it may require some manipulation of your tabroom registration. Please be patient with us.

Also, we are aware that the Tabroom site won't allow you to enter the same judge for both Friday and Saturday in PF or LD. If you want to do this, please alter the person's name (essentially create a different judge) and enter them. Otherwise, we'll manually address this on a case-by-case basis as the tournament nears. Please do not use the system's limitations to short change your judging obligations. Subsequent updates to tabroom have now addressed this issue. For PF and LD, you can enter the same person in both the Friday and Saturday pools.

Middleton is a west-side suburb of Madison. We are pretty easy to get to from the highway, but not necessarily for UW-Madison students without transportation. Additionally, our tournament is close to UW’s finals. We recommend getting commitments from your judges as soon as possible.

Hired judges will be available, should you need them at a rate of $100/day. Yes that is high. We’d rather have your judges than your money.

To help schools find judges, we have setup a judge exchange through the tabroom site. If you are judge and interested in judging for programs at our tournament, please visit our tabroom site and indicate that you are available to judge. We have no idea how well this works, but we figured it would be a feature to some of you.
