Jack C Hays TFA and NIETOC Qualifier

Please join the Hays High School Speech and Debate team online February 6th for the Jack C. Hays Classic TFA and NIETOC Qualifying Tournament.  The tournament will be run online on classrooms.cloud.  Extemp and debate will be synchronous; all other speech events will be asynchronous.

We will be offering the following debate and speaking events: LD Debate, CX Debate, PF Debate, World Schools Debate, Congressional Debate (Student Congress), Foreign Extemp, Domestic Extemp, Original Oratory, Duo Interp, Dramatic Interp, Humorous Interp, Duet Acting, Informative Speaking, Program of Oral Interpretation, Prose and Poetry.  

We are pleased to announce that our tournament will again be a NIETOC qualifier for students competing in most individual speech events (DI, Duo, Oratory, POI, Duet, Informative, HI and Extemp)  NIETOC bids are determined by contestant numbers, and bid levels will be as follows:

2020-2021 NIETOC bids are gained at the following levels:

0-19 contestants = FIRST PLACE BID

20-34 contestants = FIRST, SECOND & THIRD PLACE BIDS

35-50 contestants = FINAL ROUND BIDS

51-70 contestants = SEMIFINAL ROUND BIDS

71-99 contestants = QUARTERFINAL ROUND BIDS

100 + contestants = OCTAFINAL ROUND BIDS

TFA rules and time limits will be followed in all events. All divisions of LD and PF Debate will use the VARSITY February topics.  

Student Congress will use the Spring TFA legislation.  Prelims will use #1-10 and Finals will use #11-20.

WE WILL NOT BREAK BRACKETS IN DEBATE

World Schools Rounds:

Round 1: Education - This House supports collective bargaining for teachers, including the right to strike.

Round 2: Impromptu

Round 3: Science/Technology - This House would abolish all patents for green technology.

Quarterfinals: Impromptu

Semis: Business/industry/labor - This House supports "Ban the Box" laws.

Finals: Impromptu

Recognition will be given to the finalists in each of the speech events; in debate, quarterfinalists, semifinalists and finalists will be recognized. Sweepstakes recognition will be given to the three highest ranking teams.

The initial registration deadline for entries is Friday, January 29th, 2021.  Changes to registration after Wednesday, February 3rd will need to be emailed to the tournament director at gina.lozano@hayscisd.net.  

To ensure efficiency of the tournament, it is very important that we start on time. Extemp draw is set to start at 7:30 - please make your travel arrangements accordingly.
