Divisions

Policy

We will offer a Varsity and a Novice Policy division. Both divisions will use the National Speech and Debate Association topic for the 2019-20 season.

Policy divisions will compete on Friday night and Saturday for 5 prelim rounds and then elimination rounds. We attempt to break all winning records, but we reserve the right to use our discretion to determine the appropriate number of elimination rounds. We will not go beyond a full quarterfinal in policy.

Note on Novice Policy

The Novice Policy division (formerly known as the Open Policy division) will adhere to all novice limitations at the Wisconsin State Debate Tournament.

In previous years, we have allowed struggling 2nd year debaters to enter this division, but we will not be strictly enforcing a rule only allowing novices. A novice is defined as a debater in their first year of competition.

Lincoln-Douglas

We will offer one Lincoln-Douglas division. Lincoln-Douglas will use the National Speech and Debate Association topic for November-December of the 2019-20 season.

Lincoln-Douglas will compete on Friday night and Saturday for 7 prelim rounds followed by elimination rounds. We will attempt to break all winning records, but we reserve the right to use our discretion to determine the appropriate number of elimination rounds. We will not go beyond a full octofinal in Lincoln-Douglas.

Public Forum

We will offer one Public Forum division. Public Forum will use the National Speech and Debate Association topic for November-December of the 2019-20 season.

Public Forum will compete on Friday night and Saturday for 7 prelim rounds followed by elimination rounds. We will attempt to break all winning records, but we reserve the right to use our discretion to determine the appropriate number of elimination rounds. We will not go beyond a full octofinal in Public Forum.

Entry Deadline & Fee Freeze

All entries as of 5:00 PM Tuesday, December 3 will be responsible for the fees of the registered entries. This deadline is one day earlier than most Wisconsin tournaments. If you need to make name changes after this date, please contact the Operations Director.
