The Grandview Zebra UIL Academic Team would like to take a moment to formally invite you and your squad to our annual UIL Invitational Tournament! We are excited to bring back this competition opportunity IN PERSON on February 12, 2022! We will be utilizing UIL Set B materials and will offer competition in all academic events except for Congressional Debate. 

We are excited to announce the following changes for our 2022 UIL Tournament!

Every student competing in Informative, Persuasive, Prose, and Poetry will be guaranteed 3 rounds of competition!

COMPETITION DIVISIONS:

Grandview prides itself in running a large tournament that offers competition for students of all skill levels. We will be separating competitors into two divisions based on school size: 1A, 2A, and 3A schools will compete in the small school division (SS) and 4A, 5A, and 6A schools will compete in the large school (LS) division. Additionally, we will separate 9th and 10th graders away from 11th and 12th graders in Calculator, Math, Number Sense, and Science. 

ENTRY LIMITS:

Each school will be offered unlimited entries in Calculator, Mathematics, Number Sense, and Science. 

Entries are limited to the first 80 students in Informative, Persuasive, Prose, and Poetry. This is split between both divisions. 

Entries are limited to the first 60 students in LD Debate. This is split between both divisions. 

Entries are limited to the first 22 teams in CX Debate. This is split between both divisions. 

Each school is afforded a limit of 4 entries in the in-person divisions Copy Editing, Editorial, Feature, Headline, News, and Ready Writing. Due to COVID protocol, we have a cap of 30 entries per division. 

Each school is afforded a limit of 5 entries in all remaining academic contests. Due to COVID protocol, we have a cap of 50 entries per division.

ACADEMIC JUDGING OBLIGATIONS:

The following events have CRUCIAL needs for graders/judges: Ready Writing, Computer Applications, Journalism. Schools that enter these competitions are expected to provide a trained adult to help in the adjudication of these events. Schools that cannot provide judges for these contests may opt to pay a $75.00 judge fee.* 

For all remaining academic events, each school is obligated to provide a grader in any contest that they enter students in. Schools that cannot provide judges for these remaining contests may opt to pay a $50.00 judge fee.*

*Judge fees are used solely to hire additional judges to help speed up the tournament. This is not part of our profit!

SPEECH/DEBATE JUDGING OBLIGATIONS:

Schools are obligated to provide judges for each of the speech/debate events that they enter students in. Judge obligations are generated with the following formulas:

CX Debate* - One judge required for every 2 teams (or portion thereof).

LD Debate* - One judge required for every 2 entries (or portion thereof). 

Informative/Persuasive** - One judge required for every 8 entries (or portion thereof).

Prose/Poetry** - One judge required for every 8 entries (or portion thereof).

*Debate judges may only enter one pool. They may not fulfill any other obligations. Schools will be charged a fee of $100.00 for each missing debate judge.

**Individual Event judges MAY cover both Extemp and Interp obligations, but they MUST be available for all rounds of both contests. IE judges may not cover any Debate judging obligations. Schools will be charged a fee of $75.00 for each missing IE judge.

Fees are generated with the following formulas:

In-Person Academic Events - $10.00 per entry

Individual Speech Events - $15.00 per entry

LD Debate - $20.00 per entry

CX Debate - $40.00 per entry

Missing Academic Event Grader - $50.00 per event

Missing HIGH NEEDS Academic Event Grader - $75.00 per event

Missing Debate Judge - $100.00 per judge obligation

Missing Individual Event Judge - $50.00 per judge obligation 

JUDGING CONTRACTS:

If you are an individual that wishes to pursue a judging contract (for speech/debate/or writing) at this tournament, please contact Michael Donaldson at mdonaldson@gvisd.org. Please include a brief summary of your qualifications along with what events you are comfortable with judging.

Judges are encouraged to give an oral critique after debate rounds, but this form of feedback should NOT replace a well-written ballot. Additionally, all oral critiques should be short and to-the-point, and all ballots should be submitted of 5 minutes of the round's completion.
