Novice Program Oral Interpretation
Event Description:
CBSR Program Oral Interpretation (POI) Rules: If a rule is violated, check the violation box on the ballot, but rank the contestant as you would without the violation. Any penalty will be assessed by tournament officials.
A. The contestant is to present a program of interpretation based on a theme of his/her choice. Each program contains selections or cuttings from different works. At least two pieces of literature that represent at least two separate genres (fiction, nonfiction, poetry) must be used.
B. The introduction shall include the name of the author and title of each selection used in the program. The introduction may be given at any point during the performance.
C. The thematic selections must be interpreted from a manuscript in the hands of the contestant. The contestant's manuscript may only contain text from the selection and introductory materials and shall contain nothing else. The text itself may not be used as a visual aid.
D. The contestant may interpret the selection by referencing the manuscript or may give the selection solely by memory without reference to the manuscript, but in either event must hold the manuscript in his/her hand or hands at all times.
E. The intact manuscript may be used by the contestant as a prop so long as it remains in the contestant's hand or hands at all times. No other props (the use of something extraneous to the body) or costumes are permitted.
F. The performance must begin and end from the center stage area. Contestants must remain in the staging area throughout the performance.
G. The speech shall be no longer than 10 minutes including introductory and transitional materials. There is no minimum time. Exceeding the time limit by more than 30 seconds (grace period) is a violation.
Guidelines for Judging: These are guidelines only, not rules; they should be used only when appropriate to the speech. Keep in mind that there is no requirement that a contestant must use a particular style of delivery. Please use the following questions to help you evaluate each contestant and rank the round.
Purpose: The primary purpose is to present a program of interpretation that combines original composition with oral interpretation using a minimum of two literary selections illustrating a theme/thematic statement of their choice. Though the program is constructed of multiple pieces, it should generally form a cohesive whole.
Selected Literature: Were the selections effectively edited and organized? Was the overall presentation easy to follow? Were transitions in time, character, mood and emotion clearly evident?
Delivery: Did the speaker use effective oral presentation skills (volume, diction, speed of delivery)? Did the speaker demonstrate mastery of performance details (voice, facial expression, body language, and movement) to achieve clarity, force and aesthetic effect in recreating character(s) and situations? Did the speaker convey an understanding of the mood and emotion of the character(s)? Did the speaker consistently portray the character(s)? Was the overall tone and mood portrayed effectively in support of the theme?
