I debated 3 years at Baltimore City College High School. The first year of my high school career I did mainly Policy Debate. The last two years of my Debate career I delved into the Kritik on both sides of the Debate. The majority of my arguments were mostly race theory and arguments about antiblackness.
I mostly debated the k and I love kritiks. I think that a kritical perspective is important for opening the activity to more marginalized experiences. I believe that it can be productive both for the sport and for the community.
Paradigm
Despite my love for Kritiks and Race arguments, I will admit that I am less biased than most with my orientation. When I watch and Judge debate, I will do my best to listen carefully to the actual arguments being made and will vote on almost anything if you win the debate. I believe that debate should be about even competition that is based on what is said in round and how it effects the outside world. In terms of argumentation I believe in truth and tech almost equally, with truth just weighing slightly higher on the scale. This means that a conceded argument is true, but within context of reason. I do value the flow; and it still has a major impact on my decision.
I am fine with spreading; just be clear and slow on tags.
For K teams
For K teams, explain arguments and links. If I do not understand why things are the way they are or even how the Alternative solves for things. then I will have more trouble voting you up. Do yourself a favor and impact and explain each claim you make. For those reading Kritiks I believe a genuine belief and representation of the arguments your talking about is important. Also, if your an all white team that reads a race k against poc I will likely not vote on it unless it has a legit (and I mean hardcore legit) link. That being said in any situation, I will try my best to be open minded.
Policy v Ks/plans with critical advantages
For Policy Teams that are on the Aff and are going against such arguments; do not break out k-ish advantages for a super policy Aff. You should just read what you want and the do the neccessary level of argumentation to win against such arguments. If you naturally read policy affs that have a k twist; then that is fine.
Topicality
In order for me to vote on Topicality; it really needs to be impacted out. There should probably be more to the Standards part of the Debate other than education and Fairness. (Recently that has been the only extension of T that I have heard in debates that I have judged.) If it is education and Fairness you need to answer the questions of "why is the model of debate that you are advocating for producing important? Other questions such as, "what is the type of education you are producing/why is that good?" What is fairness and why does that matter in this Debate especially against the opponents Impacts. These are the the types of questions that need to be answered in addition to answering the other teams arguments in order to get my ballot. Answering these questions are probably not strictly regulated to folks who run T/FW...., but I have found that the explanations to these questions have been severely lacking in the majority of rounds that I've judged with teams who have brought up this argument. This is why I put this explanation here. I will admit; I am more open than I used to be, but I still do not believe that you were forced to run T. However, I will vote on it if the necessary work is done. In terms of articulation I would be interested in hearing a critical spin on Framework argument that talks about why the State focus may be good politically for (whater K is being talked about.) I am good on theory, so if you run it I'm cool. I'm more geared towards social political justice arguments, but whatever.

I have been coaching at the Naval Academy since October 2016, and before that, I coached Cathedral Prep from 2014-2018. I debated on the national circuit in high school and qualified to the TOC twice, but I didn’t debate in college.
Most of my research and coaching is geared toward the K, but I feel comfortable evaluating a da/cp or da/case debate. I often think that the K is the best way to exploit the weaknesses of the affs that I hear, but that doesn't mean you have to take this route.
When debating in front of me, I'd highly recommend developing the implications to your arguments as soon in the debate as possible. In close debates between technically proficient teams, this is especially important. I appreciate it when a debater is creative and tries to relate to me rather than debating like a computer and into their computer.
Virtual Debate
I'd like to make things as easy as possible for you, and you're welcome to set up your speaking/video/microphone situation in whatever way makes you most comfortable.
On my end, I'm still learning how to adapt to zoom debates. There seems to be a lower ceiling on arguments I can process through zoom. This is especially the case on theory debates. If you could help me out by slowing things down, I'd appreciate it.
Debate doesn't translate directly from in-person to zoom. There are some limits that we haven't yet come to terms with, but there are also some possibilities (screen sharing comes to mind) that could be interesting, and you're welcome to experiment with that in front of me.
2021 College Topic
There's an important distinction between labor antitrust and consumer antitrust. In labor antitrust, independent contractors and labor unions are considered the businesses with whom the government is interested in limiting anticompetitive business practices. From the most straightforward reading of the topic, aff ground doesn't seem to allow for much labor antitrust. This would have been a significant consideration in at least half of the debates that I have judged so far.
Because of my academic and professional background, I've thought a lot about labor antitrust, monopolies, market power, and the suitability of the law as a remedy to these issues. To disclose a personal bias: I think that there are significant limits on the capacity of antitrust. That's not to say that I don't think there are many instances in which changes to antitrust law would be a good idea. Nor do I think that there aren't radical possibilities in antitrust. But its limits have become relevant and convincing in kritik debates in which the aff takes for granted the fundamental radicality of their proposal. I think this topic would be worthwhile if the debate community reckoned with those limits. In other words, Robert Bork was a real-life sicko, but so are most people, albeit in less apparent ways, who think that Amazon would stop being a problem if a judge told them to knock it off.
T
- I'm not in touch with community consensus so you might be able to use that to your advantage.
- I really enjoy a good T debate and don't have any strong inclinations toward fairness or education as the ultimate standard.
- I like definitions that define a word as close in a contexts as possible to the other words of the resolution
- I'm often disappointed by T evidence quality. For this reason, source/Expertise/qualifications debates tend to be pretty important. Just because a judge wrote it in a decision doesn't make it a relevant expert definition. Just because the usfg is defined in a certain way in the Bill Emerson English Language Empowerment Act of 1997, doesn't mean it's the best way to understand usfg for debate.
- Debating in the Pennsylvania has given me a comprehensive understanding of inherency as a procedural argument if you want to go there.
"T" (Framework)
- In the last dozen or so framework rounds that I've judged, the neg has won or lost based on whether they had a compelling claim to significant offense.
- It's frustrating to judge a framework debate wherein framework is deployed as a replacement for debating the case. I get that this is tied in some way to the "ground" and "unpredictability" aspects of the arguments you're advancing, but a failure to contend with fundamental questions posed by the aff can come across more as a sin of the neg.
- For me, framework is most useful as a neg strategy in debates where affs are needlessly obscure or cynical.
Disads
- I evaluate the link first, and I think it's a yes/no question which controls the direction of uniqueness.
- Most of the best answers to politics disads I've seen aren't necessarily carded answers to the U/L/IL/I parts of a disad, but arguments about the nonsensical nature of certain parts of the politics disad as applied to the aff.
- Although I don't cut politics files, I'm extremely aware of what's going on and familiar with who's writing what about Congress and the White House.
- I really like impact turn debates.
- Except in cases where something sophisticated is going on, it's usually a waste of time to read evidence that "warming isn't real" or "warming isn't a pressing issue." Go after the internal link, go after solvency, turn the impact, solve the impact. It's hard to convince me that warming isn't an immediate, urgent, and moral concern, but I'm skeptical that the only thing we need to do is develop the right tech or enter certain climate talks with sufficient leverage.
Counterplans
- I won't kick the counterplan for the negative unless the negative persuades me to do otherwise.
- There's a fine line between creative, technical counterplans and a contrived trick. Avoid the contrived tricks. I enjoy a creative and technical counterplan, but these aren't the kinds of arguments I spend a lot of time thinking about, so you'll do well to simplify your explanation of it as much as possible.
Kritiks
- I’m most familiar with psychoanalysis and Marxism (including left criticism of Marxism, Marxist criticisms of leftism, and Marxist critiques of other Marxisms).
- I spend a lot of time thinking about labor because of my day job.
- I first look at role of the ballot/role of the judge arguments when I'm rendering a decision, so these arguments tend to have a strong effect on the outcome of a debate.
- The perm, which is tied in important ways to the role of the ballot, tends to be the aff's most strategic line of pursuit.
- I'm willing to stop the debate and give someone a loss for using flagrantly inappropriate language.
- I've noticed that, on very many occasions in which a K debate was underdeveloped, I have recommended the second chapter of Wretched of The Earth to both teams.
Theory
- Reject the argument is the default. Spend time on the impact level to convince me to reject the team.
- I heard recently that nobody votes on multiple conditional worlds bad anymore. I guess that means I'd be more willing to entertain this argument than the average judge.
- Against affs which don't read a typical plan text or defend the resolution, I would prefer to hear a nitty-gritty case debate rather than a framework debate. This is a strong preference.
- When debaters unsuccessfully extend framework in front of me, the unsuccess is usually a result of disorganization, a lack of adaptation of pre-written blocks to the specific aff arguments, and my inability to interpret the significance of an abstract debate concept.
- If you go for framework, make sure you clearly implicate the stakes of winning a section of the debate. What I mean by this is that you shouldn't assume we're on the same page about what it means to win, say, that there exists a topical version of the aff, or your limits disad, or the benefits of switch-side debate, or etc. Leave nothing flapping in the wind in the 2nr.
Style
- I enjoy humor a lot.
- Speeches are best when they're persuasive performances; I don't enjoy monotone spreading.
- I like when debaters make smart cross applications from a flow the other team tried to kick out of.
- If the chips are down, flip the table. If, going into the rebuttals, you know you're losing 99% of the debate, see if you can explode that 1% into a win.

I haven't done much research for the high school and college topics this year, I'm in law school now which has occupied a lot of my time. Having applied my debate experience in professional and further academic settings, I think that good communication, critical thinking, and research skills are invaluable just about anywhere you go. To this end, moving into 2024 I hope to use speaker points more and more to reflect how I think the content of the debate has been presented.
One thing I wanted to be sure to put up top: please be nice to each other.Debate is a communicative, collaborative learning activity and it loses that value when someone feels extremely uncomfortable. I like to promote a friendly atmosphere in the rounds I judge. The good you put out in the world will come back someday!!
Presentation
Speed - I ask that you speak at about 80% of your top speed. Please have a brief pause when in between flows. I am willing to say clear up to 3 times for all debaters. For T, theory, analytics or reading your blocks, please go slow and use inflection.
Organization - At the end of the day, debate is a communicative activity. Numbering, roadmapping, and labeling are good practices and make it easier for me to understand and for your opponents to clash. To this end, I don't think that embedded clash is nearly as easy to follow as standard numbering, embedded clash only works in front of me if you slow down and use plenty of emphasis. If you are one to fly through pre-written blocks or overviews without pauses or emphasis, I would seriously reconsider how you make arguments in front of me. I want to listen to you and make the best decision I can, otherwise you won't be happy with my choice or your speaks.I think an overview should be 30 seconds at most, otherwise you aren't spending enough time on the line by line.
Extensions - Do NOT just say an author name and assume I know what you're talking about. I'm bad with names already and will hardly remember the 36 new ones that I'm supposed to know in these 2 hours! Referring to a number, a tag, and an impact will increase your chances that I will know where you're at and flow your arguments adequately.
Cross-Ex and Speaking for partner - I am fine with open cross ex, but don't hijack or take over your partner's questioning or answering. They are supposed to be the person in charge of this! Generally, I don't like partner's interjecting in the speech, it's not something I feel that I should be flowing. Saying pointers here and there is a-ok, but please don't get to the point of being super duper distracting to your partner! Abuse of this in speeches and cross ex will affect speaks.
Evidence Standards
I appreciate teams that read author qualifications - It's how I debated all four years of college, it is not a hard thing to do . If you are proud of the evidence you researched, reading the author's qualification gives you more authority.
I am disheartened by teams just finding evidence from wherever and throwing it in a doc. I would consider myself a good judge for evaluating evidence indicts and shady evidence practices. I could see myself very likely voting on this if there is a bad example of it.
I should not have to look at the un-underlined portions of your evidence to understand your author's arguments. I personally do not think that the shrink function in verbatim should ever be used for evidence.
Pace of the Round
Prep Time - Most tournaments fall behind schedule. Inefficiencies cut into decision time that affects the quality of my decision and your feedback. Please be efficient, especially in between speeches and prep time.
I will be understanding of tech fails, but not as much negligence. Anything that could have been fixed prior to the round (Dealing with your laptop’s issues, finding your flows, looking for evidence, figuring out how to operate a timer, setting up stands, etc.) will generally frustrate me and may affect your speaks in some of the more egregious cases.
Other Things:
-Please time yourselves - I will generally time too, but it's important for organizing your speech, it ensures that you stay on pace and make all the arguments that you want to.
-Politics DA - Beyond debating case, this was my second favorite thing to research and argue. I actively work in maryland state politics so these types of arguments are really something I can appreciate!
-CPs - I personally think 2 conditional advocacies are goldilocks, but can be persuaded on condo given specific examples of abuse. My tolerance for CPs gets lower with no solvency advocate in the 1NC or if it is a weird and over-complicated uniqueness CP. I really don't like the multi-plank CPs that are all very different ideas, unless there is an author that advocates all of them happening at once. I'd be persuaded by a theory argument, for instance, stating that such a multi-faceted advocacy cannot be predicted since it is not within the literature.
-Ks - I have limited experience running them since high school and relatively small knowledge on most literature bases. I'd need more in depth explanation of your arguments and appreciate using the K against the case to get specific links to the aff or interesting case turns. Definitely don't want to discourage anyone from running one though, I really enjoy overviews that are specific to things happening in the round.
I have been involved with Policy Debate since 1999. I competed in high school from 2000-2002. I also taught at a debate camp for BUDL in 2006.
Since 2002, I have judged at local and national high school debate tournaments. I also judge at various elementary and middle school league tournaments.
I have been described as a liberal judge. I like all of the argument types. I encourage every student to run their arguments in a well-structured and organized fashion. I can handle speed and spreading.
I do provide my email address on every ballot. It is listed below for your convenience. My ballots are usually detailed based on the flow of the round. I flow (take notes) nearly the entire round. I believe that we can all stand to learn from one another. I am also an advocate of research. Analytical arguments are good too. I prefer clash, refutation, and impact calculus during the debate round.

**Updated 10/3/2018 : I have not judged on this topic and have not been super involved with debate this year (sad face). I just think that is an important PSA. That said, and I think this is very important to “reading me as a judge” (whatever that means), I care a great deal about this activity and about the people inside of the debate. I will work extremely hard to keep up with the debate and stay on top of arguments and the flow.

**A lot of this is still from Lindsey Shook's paradigm. I am no where near the same judge as her but I learned much of my views on debate from her and so her paradigm reflects the judge I wish I could be.
I debated for James Madison University. During my "career" I won a few tournaments and qualified for the NDT twice -- take that as you will.
Big Picture: I will judge the way you tell me too as much as I can. I attempt to evaluate debates based on what is said in the debate and I would rather you explain your arguments in depth than read a billion cards. That said, I will still probably read lots of cards because I like to understand the arguments I am voting on the best I can.
CLASH DEBATES
Framework:
Framework as a theoretical issue is unpersuasive. You are not likely to convince me that a K should not be allowed in debate. Since that is true, you should just read the evidence and make arguments about why your view of how I should evaluate impacts is best. So if you are a policy team on the aff debating a K team do not expect me to vote on your interp that the neg must have a policy option or that they shouldn’t get to K representations. I will vote on impact turns to the K or to the framework (these are usually part of theoretical framework debates anyway). In front of me you are better served to substantively defend your view of debate then try and convince me any particular position should just be rejected.
In a framework debate I will be persuaded by super specific and carefully thought out meta-arguments. If this describes your style of debating framework then I am probably familiar with what you will be doing. If that is not how you debate framework, I will judge what I see regardless and it is up to you to explain your argument. TOPICAL VERSION IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME AS A JUDGE. A good topical version debate is extremely welcome.
Topicality:
I think affs should have some relation to the topic. The more nuanced and interesting the better, but a relation to the topic is important to me (I am pretty persuaded by topic education arguments). HOWEVER, topic education to me can take many different shapes and is not just about what we do but can also be the ways different bodies or power structures are influencing the world around us and how that should change what we do.
A couple of important notes I find myself thinking more and more:
1. I am unlikely to be persuaded that debating topicality is the worst kinds of violence. You can absolutely win your impact turns in front of me about why T is a problem I would just prefer you explain your metaphors and have depth and reasons and examples that contextualize how topicality mirrors or causes the problems you highlight. Nuance is very important for me in these debates and if you have nuanced reasons you are likely in good shape. The more broad and generic your claims are about ALL T or ALL K teams OR ALL policy teams the less persuaded I am.
2. That being said - inevitability and uniqueness matter in debates about the impacts to topicality and I take those questions seriously and find they are often where decisions begin for me.
3. I find that topical version of the aff and your argument is inaccessible tend to be the two arguments that I most often see winning these debates. Deal with those or wait for me to explain why you lost on them. If both of them exist - then having comparisons based on why T version overcomes that accessibility problem or fails to is important.
4. Given that I am a fan of nuance it is unlikely I will believe the generic "they said cap and T that means they lose." So these arguments are winnable I just think they need to have some specificity and account of what is happening in that debate in particular.
5. Going for T against a plan that someone is defending the implementation of is also fine in front of me. I think you need to win why the world of debate is made specifically worse by what they do and justify so impact level comparisons matter a lot in these debates. I can also be persuaded that cards and definitions are too bad to be considered in these debates if they are just random statements about what someone thinks a word means.
I tend to believe that if you can have a plan you should defend it. If you are not topical you will be better off in front of me if you can prove that you provide unique insight about the topic that traditional policy affirmations miss.
PLAN IS IMPLEMENTED AND MATTERS DEBATES
Disads, Counterplans, kritiks, case debate – the more specific the better. If you are going for a super technical CP or obscure DA or K then you should probably take a second and slow down the explanation of why it applies to the aff. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE BECAUSE I HAVE LIMITED EXPERIENCE ON THIS TOPIC. Given that I don't always know the TRUTH in these debates and that decision times means I can't read every card for you and put the whole debate together these debates are often won by the team that is controlling the WAY I read or interpret the evidence and examples/story of the arguments. You should take that as explain the argument instead of reading the 7th card on a topic. Random notes about these debates:
1. I think teams with big policy impacts are often silly sounding when they go for perms since that is almost always illogical and they are basically just going for case outweighs anyway. Seriously just go for your aff is awesome and outweighs and its representations or assumptions are good/justified.
2. I am willing to vote on presumption.
3. I am not a believer in the offense/defense paradigm - you can win zero risk of links, impacts etc. If you debate the internal links of a disad in front of me I will be very likely to reward you in speaker points. That said these arguments should be well thought out and thorough.
K vs. K DEBATES (method or not) –
1. Someone at some point needs an external impact. Debates that end up with everyone winning some risk that they solve some violence and oppression while the other team may cause some violence and oppression can be frustrating for me, especially when there is little comparison between impacts. I am extremely persuaded by systemic/opression based impacts, but I need to know why to care about these in a debate where I am told to forefront larger war/extinction based impacts. Otherwise you are really relying on me to be persuaded by one internal link/solvency story or the other.
2. Root cause debates - are almost impossible to resolve. You have to put in a lot of work or it has to actually be conceded. I find that questions of solvency for the alt and the aff are FAR more important than controlling the root cause. Talk more about HOW things work and WHAT they solve rather than saying the thing you hope you solve is the root cause of the thing they hope they solve.
RANDOM NOTES ABOUT ARGUMENT ETC.
Please be nice. I am not one to enjoy unnecessary hatefulness or aggression. I love aggressive and expressive people but there is a difference between aggression and needless angst/hate. Additionally, I have lots of facial expressions during debates. These facial expressions may or may not be relevant to what you are saying in the debate, take that however you want.

***2019 NDT/TOC Update***
1) Background
A) College- I have judged fewer than 15 college debates on the executive powers topic. I have done some research on it.
B) High school- I have judged fewer than 20 high school debates on the immigration topic. I have done significant research on it.
C) I have legal knowledge as a background. Rarely has it made any difference in a debate. It has helped in cutting cards in providing a context I would not otherwise have regarding legal processes.
2) Debaters should be better at resolving debates and providing relative comparisons at a meta-level. Tell me why you have won a particular portion of a debate AND why that matters relative to the remainder of the debate.
3) Specificity matters to me. I have found over the course of judging that debates in the abstract are the most difficult to judge. Whether it is the specificity of a disad link or an explanation of limits on T, specificity to the context of a particular debate is critical in terms of how you contextualize your arguments.
***Old Update***
So I thought about my previous philosophy, and I didn’t think I would like it if I were a debater and read it. So I will try to provide (hopefully) more useful insight into what I think about debate. I have no idea what situations will occur and what defaults I may have given my limited amount of judging, but I think explaining what I thought about debate as a debater will help.
I just graduated from college, having debated for 4 years in high school at Loyola Blakefield and 4 years in college at the University of Mary Washington.
The way to get me to vote for you is to tell me what to vote on and how to evaluate it. Force my hand, think about the debate from a holistic perspective. Compare arguments. Make even if statements.
What did I really value that I got out of debate?
Fun- I thought debate was a ton of fun. Thinking quickly on my feet, trying to predict what people would say, cutting a ton of cards. I loved debate.
Critical thinking- I do not think anything ever made me think as hard and as complexly as debate. Limited prep time, strategic decisions needing to be made. Thinking about the best arguments to be made against a certain team or with a certain judge. Thinking the way debate teaches has helped me in undergrad, law school, and in life. It teaches a certain way of thinking that is invaluable.
Advocacy- debate taught me how to make an argument, and how to win it in front of anyone. Strip debate of the jargon, and you know how to make an argument in any context. It enhanced my paper writing and has helped me in a lot of situations I think.
How did I get this out of debate?
Rigorous testing. Equitably difficult debate where both teams rigorously test each other’s arguments produces an activity that I found fun, helped me to think critically in quick and strategic ways, and taught me how to make arguments efficiently. I fundamentally think that debate is about rigorously testing positions. You can have debates about anything, but I think this is how I would describe it to people outside of debate and is what debate should be in my normative world.
Why does this matter?
It shapes what I think about debate positions, or is my default for evaluation. This is one of many possible frames I could use. But this is where I start, and it shapes my perception of topicality, to CP competition, to Ks, to theory, to speaker points.
FW
I do think I am open to listening to alternative constructions of debate, but what that is and looks like needs to be tangible to me for me. The team that answers the question- what world of debate is most equitably rigorous wins. My presumption about rigorous testing can be challenged, and I do not know what I will think once I start judging. It is my default though. I think the topic has value insofar as it sets a stasis for argumentation from which rigorous testing commences. Topical version of the aff arguments are good, but not necessary for the neg. For the aff (saying debate bad), I think uniqueness arguments about exclusion are persuasive. I think the closer the aff is to the topic, the more persuasive reasonability becomes.
Topicality
Topicality debates should be grounded in the literature. I tend to think limits are a controlling issue in T debates because they determine whether the neg has the opportunity to rigorously test the aff. Caselists are useful for either side.
I think arguments contextual to the topic are useful. I think T is important on the oceans topic given its enormity and the lack of unified negative ground. For the aff, I am compelled by aff flex arguments like its and generic CPs make the topic awful.
CPs
For most CPs, I probably default to reject the argument not the team. I do think there are arguments that can be made that bad CPs are a reason to reject the team, but it is not my default presumption. There are two questions that I think are important to answer- does the CP rigorously test the aff AND how critical is the CP in the literature? I do think that most CP theory debates are invariably shallow which makes evaluating them difficult.
Conditionality does not differ for me from other CP theory in that the question is about rigorous testing. I do think conditionality is rampant. I think contradicting positions are bad, but can also have different implications in debates- does using the same reps you k’ed mean that perm- do the alt is legit, or that the alt fails? Probably. Contextualizing conditionality to the specific practices done in the debate makes the argument very persuasive.
My presumption is against intervening to kick the CP for the 2nr. If I am told to do it, I might if the aff drops the argument. If they don’t, I probably won’t.
College teams – Pics- I am not completely sold that all/nearly all is the death knell for pics on the college topic. My presumption for pics being good makes me think this is a debatable question, even if the resolution tries to write this out of debates.
Ks
I think topic-specific critiques can be interesting because they rigorously test the aff. Whichever team controls the role of the ballot typically wins, and neg teams should invest more if the role of the ballot is distinct from my presumption of testing. I also do not think it is strategic for K teams to not answer the aff explicitly – dropping the 1ac usually means I vote aff – meaning my bar is higher on voting for “x comes first”/ “x means the whole aff is wrong” args. Generalizations do not test the aff. Dropping the 1ac does not test the aff.
I think try or die is how I think about ks. Ks that are the strongest in persuading me control the impact uniqueness of the debate. I find aff arguments about trends in the status quo more important than other people because of that (for example, if the environment is sustainable, winning a consumption k becomes much harder). Affs should focus on alt solvency and how to evaluate impacts.
Disads
I tend to think the link controls the direction of the DA, but can be persuaded that uniqueness does.
I think zero risk is possible.
I think turns case arguments really help the neg. I think unanswered turns case arguments by the block in the 1ar are difficult for the aff to come back from.
General
You will receive a bump in speaker points if you read quals.

Short version
I just graduated from college, having debated for 4 years in high school at Loyola Blakefield and 4 years in college at the University of Mary Washington. I have not judged so much that there is a predisposition that is so strong not to be able to be overcome. You do you, most things are up for debate. I prefer specific strategies over general strategies regardless of what those strategies deploy. I prefer CP/Politics or Politics/Case debates. I think the real way to being happy with a decision from me is to tell me what to do and how to assess arguments in the debate. The team that tells me what to do at the end of the debate and has the best reasoning for it will win.
I like hard work. Debaters that work will hard will be rewarded for doing so. I will also work my hardest to give every debater the credit they deserve while I am making a decision.
Coaches who have had a formative impact on me – Adrienne Brovero, Daryl Burch, Tom Durkin.
Judges I liked that I would like to be like – Lawrence Granpre, Scott Harris, Fernando Kirkman, Sarah Sanchez, Patrick Waldinger. I promise I will not be as good as these people, but I use them as a model for how I want to judge.
Background
I was a 2a and a politics debater in college, and a 2n that relied on the cap k and topicality in high school. I have done significant research on the oceans topic, and a little on the college topic.
FW
I default policymaker. I think the topic is set up to be instrumentally affirmed. Again, not so much so that I will not listen to other arguments or perspectives. For the neg, I am strong believer in fairness as well as the skills that debate teaches. I think predictability is necessary for debates to happen. Topical version of the aff arguments are good, but not necessary for the neg. For the aff (saying debate bad), I think uniqueness arguments about exclusion are persuasive. I think the closer the aff is to the topic, the more persuasive reasonability becomes.
Topicality
Topicality debates should be grounded in the literature. I tend to think limits are a controlling issue in T debates. Caselists are useful for either side.
I think arguments contextual to the topic are useful. I think T is important on the oceans topic given its enormity and the lack of unified negative ground. For the aff, I am compelled by aff flex arguments like its and generic CPs make the topic awful.
CPs
For most CPs, I probably default to reject the argument not the team. That does not mean that I think that all CPs are good OR that I would be unwilling to vote on a cheating CP. I do think that most CP theory debates are invariably shallow which makes voting on them difficult. Most teams get away with bad/illegitimate CPs because the aff is terrible at executing, or the neg has some trick. I also think the more contextual a CP is within a set of literature, the harder it is to beat on theory questions. I have no predispositions on CP theory – I am willing to listen to it.
Conditionality is different than other CP theory args for me. It is certainly excessive most of the time. It gets egregious when positions contradict. Contextualizing conditionality to the specific practices done in the debate makes the argument very persuasive.
College teams – Pics- I am not completely sold that all/nearly all is the death knell for pics on the college topic. My presumption for pics being good makes me think this is a debatable question, even the resolution tries to write this out of debates. I think what is “nearly all” is what the literature says it is. I am also compelled that maybe the topic is so bad that these pics are important for the neg.
Ks
I think topic-specific critiques can be interesting. The more specific to the topic, and the more specific to the aff, the better. Whichever team controls the role of the ballot typically wins. An argument has a claim, warrant and some level of interaction in the debate. A dropped argument needs to be specifically flagged as a round winner and still needs to be fully impacted and weighed against other arguments in the round. That being said, stupid arguments in which you very much out tech a team and or they drop arguments, I will clearly vote for in a second. However, I probably think that running said stupid args may lower your chances of receiving better speaks. Evidence - I probably won't read a lot of evidence but I am not averse to it. I put a very high premium on your ability to communicate arguments to me.

Topicality/Theory - Competing Interpretations are good. Reasonability is smart to go for on the aff if you can't generate offense however you need OFFENSIVE reasons why reasonability is good. Limits and ground matter - create impacts for these.

Disadvantages - I like them a lot and I have warmed up to the politics disad. I prefer them to be intrinsic to the affirmative. I do like smart 2ARs that indicate why the neg’s disad is dumb because it presumes a,b,c and how there is no link, internal link, impact because x,y,z is true.

Counterplans - these debates depend on whether or not they are logical and/or fair. Process and Alternate actor counterplans are suspect, I do err neg on conditionality only because Affs aren’t convincing at winning that the neg’s CI is arbitrary and that conditionality is unfair. Please weigh the impacts of which standards are more important. Counterplans that are textually and functionally competitive are good. Uniqueness counterplans are very smart. Default is reject the argument not the team unless otherwise told.

Kritiks - Fine with these. I do believe affs should be able to leverage their entire 1AC as offense against the K. Framework doesn’t have to be just to access the aff - I can be convinced that these are round winners and I am persuaded by the Shively evidence. Competition scenarios are necessary. If you are neg, It is wise to extend case arguments that prove the aff can't solve their harms and tie that into how the affirmative's assumptions are thus flawed and make inacurate predictions about the world and thus only the alt of changing our views of the world can solve. Impact turning Ks is absolutely fine with me

Topicality is a voting issue. Explain to me a vision of debate that would be better to have thought your interpretation of the resolution. A good overview of T, explanations of why the Aff doesn’t meet and why their interpretation is bad, explanations of what kind of cases the aff’s interpretation justifies and the type of arguments you lose and why those arguments are necessary for the topic go along way in convincing me.

Reasonability doesn’t make sense to me usually although it is smart if you can’t generate offense. I do think offensive reasons for why reasonability is good are infinitely regressive and circular (you can’t prove why you are reasonably reasonable). Though I default competing interpretations, it is not, however, an uphill battle. Defend why reasonability is good, why the aff/neg’s interpretations are predictable or not /arbitrary or not.

Specification arguments are not convincing because these arguments usually lack the components required to make it a good argument (a definition, reasons why it is the Affirmative’s burden to specify). It is the negative’s burden to prove that the resolution calls for the aff to specify within the resolution. Cross-ex checks is a particularly good argument.

My theory threshold extends far behind "oh snap you dropped it" and definitely passed the blippy fast debates. If you are going to go for theory, make it about the vision of debate, filtering your arguments through an offense/defense paradigm.

Counterplans should be both textually and functionally competitive. The 1AC and the Plan Text should always be the aff's best offense. 1AC "stealing" arguments are particularly responsive to me.

Conditionality – I am actually fine with this. To win that it is good, you probably have to win that it is logical. Its logical for a counterplan to be conditional as the status quo should be an option. It is not logical for someone to place benchmarks for kicking, those goalposts are always arbitrary and self-serving. This is probably why counter-interpretations on the theory debate are so dumb: If you are aff, just win that any situation that is better than the current one is preferable. If you are neg, just defend why conditionality is necessary. If you are advocating a conditional counterplan in the 2NR minus a competition scenario for the status quo, I will find it very hard to kick the counterplan for you. I agree with Waldinger - there is indeed a semantic difference between these statements: "The status quo is always an option" and "conditional"

Very abusive counterplans can be voting issues separate from the conditional nature of the counterplan. That is to say theoretical objections to the type of counterplan (Agent, Process, Consult, Conditions, etc.) can be deployed in and of themselves without having to first isolate the the nature of the counterplan (conditional, etc.). However in doing so, I believe you lose a lot of potential offense. It seems that in my mind that logic would dictate that, if the counterplan was indeed a test of the plan, that the conditions on when it could be kicked or when the status quo would be the better option would be determined upon certain mechanics of the counterplan failing. If this were the case, there would be no logical reason for the status of the counterplan to dictate the functionality of the counterplan.

At the end of the debate, I will vote for who did the better debating. I will always default to position myself as a critic of United States Federal Government action and whether or not the affirmative's plan should be passed. You may explicitly change this if you provide me with a way to evaluate the debate. Think about it this way: I am an educator passing out a rubric with benchmarks for evaluation. You don’t like this so you make your own. I will consider changing my “rubric” if you provide me with the benchmarks to do so.

I am also sympathetic to the argument that the affirmative should at least be able to use 1ac impacts against your kritik within most frameworks.

Topical versions of team's affirmatives are great tools. Also, if your response to this is "Well, there is no T version of my affirmative out there", you probably need to articulate why the alternative to channeling your argument through an instrumental reading of the resolution is insufficient.

Fine with them: I find Rasch and Nietzche particularly interesting. For me the framing of your kritik is especially important, as important if not more than the question of alternative solvency claims. Never assume that I know the nuances of your kritik. Usage of “big, philosophical, amorphous” words is not a substitute for debate. I actually find them to be the number one impediment to flowing. If you control the frame of the debate, your chances of winning is much higher.

I do think that there is always a risk of the disad however that being said, there is a risk of the aff’s impacts as well. Careful impact assessment and impact filters are necessary for me.

Experience: I debated for three years in high school at Baltimore City College and now I'm one of their coaches. This is my fifth year judging HS debate.
Paradigm: Just a general overview of how I judge debates: I'm fine with spreading as long as you are clear enough. I will listen to almost anything and as long as it's argued well. A dropped argument is a true argument (within reason). I like competitive spirit but don't be a terrible person. By that I mean you can get fiery in your speeches and cross-ex but personal attacks are not cool unless they are really out of line (i.e. they said something outright offensive: racist, sexist, patriarchal, heteronormative,etc.). I want to see a good debate so run what you're comfortable with and know what you're talking about please.
Specifics: Now I'll talk about a few things that are more specific to argumentative style and my own preferences.
DISCLAIMER: Everything beyond this point is my point of view so you should take it with a grain of salt. I'll always judge a debate based on what happens in the round not based on how I feel about the arguments ran. However I will tell you how I felt after the round.
K: I primarily debated kritically during my debating career so that is naturally what I prefer to hear and I know more about. If you run a K, you can trust that I'll probably have a good idea of what you're talking about unless you are running something really obscure.
I read a lot of Deleuze and Foucault myself so I have a higher threshold for these arguments. I really hate generic answers to these arguments...but they can win the debate if they aren't answered well.
Race, so this is an interesting subject. I have read some of the literature behind most classic race arguments and my team has read(or is currently reading) most of the better kritical race theory arguments so I am used to hearing them and I understand them very well. Thus likewise, I expect them to be run well or you are already starting off from behind in my book. If you are an all white partnership, be careful what you say. I'm not going to vote you down for being wrong but being offensive can affect speaker points. So I will listen, just don't say anything that will make me regret that.
Policy: I wouldn't say that straight up policy is something that I love listening to but I will listen to it. Keep it clean. Keep it understandable. Otherwise I have no issues.
T: I really dislike this argument in 99% of situations. If the other team answers it reasonably I will not vote on it. Read something responsive. T is not responsive. If you plan on winning T it better be the whole 2NR or else I'll give the 2AR a lot of leeway on it unless the 1AR just straight dropped it, but you still need an impact. T alone is not a voter. Also if you go for T, especially against a K Aff there damn sure better be some real impacts. I mean real world impacts. Weighing your "education" against systemic issues is not going to be an easy debate to win in front of me.
Theory: I have nothing for or against theory. Be articulate and make sure I understand all the parts of your argument and why what they're doing is bad.
At the end of the day when I'm judging I really just want to see a good debate so if you give me that you can be sure that I will judge it fairly and unbiased.

Default
Debate should be centered on the hypothetical world where the United States federal government takes action. I default to a utilitarian calculus and view arguments in an offense/defense paradigm.
Topicality
Most topicality debates come down to limits. This means it would be in your best interest to explain the world of your interpretation—what AFFs are topical, what negative arguments are available, etc—and compare this with your opponent’s interpretation. Topicality debates become very messy very fast, which means it is extremely important to provide a clear reasoning for why I should vote for you at the top of the 2NR/2AR.
Counterplans
Conditionality is good. I default to rejecting the argument and not the team, unless told otherwise. Counterplans that result in plan action are questionably competitive. In a world where the 2NR goes for the counterplan, I will not evaluate the status quo unless told to by the negative. The norm is for theory debates to be shallow, which means you should slow down and provide specific examples of abuse if you want to make this a viable option in the rebuttals. The trend towards multi-plank counterplans has hurt clarity of what CPs do to solve the AFF. I think clarity in the 1NC on the counterplan text and a portion of the negative block on the utility of each plank would resolve this. I am also convinced the AFF should be allowed to answer some planks in the 1AR if the 1NC is unintelligible on the text.
Disadvantages
I am willing to vote on a zero percent risk of a link. Vice versa, I am also willing to vote negative on presumption on case if you cannot defend your affirmative leads to more change than the status quo. Issue specific uniqueness is more important than a laundry list of thumpers. Rebuttals should include impact comparison, which decreases the amount of intervention that I need to do at the end of the debate.
Criticisms
I am not familiar with the literature, or terminology, for most criticisms. If reading a criticism is your main offensive argument on the negative, this means you’ll need to explain more clearly how your particular criticism implicates the affirmative’s impacts. For impact framing, this means explaining how the impacts of the criticism (whether it entails a VTL claim, epistemology, etc.) outweigh or come before the affirmative. The best debaters are able to draw links from affirmative evidence and use empirical examples to show how the affirmative is flawed. Role of the ballot/judge arguments are self-serving and unpersuasive.
Performance
In my eight years as a debater, I ran a policy affirmative and primarily went for framework against performance AFFs. The flow during performance debates usually gets destroyed at some point during the 2AC/block. Debaters should take the time to provide organizational cues [impact debate here, fairness debate here, accessibility debate here, etc.] in order to make your argument more persuasive. My lack of experience and knowledge with/on the literature base is important. I will not often place arguments for you across multiple flows, and have often not treated an argument as a global framing argument [unless explicitly told]. Impact framing and clear analysis help alleviate this barrier. At the end of the debate, I should know how the affirmative's advocacy operates, the impact I am voting for, and how that impact operates against the NEG.
Flowing
I am not the fastest flow and rely heavily on short hand in order to catch up. I am better on debates I am more familiar with because my short hand is better. Either way, debaters should provide organizational cues (i.e. group the link debate, I’ll explain that here). Cues like that give me flow time to better understand the debate and understand your arguments in relation to the rest of the debate.
Notes
Prep time continues until the jump drive is out of the computer / the email has been sent to the email chain. This won't affect speaker points, however, it does prolong the round and eliminate time that I have to evaluate the round.
I am not a fan of insert our re-highlighting of the evidence. Either make the point in a CX and bring it up in a rebuttal or actually read the new re-highlighting to make your argument.
The debaters that get the best speaker points in front of me are the ones that write my ballot for me in the 2NR/2AR and shape in their speeches how I should evaluate arguments and evidence.
Depth > Breadth

Affiliation: I’m in law school now, don’t really participate in debate things that often anymore. I spent a year coaching George Mason University's teams (2015-2016 season) and debated four years at the University of Mary Washington (’15) and in high school.
General: Debate is about getting an education through research, argumentation and communication BUT it's also important that you have fun, so get to know people in the debate community because they are some of the best people and friends you will ever meet. I think the debate community is one of the best things I got out of my college career because, besides the people you meet, you also get critical thinking abilities and advocacy skills. Given that, you should debate how you want to debate whether or not it's how you think I want you to debate.
I believe in quality of evidence over quantity, but I’m not going to do a qualifications debate for you.
Speaker Points: I will follow whatever point guidelines the tournament provides, but here are my thoughts on speaking in debate. I think debate is about communication and debaters should consistently try to improve. There seems to be a lot of cursing in debate rounds – if I can go my whole debate career without swearing in debate, I think you can make it through a debate with me.
Do not clip cards. If you think someone is clipping cards you should have evidence with a video/sound recording or it will be almost impossible to adjudicate. If you make such an accusation, we will stop the debate and it will become an ethics challenge.
Paperless: Prep time will stop when you finish prepping the doc. I will call people out on stealing prep time while jump drives/emails are being sent. If you are not going to finish a card, say marked at [last word]. Saying this….set up your stand, get your paper, pens, timer, mouse out BEFORE the debate starts, not two minutes after the tournament designated start time. I like to start debates on time.
Flow: I will flow everything in the debate, including CX, unless both teams instruct me to not flow. Because a debate is a communication activity I will determine my decision based off what I have flowed. I flow and debated line-by line, which means directly referencing the other teams arguments and then answering them there, not three minutes later in the speech. I think long overviews are a waste of time. It will probably suit you better to make the arguments in response to the other team – it allows for a more in-depth debate. Slow down for theory/T/framework/analytic heavy debates. This way we can all be sure it gets on my flow.
ARGUMENTS:
Topicality: These debates become very messy very fast. Try to prevent that from happening. I lean toward competing interpretations because there is rarely an explanation as to what reasonability means in terms of a topicality debate or for the topic as a whole. I also think that the literature on the topic is important. Saying caselist proves predictability is not a good argument when the question is whether or not you are predictable in regards to the resolution. If topicality is your strategy, make sure you impact it throughout the debate.
Disads: I will vote on a zero risk of a link. Additionally, I will vote negative on presumption on case if you cannot defend your affirmative leads to more change than the status quo. Issue specific uniqueness is more important than a long list of thumpers. Rebuttals should include impact comparison.
Counterplans: CP's are good. They are even better when they are case specific CP’s. Make sure that your counterplan text is clear and understandable, especially if there may be a question of competitiveness on the CP. Solving better is usually not a net-benefit. Competiviteness: There are two questions that I think are important to answer- does the CP rigorously test the aff AND how critical is the CP in the literature? I tend to think that if the CP results in the aff with no net benefit, then there really isn’t a reason to vote neg. I can be persuaded otherwise because the CP would functionally moot the whole 1AC. The status quo is usually an option at the end of a 2NR unless the aff says the judge kicking it is a bad idea with reasons why.
Kritiks: I don't don't come from a critical debate background. Kritiks are oftentimes not explained sufficiently and make it difficult to vote neg. The block on the K should expect the generic 2AC arguments that will be made and answer them with specifics to the affirmative and kritik. Saying “this isn’t us/this isn’t our x author” is not an argument. Permutations are usually a test of competition.
I think that topic/plan specific kritiks allow for better in round education and test the aff in an effective manner, but these are rarely read in debates. The team that usually wins the role of the ballot is most likely to win the debate because one of the sides usually won’t meet the ROB. Affs are better off making arguments as to why the alt fails in discussing the impacts they claim.
Theory debates: Cheapshot theory arguments are rarely a winner, but if it was dropped by the other team, a dropped argument is a dropped argument. I usually default to reject the argument not the team outside of a conditionality debate. I tend to lean negative on theoretical arguments, but I think I have a soft spot for conditionality.
Conditionality: I think that conditionality is good to an extent (don't read four conditional worlds that all contradict, or something like that). Once contradictions get involved there is more of an abuse story for the aff to make. One CP and one K are probably okay if they follow this logic. I think that conditionality can be an argument if you make it specific to the debate that you are having in the round. If you are going to go for conditionality explain what precedent it would be setting, what abuse the team did, what arguments couldn’t you make…etc.
Performance: I am willing to listen to performance and advocacies, but I strongly believe that one of the biggest values in debate comes from discussing the implementation and implication of topical advocacies. Saying that, I am more persuaded by teams that are willing to engage the topic with a non-tradtional affirmative rather than those that are not. A good performance team will discuss the necessity of the alternative modes of engagement (aka why couldn’t you read a topical 1AC)
Framework: I think this is probably the argument that teams should go for against performance affs. The topic has value as it sets a stasis for argumentation from which rigorous testing commences-I think the topic is made to be affirmed if you flip aff and negated if you flip neg. Topical version of the aff arguments are important. For the aff (saying debate bad), I think uniqueness arguments about exclusion are very persuasive but I need to understand why the aff is a step in the right direction.
