Lincoln Douglas Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideI'm fine with speed and theory. If you choose to speed spread, I would like to be included on the email chain so that I can follow along ( Kendrickralan@gmail.com ). I am inexperienced in judging K arguments.
Please weigh your significance against your opponent's.
Pronouns: she/her ♀️
Email: nalan0815@gmail.com,
Please also include: damiendebate47@gmail.com
I debated policy debate for 3 years in high school 2008-2011 and have judged for 10+ years now.
I REALLY like to see impact calculus - "Even if..." statements are excellent! Remember: magitude⚠️, timeframe⏳️, probability ⚖️. I only ever give high speaker points to those that remember to do this. This should also help you remember to extend your impacts, and compare them with your opponent's as reasons for a judge to prefer your side.
- However, I don't like when both sides keep extending arguments/cards that say opposite things without also giving reasons to prefer one over the other. Tell me how the arguments interact, how they're talking about something different, etc.
- Be sure to extend arguments (especially your T voters) even if they're uncontested - because that gives me material for the reason for decision. If it's going to be in your last speech, it better be in the speech before it (tech > truth here). Otherwise, I give weight to the debater that points it out and runs theory to block it from coming up again or applying.
------------------------- Miscellaneous ----------------------------
Prep and CX: I do not count emailing /flashdriving as prep time unless it takes ~2+ minutes. Tag-team cross-ex is ok as long as both teams agree to it and you're not talking over your partner. Please keep track of your speech and prep time.
Full disclosure: Beyond the basic K's like Cap, Security, Biopow, Fem, etc., I'm not familiar with unique K's, and especially where FrameWork tends to be a mess, you might need a little more explanation on K solvency for me or I might get lost.
I often read along to the 1AC and 1NC to catch card-clipping, even checking the marked copies.
Heights High School 2020 - UT Austin 2024
TLDR (Longhorn Classic updated):
I've been more focused on law school apps this semester and as a result, have not done much debate so far this year. I will listen to some rounds online to get my hearing back up to speed but if I end up having to call slow a lot don't worry about it being an issue that affects your speaks.
I will vote on *almost* anything and you should not be scared to read any arg / change your strat in front of me. I promise I will work hard on your decision but my knowledge in some areas is lacking (phil&tricks). That being said here is a list of affs and 2nr collapses sorted by my happiness when evaluating them.
Please give me these debates: Larp, Any t/theory, t-fw, innovative K affs
I am happy in these rounds: K 2nrs (vs policy, phil, and K affs)
I will be fine: generic/overdone non t - K affs, substantive Phil Affs, NCs phil strats,
Sadness: nailbomb affs, tricks, lay (I just don't understand it)
*I am dogmatic about these and will actually not evaluate*: speaks theory, eval the debate after [speech]

General Info
Hi, I debated at Heights High School for 2 years in CX and 1 in LD. In my senior year I focused on nat circuit ld where I broke at a few tournaments but never bid. I did qual for other tournaments such as TFA, NSDA, and UDL Nationals in CX later that year if that influences your opinion of me. I am now an on and off coach at Heights for both CX and LD.
Debate in general
I’m as tab as possible and my route to the ballot will attempt to start from the highest to the bottom layer via the path that requires me to intervene as a judge the least. If I think a certain flow is irresolvable I'll look to the next layer/flow and if there's nothing left I'll vote on presumption. I try to not let my preferences affect my decision, but predispositions exist so true tab is impossible imo.
Tech>Truth
- Concession = true/100% strength of link (presuming it's a warranted argument- conceded claims are still just claims)
- Telling me people got wrecked on the flow > persuasive bs 2ar pandering to my sense of ethics
Good evidence and spin > good spin bad evidence > bad spin good evidence
Default comparative worlds.
I default to presuming aff in LD. In CX/Policy I give presumption to the team who deviates from the squo the least.
I flow CX. I default to CX is binding but that is debatable. This means links and violations are obtainable from CX. If you want to make extra sure I do type down the specific CX interaction that you want to cite in your speech it never hurts to throw me some quick judge instruction: "judge write that one down" or "make sure you got that" is plenty.
Yes send me the doc but no backflowing – I’ll only use it for evidence comparison (if I absolutely have to b/c you should be doing that for me) and clipping violations. There are two instances where I will intervene and engage in my own evidence comparison, 1) when either I truly believe the flows from the 2nr and 2ar are truly insufficient to resolve the debate 2) when I am specifically given instructions to read the card myself by a debater. If I am forced to go down this route you automatically accept the extra risk of me finding out that your full text is not consistent with the argument you are attempting to make which can work against you so beware. In my rfd I will try to be clear where I had to intervene and any complaints of that intervention are your own fault whether that be your poor debating and lack of clash that forced me to do so or your overconfidence in your evidence that was misplaced. To be clear, my use of the term judge intervention here refers to me deciding between two pieces of important evidence by my own interpretation of what they mean, not me magically making new arguments to vote off of. Evidence ethics challenges are a stop the round level offense and I’ll determine it based off of full text on my own so be weary of that and be right.
I’ll say clear and slow as many times as possible but when I do that means I missed something and whatever isn’t on my flow in some fashion didn’t happen. For online tournaments: record your speeches in case of wifi issues.
I’ll disclose my rfd when permitted but not speaks. Postround me all you want, it will not change my decision but it can help you determine if your strategy was actually viable or not. I think a judge voting incorrectly and subsequently giving debaters negative reinforcement for what is actually a good strategy is a shame. I will work with you the best I can to avoid such an issue from occurring by both attempting to write the best ballot personally possible and being open to admitting that I was wrong.
LARP/Policy Stuff
I’ve done this form for most of my debate career – if you want to go hardcore policy then I’m down and am good for basically everything.
Strength and specificity of link determines size and probability of impact
Nuanced comparison and weighing of impacts are more likely to win my ballot than a card dump so like please just have clash
Any type of DA or CP is legitimate if you win it’s theoretically justified
Kick the CP or justify judgekick
Zero risk of a DA is possible
Politics DA are good and all but much of my decision will be determined by recency and evidence quality.
Riders DAs and stuff similar to that are a bit more sus but still an option.
Blanket claims about probability don’t make the DA go away but it does help you weigh the aff in combination with defense on the DA proper
Impact turns are good (see K section for a stipulation to that).
[Policy/CX Spec]: 2nc case dumps must have some connection to 1nc cards. EX: 1nc card justifying no US-China war with a list of general reasons permits 2nc card dumps that uniquely highlight those general reasons: econ interdependence, MAD, power balancing, etc. Conceding a scenario/link chain and then dumping new stuff in the 2nc is not allowed. The same goes for the affirmative: case add-ons are not new advantages, only more in-depth articulations of scenarios were already described in the 1ac. The same logic applies to DAs and CPs. Policy is good because its many speeches facilitate rigorous testing over arguments. Additional cards are meant to examine the nuances of arguments and particular warrants. If you can not win using the overarching ideas presented in the first constructive speeches you need to find better prep and make more strategic strats.
Theory
I default competing interps, no rvi, and drop the debater. If a competing interps justification is made and your opponent doesn’t have an explicit counter interp you win – I need to know what model of debate you’re defending.
I evaluate theory very tab and very technically so run whatever. If you think an argument is dumb then it should be easy to beat therefore I will vote on most interps. List of theories outside of that rule and I will not vote on/enact the implication of: give double 30s theory.
Reasonability is good and all but if they have a decently developed shell/offense you’ll probably need a brightline to justify me not voting against you. Another important thing to note is that reasonability is not an auto 100% defense on theory arguments. You still have to prove your violation really didn’t amount to much for me to feel comfortable using it as defense on a shell. To simplify that thought – you still how to prove how you are the good in the “good is good enough” justification.
Disclosure theory is fine – I was on a UDL program and still disclosed but seeing other teams in the league and teammates from my own school means I am sympathetic to and acknowledge certain responses. That means it’s fair game to run but up to you to prove to me why it should or shouldn’t be a norm.
[For y’all Nebel/Leslie/wtv debaters out there] I’m just going to be real with you – I’d much prefer a collapse to a pragmatics debate rather than semantics on t. I’ve read the nebel articles, I’ve collapsed to semantics before, but I feel like as a judge semantics will exponentially increase my chance of writing a bad ballot. I feel that if both sides are debated well, I probably have to intervene somewhere with my intuition/personal comprehension of articles/cards and there’s a high chance that I’ll misunderstand some really specific grammatical point that’s been extended so let’s just avoid going for it if there’s sufficient defense on it. That being said if you think you’ll crush them on the semantics debate either by concession or because your opponent heavily mishandled/misunderstood it then by all means extend it to your last speech but I would heavily advise against putting all your eggs in that basket.
[For Policy/CX]: I ran theory quite frequently in nat circuit LD and I am fond of it as a viable argument in policy as well. My style of evaluating the theory is incredibly flow-dependent and specifically for T, not actually concerned with what I personally think would be an amazing model of debate. T and theory shells that are warranted are arguments and will be equally evaluated no matter how silly or illogical they seem. If the interp is truly a ridiculous idea then it should be very easy to beat. T-subs and other generics are viable options to collapse to if you have the technical prowess to do so. This additionally applies to creative counter interps. Essentially: as long as you have a card for the T interp no matter how odd it is it will be a viable route to the ballot. I also evaluate T from the mindset of LD theory which is often at odds with some policy debaters' notions. In my mind, T is not just a definitions debate. If an interpretation just states a hypothetical rule and the shell has a definition (semantical warrant) as well as reasons as to why it should be the rule in the form of other standards (pragmatics warrants), only attacking the definition does not answer the T shell. Affs should articulate why their counter interp is both definitionally more accurate in addition to it being a better model model of debate. Arguments can be made that semantics matters more than pragmatics and vice versa but my default is they are equally justifications for an interpretation. My stipulation to this is that the wording of the interpretation matters. "Interpretation: substantially means a 25% increase or more" probably is just a definition debate.
Weigh between standards and voters please and winning that your offense controls the internal link to theirs will make your and my job very easy.
K stuff
Note to people who see Heights in my paradigm and switch to set col: Yes, as a result of Alice, I am now considerably well-read on set col. However, do not start reading it because you think it gives you a higher chance of winning in front of me. I know set col therefore I know when you're reading it wrong and have no idea what you're talking about. It's not a good look, trust me. Stick with what you're comfortable with and what is actually strategic.
I’ve read a lot of K lit but ask me before round about specific authors. Despite that, if you don’t sufficiently explain your thesis I won’t fill it in for you. Stuff I’ve done indepth reading of (also what I read in round): Baudrillard, Deleuze, Agamben, Foucault, and a ton of Marxist authors. I’m familiar with: Wilderson, Warren, Queerness, Ableism, Semiocap, Set col, Anthro, and Security. I’ve barely read it: Fem IR stuff, Heideggerian stuff, Psycho (beyond stuff used for pess).
I am likely to err aff on new 2ar args/creative reinterpretations of 1ar responses for these 1 card Ks that become 6 minute 2nrs given that the neg almost always also makes new arguments.
Less embedded clash = higher chance of winning
Read shorter overviews and do more work on the line by line please (unless it’s like some super nuanced pomo or other crazy arg in which case I’ll probably give you some leeway for the sake of me being able to evaluate the K to begin with).
Most frameworks are probably self-serving and arbitrary – try to read something that's not just impact justified. A FW is a model for how I evaluate the debate and one that randomly excludes all of the aff's offense without a good and nuanced warrant is probably not a good model.
Links drawn from lines of the 1ac or other associated speeches will almost certainly be rewarded with speaks and links of omission will almost certainly lose to a perm double bind argument
Explain your perms please if you just say the words perm “do the alt” or “perm do both” the neg probably just has to say links are DAs to the perm
Certain forms of death good might be fine but be very cautious of the way you present the implication of what that means and be considerate of your opponent and those who may be viewing the round. On the other hand, if you impact turn racism or other forms of similar violence you won’t like your speaks and it won’t end up on my flow and you’ll probably just lose the round if your opponent calls you out on it.
Non-t K affs and neg options
Go for it but please explain how to evaluate offense under your rob
K v K is fine – win your thesis/theory of power and win why that comes logically prior to their offense, controls the internal link to it, outweighs it, or mitigates it.
I am open to denying perms in a k vs k method debate
Smart counterinterps >>> spamming turns on fw
Fairness is an impact, but it can also be bad
Carded TVAs are good but not necessary
SSD and other ideological testing arguments are persuasive, but you need to win why that spillsover enough to outweigh the impacts of the aff or win sufficient defense on the 1ac that makes it an education v education debate
Performance and other K affs can lose to presumption absent sufficient articulation as to where and why our performances and actions matter
Tricks
I'm opening up to this style of debate slowly but I didn't debate it much so don't blame me if I don't correctly evaluate your 1 second apriori in the impact calc section. That also meanscut down on the jargon I am willing to vote on your trick but I won't if I have no clue what it means.
If you don't extend TT and you don't explicitly articulate how the trick functions in a world where I use comparative worlds I am very likely to note vote on the arg.
No evaluate the debate after x. I'll do it after the 2ar and count all speeches up to that point.
Phil
Default comparative worlds and presumption flows aff & permissibility flows neg
I only ever read Util and Kant in debate but I will try my best to evaluate any FW if you end up with me as your judge.
I have actually read a lot of phil in college so I am increasingly open to longer and tricks light frameworks. Just cut back on the jargon.
TJFs make my life easier as a judge but, like most arguments, are up to debate for their theoretical legitimacy so you do you.
Explanation of legitimate vs illegitimate offense is a must
Tell me what comes first
Policy Debate (the event)
Much of my paradigm is geared toward LD although all of it remains true for Policy. Control F [Policy/CX] to see the specifically outlined sections already written. That being said, my paradigm was not substantively written with Policy in mind so I will add some brief info that might clear things up.
- Run as many off as you want to however I must be able to draw a line from (at minimum) a warrant in the card of the 1nc to new cards in the block. If you want to introduce new random scenarios or explanations of how the world works maybe cut a more comprehensive 1nc card instead of shifting the debate mid-round. Obviously, that doesn't apply if the new cards are in reaction to 2ac args.
- My threshold for voting on theory is comparatively low to most other policy judges. I will vote on any theory or T shell if it is won on the flow. Reasonability is a paradigm issue that has to be won in order for me to use it. That means I am perfectly comfortable voting a t/theory shell even if I don't think the aff itself is that abusive if a debater wins competing interps > reasonability
- On T debates to all you affirmative debaters: I haven't judged the topic. I have no clue what the "core of the topic" is. This, in turn, means I also have no idea if your aff is the core of the topic. So actually explain why the wording of the resolution or topic literature means you're T instead of just asserting norms/the consensus of the community that I'm unaware of. Thanks.
- I am probably equally receptive to Policy args as I am K args in Policy/CX so just run whatever you are most comfortable with. Side note: If you run a bunch of theory just because it looks like I hack for theory and you fail to cleanly give your speeches on theory it will affect your speaker points.
Extra thoughts
Independent voters probably need to link back to some framework if you want me to try and weigh them especially if there’s a K or theory flow somewhere else.
Speaks
I don’t have random here’s plus or minus x speaks for doing a random thing – just debate your best and you’ll be given speaks accordingly.
If you’re at a local, I’ll probably inflate your speaks to hedge against parent judges using a 20-30 scale
If you're at a circuit tournament, I'll go by circuit norms/break averages depending on the event.

I'd really appreciate a card doc at the end of the round.
About me
Debated in policy for four years at Damien High School in La Verne, CA. I placed pretty well at some national tournaments and received some speaker awards along the way. I have worked as a judge and staff member at the Cal National Debate Institute. I was a consultant/judge for College Prep, and this is my first second as an assistant coach for College Prep.
I mostly think about debate like her. If you like the way she thinks then I probably think the same way.
2024-2025 Update
I do not have much topic knowledge going into the season so please be sure to explain IP specific legal mechanisms, acronyms, or statutes explicitly since I want to have a good grasp on what you are talking about.
Top Level
**** I will try my hardest to flow without looking at my computer so I suggest debating as if I have no reference to what is being read. Clarity is much more important than unchecked speed ****
Debate is a competition, but education seems to be the most intrinsic benefit to the round taking place. I believe that debates centered around the resolution are the best, but that can mean many different things. Debate is also a communicative activity so the first thing that should be prioritized by all the substance is the ability to clearly convey an argument instead of relying on the structure and tricky nature of policy debate.
The most important thing for me as a judge is seeing line-by-line debating instead of relying upon pre-written blocks. Drops happen and that is debate, but what I most hate to see are students reading off their laptops instead of making compelling indicts of their opponents' arguments off the top of their heads. Debate requires some reaction to unexpected things but I think that it enhances critical thinking and research skills.
When it comes to content, I sincerely do not have any big leans toward any type of argument. Just come to the round with a well-researched strategy and I will be happy to hear it. My only non-starters are arguments that promote interpersonal violence, prejudice toward any group of people, or danger toward anyone in the round. If those arguments are made, the offending team will lose, receive a 0 for speaker points, and I will speak with their coach. The safety of students is the number one priority in an academic space such as debate.
Thoughts on Specific Arguments Below:
Disadvantages: Impact calculus and Turns case/Turns the DA at the top, please. These debates are won and lost with who is doing the most comparison. Don't just extend arguments and expect me to just clean it up for you. I like politics DAs, but I want more comparisons of whose evidence is better and more predictive instead of just dumping cards without any framing arguments. Go for the straight turn. I love bold decisions that are backed up by good cards.
Counter plans: I am all about good counterplan strategies that have great solvency evidence and finesse. I have grown tired of all the nonsense process, agent, and consult counter plans, and while I will vote for them, I prefer to hear one that is well-researched and actually has a solvency advocate for the aff. Regarding theory, most violations are reasons to justify a permutation or to lower thresholds for solvency deficits, not voters. Consult CPs are however the most sketchy for me, and I can be convinced to vote against them given good debating.
Topicality: Love these debates, but sometimes people get bogged down by the minutiae of the flow that they forget to extend an impact. Treating T like a disad is the best way to describe how I like teams to go for it. Please give a case list and/or examples of ground loss. Comparison of interpretations is important. I think that the intent to exclude is more important than the intent to define, but this is only marginal.
Kritiks: Over time I have become more understanding of critical arguments and I enjoy these debates a lot. The alternative is the hardest thing to wrap my head around, but I have voted for undercovered alternatives many times. I think that the more specific link should always be extended over something generic. Extending links is not enough in high-level rounds, you have to impact out the link in the context of the aff and why each piece of link offense outweighs the risk of the aff internal link. I prefer that the negative answer the aff in these rounds, but I do not think it is impossible to win without case defense. The only thing that matters is winning the right framework offense.
Planless Affs: Performance 1ACs are great but there has to be an offensive reason for the performance. I won't vote on a dropped performance if there is no reason why it mattered in the first place. I prefer that these affs are in the direction of the topic, but if there is a reason why only being responsive to the resolution matters, then I am fine with it not being so. Framework is a good strategy, but I don't like voting on fairness, because I don't believe that it is a terminal impact. I believe that having a fair division of labor is important, but not because debate is a game. Debate has intrinsic educational value and both teams should be debating over how they access a better model of the activity. For the negative, I like it when teams just answer the aff method and clash over the effectiveness of the 1AC.
Conditionality: I think that up to 3 advocacies are fine for me. Anything more and I am more sympathetic to the aff. Don't get it twisted, if the neg screws up debating condo, I will vote aff.
Feel free to ask me anything before the round. Most importantly compete, respect each other, and have fun.
I am a debate coach whose decisions are incredibly flow based. I am a great judge for technical, mechanical line-by-line debate at any speed where I can crisply hear every syllable of every single word. Judge instructions are axiomatic.
I am a former varsity PF debater and Impromptu speaker. I also won the Big Questions Tournament 2022 (as my teammates requested I put in here). I use she/her pronouns. I don't really care about formality (clothes, shoes, setup, whatever, although don't be ridiculous for both our sakes). If you have tech issues, let me know and we can figure it out. Call me dude if you want to, I'll find it fun.
I won't dispute unless you tell me to, be nice, don't make me intervene. I'm fairly flow but I'm also literally a high schooler. Speed is fine, but please organize and signpost well. Have good evidence. Don't be rude. Tech over truth. Theory/K is fine, but needs to be explained thoroughly. Make puns.
I don't have all that much experience in anything other than PF but I have a pretty good gist of the other events.
No longer active in debate. Please refer to Raffi Piliero for all thoughts, comments, questions, and concerns.
I am a parent judge and have been judging since September 2019. I have primarily judged LD but in the last 2 years I have judged PF, Parli Policy and Congress too. I do flow and take copious notes. I am not comfortable with spreading, so please speak at moderate speed so that I can understand your arguments. Please make sure you are polite to your opponent. Please provide sufficient evidence to substantiate your contentions and be able to provide evidence when asked by your opponent. Do not introduce new evidence in your final speeches or lie that arguments were dropped when they weren't. It will definitely count against you as I do flow. Overall enjoy the debate and have fun!

Hi! I'm a fan of email chains so if you're making one, put me on it: lydiadimsu20@marlborough.org
Background:
I'm a former varsity debater at Marlborough School and debated national circuit LD for four years.
General basics:
**I'm not super familiar with this topic so if you're running niche plans, please explain them thoroughly.
__________________________________
1. Feel free to go at whatever speed you want to AS LONG AS you are slowing down for analytics, card tags, and author names. At the end of the day, clarity > speed, your incoherent mumbling means nothing to me and I won't flow what I don't hear. If you can go fast without sacrificing enunciation, great!
2. I'm cool with T/theory, Ks, DAs, CPs, PICs, etc. so long as you EXPLAIN it. I will not be happy if you just read a bunch of cards and call it a day. I don't care if you read the most amazing off-cases the world has ever seen, if I don't thoroughly understand them because you aren't doing enough work to persuade me, I will not vote on it. Weighing and impact-calc are key, use them to your advantage.
3. That being said, I'm not a fan of tricks, truth-testing, or high-level (or obscure) phil/Ks. Not only that, but I don't have much experience with these arguments. Read something else or, if you have a burning passion for such positions and are only able to run them, explain them to me really well (refer to point #2 for more info).
4. Please don't be that person who runs 7-off case with four of the off-cases being irrelevant theory shells. Debate should be educational and all you're doing is wasting time with dumb arguments. BUT, again, if it is explained well and I have to vote on it, I will put my feelings aside and do so.
Notes on prep time:
1. I'll allow flex prep if you need it.
2. I don't count flashing as prep but don't try to be sneaky and steal prep, I have my own timer and will notice. I'm not afraid to call you out if you're taking an obnoxious amount of time to send your docs.
FYI:
If it isn't already obvious from above, don't be mean! There's a thin line between trying to be perceptually dominant and being aggressive, don't cross it or your speaks will suffer immensely. Also, this goes without saying but, don't be racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, etc.
P.S. If you're a guy debating a girl AND/OR are the more experienced debater in round, you have the obligation to make the round more inclusive/safe (i.e. don't be rude or patronizing, it's as simple as that)!

If you have any questions feel free to ask me before the round starts.
TL;DR Go for what you're most prepared for and can execute the best because that's what really makes debate fun and productive. I'm not very familiar with the topic.
My Beliefs:
Debate is good
Tech > Truth
Clarity above all else
Clipping is bad
My leanings:
Util good
I, as the judge, am a policymaker
Fiat is a good thing
A couple Great cards + explanation always beats 10 pieces of mediocre ev
There's not an excuse to avoid line by line
Topicality
I don't think fairness isn't an intrinsic impact, same as education. It can be an internal link to other things but simply ending your impact calculus with "They KILLED FAIRNESS" won't do it for me. Just treat your extensions and impact work like you would any DA. (I WON'T EVALUATE T AS A DA. TOPICALITY IS A YES OR NO QUESTION. RISK ANALYSIS FOR T IS ABSURD). I also lean heavily towards competing interpretations; the quality of your ev does matter.
Kritiks
If your entire strategy solely centers around the K, I'm not a great judge for you. I can certainly understand your generic Cap and Security K but any high theory requires a whole lot of explanation for me. Just because I might understand what you're saying doesn't mean you can weasel your way around with generic links if it's even somewhat contested. If you're aff I'd down to see an impact turn (obvious exceptions, of course, are: racism good, sexism good, homophobia good, etc.) I really do not want to hear Death Good, please do not do that in front of me.
K-Affs (Includes Framework)
I have written my disdain for K-Affs before. I am not going to just dismiss it; even as I maintain a reluctance to vote on them, I am not one you should just breeze through your blocks and force me to do work for you. I will be the first to admit that I need a lot of explanation as noted above in "Kritiks". Given all this said, framework is an uphill battle for the aff. I am not very sympathetic to generic "fairness bad/your education bad" impact turns; I think policy education is generally a good thing.
Theory
The only theory I feel even remotely comfortable voting aff (TO REJECT THE ARGUMENT) on are utopian fiat bad, object fiat bad, riders DA bad, delay cps bad, and floating piks bad. Condo is generally a good thing and I personally think you're better off not reading that 30 second shell if the neg is running just a single conditional advocacy but I understand time skew. Also, in principle, I judge-kick. I think that as I default to Condo being a good thing, and the status quo always being a logical option, it would be illogical for me to choose a plan of action when doing nothing would be better.
Also, I doubt I'll ever vote for Word Piks. This certainly doesn't excuse excessively disrespectful behavior.
Disads
I like politics a lot and I like engagement and clash at the link level even more so. Turns case analysis (vice versa for the aff) is always a good thing and should be a must have. Straight turns are fun.
Impacts
I love impact turns and my personal favorites are: Heg Good, Warming Good, Cap Good, Dedev, and CWG. It will take a lot for me to evaluate 0 risk of an impact. It can happen but your cards need to be far better.
No longer judging at tournaments.

Hi! I'm Andrew, but people also call me gongo. I did LD at Harvard-Westlake, got 18 career bids, and reached finals of the TOC. I graduated in 2021.
Top level:
1. As a senior, I read only big-stick policy positions. This should tell you what types of debates I'm most comfortable judging, but it shouldn't dissuade you from reading your favorite args (exception: tricks).
2. Clarity is very important to me. No, I will not flow from the speech doc, so if I can't hear you, I'll stop flowing and yell clear until you slow down.
3. Online debate - keep a local recording in case you cut out. Keeping your camera on would be ideal, but it's not a requirement.
Non-T Affs:
I'm probably 60/40 biased in favor of T framework against non-T affs. Arguments like truth testing make intuitive sense to me.
I like education more than fairness, but both are fine.
I went for the cap K against non-T affs a lot as well. It's also a good option.
Ks:
I like these more than my argumentative history would imply. I think good K debates are a lot of fun to watch and judge. I've read a lot of Deleuze, a little bit of Baudrillard + settler colonial literature, and I have a good grasp of most other Ks.
Good 2NRs on the K will have specific links that implicate aff solvency, and contain lots of real-world examples on all parts of the flow. Good 2ARs on the K will either have lots of link defense and disads to the alt, or go for framework + extinction outweighs.
I really like impact turns against the K. Heg good and cap good are awesome, provided you go for them correctly.
Arguments couched entirely in terms of you or your opponent's personal identity/out-of-round actions are probably bad.
CP/DA:
I'm sympathetic to 1AR theory and very lenient in competition debates against cheesy process counterplans. However, 1AR theory debates are generally late breaking and annoying - I'll hold the line against 2AR explosions of 1AR blips, especially when there's not much in-round abuse (1 condo/1 pic).
I read ev, good ev is important.
T/theory:
I'm not the best at evaluating either of these arguments - as a debater, I rarely went for either except as last-ditch efforts. This isn't to say that I don't want to vote on them, but I do prefer substantive debates.
I'm definitely better for T than theory. Nebel T is probably wrong, but I'll vote on it (reluctantly) if you win it.
I'll default competing interps, but I'm very persuaded by in-round abuse claims and reasonability. This also means I don't like nonsense theory arguments (e.g. non-resolutional spec shells, shoes theory).
Don't go for an RVI unless you have literally no other choice lol
Philosophy:
Probably biased towards util. Permissibility and presumption triggers, including calculation/aggregation impossible, are ridiculous to me, but I'll vote on them if conceded.
If your opponent reads a nonsense contention, concede their framework and go for turns!
I went for the race/colorblindness K against phil a lot, and I like the argument.
Tricks:
I'll be very sad voting on conceded 1-line blips. The worse an argument is, the lower your bar for answering it. And if I don't understand your argument in the speech it was presented, I'll give your opponent leeway in terms of new answers in the final rebuttal speech.
Background (updated 9/29/23)
General - I graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2018 with majors in Biomedical Engineering and Applied Math/Stats and a minor in Africana Studies. I am currently a student at the Tuck School of Business and in a combined MD-MBA program with the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth (class of 2025)
Competitive - 5 years of circuit policy (2009-2014) at Centennial High School (as a part of Capitol Debate, yes they used to do policy mainly believe it or not) being coached by Daryl Burch. 2014 TOC Champion in policy. I debated 4 years of American parliamentary (APDA) and British parliamentary (BP) at Johns Hopkins University (2014-2018).
Coaching - I have not been in any coaching capacity since the start of the 2020-2021 school year (med school will do that to you). I've judged 1 tournament a year for the past 3 years (2020-2023) and have not worked at a summer camp since 2014.
Philosophy (updated 9/29/23)
If there is a chain I want to be on it - mkoo7000@gmail.com
I do NOT open speech docs until the debate ends, speaking clearly is key and if I can't understand you, I will just discount the arguments rather than opening the speech doc.
I have very little clue what the topic is, please assume I don't know common acronyms/terminology related to the topic.
In 90% of rounds, I submit my ballot within 3 minutes of the final speech ending. Here are the major implications:
- Clarity (in speaking, organization, and explanation) is my first priority. The main reason I've realized I submit my decisions quickly is not because the round is lopsided/underwhelming in quality, but because of the degree to which I value communication during the round. The team who communicated their story into my head while I am listening to their speech usually prevails over the team who may have had a warrant that I barely flowed while struggling to keep up with their communication. I will be actively deciding who is currently winning and exactly what I think the other team has to do to undermine that as the round goes on, thus leaving most questions answered in my head as the final speech ends. I concede that there is potential for error in my approach, but I figured that I would rather reward the more persuasive team rather than digging through and examining each and every technicality.
- My substantive preferences are very fluid. I have debated and judged almost every type of substantive arguments at the highest levels of high school competition so my real preference is to do what you think you do best. But as nobody is truly a blank slate, I have some explicit preferences and substantive decision-making quirks clarified below for both LD and policy.
- Cards are only read when their quality/warranting are explicitly contested. The corollary to this is that warranting explained during the speeches will always trump the existence of a card that may answer those warrants in my decision-making process.
- I put a heavier emphasis onto the final rebuttals in my decision-making process.
I am a STICKLER for timeliness during rounds
- Efficient and proactive conduct in evidence exchange and round preparation/conduct will be rewarded with speaker points.
- Flight 2 - I expect the first speech to be sent and ready to spoken, immediately after my RFD from flight 1 ends. I encourage/expect you to set up in the room as soon as the final speech ends (or even before in between speeches) and will not perceive the disturbance as rude.
- For LD especially - specifying which parts of speech docs your opponents did/didn't read requires prep time and is NOT a courtesy I am willing to allow during dead time. Please do not flow off the speech doc and flow the speech proper. However I will be sympathetic to clarifications after unclear speeches.
General Substantive Preferences (all formats)
- Impact comparison/explanation/tangibility is the first thing I sort through when making an RFD.
- Tech>truth - protection must be WARRANTED or probably won't be evaluated.
- If the best arguments are deployed on both sides, I lean neg (55-45) on whether a K aff gets a perm - the best arguments are usually nowhere close to being deployed.
- If you're going to go for the K, you better talk about the case and explain the implications for winning framework in the 2NR.
- I consider framework and the alternative to be 2 sides of the same coin. I think either can make up for a weakness in the other.
- Solvency advocates for CPs will make me neg leaning on theory/competition. If the solvency advocate is in the context of the aff, it will make it very hard to persuade me that the CP is theoretically illegitimate as I think the value of research/education incentivized by these kinds of CPs vastly outweigh any fairness concerns.
- For policy, very neg leaning on conditionality (up to 2), barely aff leaning on 50-state, international, and object fiat, really don't care about anything else.
LD specific preferences
- Please disclose immediately when requested if the pairing is out, EVEN if you are in flight 2. I think pre-round disclosure is educational and think the "30-minutes before the round" standard is arbitrary and silly. Getting me to vote on this is highly unlikely (more on this below) but I will happily reward/punish teams who point out this happened with speaker points (+0.2/-0.2 respectively).
- I am not a fan of theory/tricks/phil arguments. This is primarily due to the incomprehensible speed/clarity at which these arguments are usually deployed. I do not open the speech doc while flowing and will not refer to it to flow warrants I missed. I also find reasonability to be an extremely persuasive argument for most theory/tricks arguments (don't disclose cites, you wore shoes, etc). Arguments this does not apply to are theory arguments common in policy (conditionality bad, aff didn't disclose at ALL, 50-state fiat, PICs bad, international fiat, etc).
- I think the existence of a time skew biased in favor of the neg to be a persuasive argument in LD (take advantage of this in theory debates!!). Due to this, I find myself being more lenient to the 1AR/2AR in terms of tech (ie, not being super strict on dropped args, focusing more on the story than minute tech details). In high level debates, aff teams NEED to collapse in the 2AR to be able to win.
- Conditionality bad much more persuasive to me in LD comparatively to how I view it in policy. 2 or less in policy and 1 or less in LD are usually easily defensible to me.
Ethics/Procedural Challenges
- If you believe the other team is guilty of an ethics violation and I am notified, the debate will end there and I will determine if you are correct. If I notice an ethics violation, I will not stop the round but decide the round based on it after it ends if I believe it was sufficiently egregious. If there is an easy way for me to access speech docs, I will follow along at random moments during the debate.
- Card clipping/cross reading – Any form of misrepresenting the amount of evidence you have read is considered card clipping. It is your opponents’ burden to ask for a marked copy of your speech but it is yours to make sure that is ready IMMEDIATELY. This means if you forget to physically mark during a speech, you better have a crystal clear memory because you will lose if you mis-mark evidence. Audibly marking during a speech is acceptable as long as you explicitly say the words “mark it at ‘x’”. Intention does not matter. I understand if you were ignorant or didn’t mean to but you should have to take the loss to make sure you are MUCH MORE careful in future. Video or audio recordings are a necessity if you want to pose a challenge about card clipping. Anything that is 3 words or less (no more than twice a speech) I am willing to grant as a minor mistake and will drop the accusing team for being petty. Double highlighting is not card clipping, just make sure your opponents know which color you are reading, a simple clarification question can resolve this.
- Evidence fabrication – it is hard to prove this distinctively from evidence that cannot be accessed – if a team is caught fabricating (making it up) evidence they will lose.
Problematic not an ethics violation (these can be persuasive arguments to win my ballot)
- Evidence that cannot be accessed – this is necessary for teams to be able to successfully refute your research. If this is proved, I will ignore the evidence and treat arguments related to it as merely claims in my decisionmaking
- Out of context cards – this will seriously hurt your ethos and your opponents will probably definitively win their competing claim
- Misdisclosure – the only reason why this isn’t above is because there is almost no falsifiable method to prove that a disclosure wasn’t honest – this is probably the most serious of this category and can garner you major leeway in my decision making if you can successfully prove how it has impacted your ability to debate this round.
- If I catch you stealing prep (talking during dead time to your partner about the round, messing around on your computer, etc), I will dock half of your remaining prep time
Long ramble (this is the first draft of my judge policy I wrote when I was a young first year out that I just didn't want to delete because it's fun to keep. Only read this if you're bored or have too much time on your hands, a lot of it is probably outdated)
- The most influential aspect of determining how to pref a relatively new judge was seeing how they debated, talk to people who’ve judged/watched me (if they still remember)before to see what I rolled with in debates.
- I always enjoyed/found much more helpful the longer/thorough judge philosophies so be prepared to read a lot of my thoughts/rants that are coming
- Daryl Burch (coach) is the single biggest influential figure in my development as a debater. Srinidhi Muppalla (partner for 2 years) would probably come second. Go look at their philosophies.
- I was a 2A for 3 years and then a 2N for my senior year – I have read affirmatives all over the spectrum (complete performance, 10 impact policy affs, k affs that defended a plan) – and went for whatever on the neg (at one point my senior year, some team asked me past 2NR’s and I answered: T-economic engagement, give back the land K, black feminism K, asian counteradvocacy, warming good + geoenginnering CP, mexico politics DA, process CP, dedev, afropessimism K, warming good + politics DA, warming good + politics DA, framework)
Top Level Thoughts
- I see debate as an intellectual forum where individuals come to advocate for some course of action – the type of action desired is for the debaters to choose and discuss and for me to evaluate whether it’s a good or bad idea – note, this means you MUST defend SOMETHING (even if it’s nothing)
- Ethos is underrated – most judges know which why they will decide right after the round ends and spend the time after justifying and double checking his/her choice. Your persuasive appeal in every way you conduct yourself throughout the round is a massive factor in this. Know what you’re talking about, but more importantly, sound like you know what you’re talking about and show that you EXPECT to win.
- Speak clearly – if you can’t you should be doing a LOT of drills (trust me I was there too) – Judges who didn’t let me know they couldn’t understand me assuming that was my burden annoyed me to no end – I will be very explicit in letting you know if I can’t understand you – after the second time I call clear, I will not evaluate any cards/arguments I call clear on afterwards – I'll flow the next of your cards if I can understand them, this would be strategic as then the other team is responsible for answering them
- Speed = arguments I THINK the other team is responsible for answering – if it’s not on my flow then it’s not an argument so do your best to make sure it gets there
- I am awful at keeping a straight face while judging – use this to your advantage
- Set in stone – speech times, only one team will win – everything else is up for debate
- An argument is a claim and a warrant – dropped claims are NOT dropped arguments – dropped ARGUMENTS are true and you should avoid dropping ARGUMENTS – my understanding of rejoinder is that claims can sufficiently be answered by claims
- Conceding an opponent’s argument makes it the truest argument in the round – use this to your advantage
- I don’t protect the 2NR unless explicitly asked to – specific brightlines and warranted calls for protections (anytime) will be zealously adhered to
- Being aggressive = good. Being aggressive and wrong = bad. Being mean = worst. Debate should strive to be a safe space. There is a fine line between a politics of discomfort (which can be productive) and being violent toward another individual. This fine line is up to subjective determination by a “know it when I see it” test.
- I do believe that arguments about a debater’s actions/choices outside of the current round do have a place in some forms of debate. My biggest problem is that most of these arguments are non falsifiable and really impossible to prove. I think that it is important to be genuine but do know that debate is also a strategic game where strategy can conflict with genuine advocacy. Once again I’ll employ a subjective “know it when I see it test” and will update my thoughts on this issue as I judge more debates.
- I think all debaters should play an proactive role in doing their own prefs as soon as possible – it is quite the rewarding learning experience that helps you learn your judges
- Cards can undisputedly settle factual questions – analysis (including analysis about cards) settles everything else
- I will only call for a piece of evidence if there is an explicit cite referenced during the explanation of the argument – If I am asking questions like “Can you give me the piece of evidence you think says ‘x’,” then I am either doing annoyed or the debate is way too close for me not to double check.
- Debate's a technical game - do line by line and answer arguments - don't be surprised if I make decisions that seem debatable based upon technical concessions
- Assuming all positions are well prepared and executed close to as well as possible this would probably be my favorite to least favorite 2NR's - DA + case, DA + CP, advantage CP + DA, topic K, any strat with generic impact turns, any strat with politics, any strat with a process CP, generic K, topicality
- Cheap shots will only be voting issues if you give me no other option - what I mean about this is you better go HARD or go home, anything under 1 minute of explanation/warrants/asking for protection will probably be dismissed as a rule of thumb - cheap shots are not good arguments that were dropped, those don't apply to this section, but argument that are sufficiently stupid that they can only be won because they were dropped
- I'm super lenient on paperless rules - as long as you don't take forever and I don't catch you stealing prep you'll be fine - if your computer crashes mid speech just let me know
Framework
- I honestly feel like this section determines a lot about how people pref judges these days
- I will start off by saying that I am a firm believer in ideological reflexivity – people go a long way in trying to understand each other’s arguments and even embrace them instead of crying exclusion/trying to exclude.
- But yes, if you win the tech battle I will vote for framework
- Flipping neg greatly hurts your ability to go for ANY arguments based upon procedural fairness
- Real world examples from the debate community go a long way in proving points in these types of debates – use them to your advantage
- I think debate is most educational when it is about the topic – however I think there are multiple ways to defend the topic
- Arguments about procedural fairness are the most strategic/true in my opinion – however impacting them with just fairness is unpersuasive and you should couch your impacts upon the education (or lack of) from debates with little clash
- It is worth noting that I have stopped running procedural based framework arguments by the end of my senior year – however this was mainly due to the fact that I was very bad at going for framework and instead found much more strategic to engage affirmatives on the substance of their arguments (because I had a genius coach who was very good at thinking of ways to do that)
- If an aff defends a plan I will be EXTREMELY unpersuaded by framework arguments that say the aff can only garner advantages off the instrumental affirmation of the plan
Non-Traditional
- If you know me at all you should know that I am completely fine with these
- CX makes or breaks these debates – yes I do believe that you can garner links/DA’s off of things you say and the way you defend your advocacy even if your evidence says something else
- Always and forever I will prefer that you substantive engage your opponent’s advocacy, you’ll get higher points and the debate will be more educational, fun, and rewarding – however I do understand when there are cases you need to run framework and shiftiness in the way an advocacy is defended can be persuasive to me
- Watch out for contradictions – not only can it make a persuasive theory/substantive argument but I find it devastating when the aff team can concede portions of neg arguments they don’t link to and use it as offense for the other neg arguments
- The permutation is a tricky subject in these debates – I do believe that if the best arguments are made by both sides the negative will probably win that the aff team should not be able to garner a permutation – arguments couched upon opportunity cost and neg ground are the neg pushes I find most persuasive – however the aff arguments I always found persuasive are the substantive benefits that a strategy involving the permutation can accomplish
- Aff teams should have a clear non-arbitrary role of the ballot – these questions can go a long way in framing the debate for both sides
- Evidence can come in many forms whether it be music, personal narratives, poetry, academics, etc – all of it is equally as legit on face so you should not disregard it
- I need to be able to understand your argument – I always had a weakness for understanding high theory based arguments so if that is your mojo just know how to defend it clearly – most rounds you will know your argument the best so you’ll sound good and I’ll know it better than the other team so you should still be fine with running these and picking up my ballot
- Alternative styles of debate is not an excuse for actually debating, do line-by-line, have organized speeches, and answer arguments, I am very flow oriented when judging any type of debate, even if the general thesis of your argument may be superior and all-encompassing, YOU need to be the one to draw connections and explain why the other team's technicalities don't matter
Aff/Case Debate
- Add ons are HELLA underrate - PLEASE utilize them
- 2AC’s and 1AR’s get away with blippy arguments, punish them in the block for them
- K affs with a plan in my opinion were some of the most strategic and fun affs to utilize
- If the neg has an internal link takeout but didn’t answer the terminal impact, that does NOT mean you dropped an impact, logical internal link takeouts can single handidly undermine advantages even without evidence
- Make sure your advantages are reverse casual, many affirmatives fail at this and negative teams should expoit that
- Super specific internal links that get to weird places were always intriguing and show you are a good researcher, they make me happy
Kritik
- Contrary to popular belief, I only went for the K v. a traditional policy aff three times my senior year. I lost 1/3 of those rounds but never lost a round when the 2NR involved a CP/DA/impact turn. Take that how you will
- Explaining a tangible external impact (not only just turns case args, although those are also necessary) is key to winning on the neg, most teams don't do this
- As a debater I’ve always had trouble conceptualizing high theory criticisms, maybe I’m just illiterate but I will have trouble voting for something I can’t explain in my own words
- Don't drop the aff, 90% of K 2NR's that don't directly disprove the aff in some way will probably lose.
- Permutations are pretty strategic, phrase perms as link defense to some of the more totalizing k impacts and defend the speaking of the aff and you should be fine
- Framework and the alt are usually 2 sides of the same coin, please please impact what winning framework means
- I am most familiar with kritiks based in critical race theory, mainstream k’s (neolib, security, cap, etc.) I can also easily understand
- Death good is not a strategic (or true) K in my opinion at all, however there is a BIG difference between death good and fear of death bad
Topicality
- Probably more a fan of competing interpretations
- Reasonability is a reason why the aff could win without offense – It means that the aff is topical to the point that topicality debates should not be preferred over the substantive debate and education that could’ve been had by debating the aff
- Big fan of reject the argument not the team
- I think the T-it's debate on the topic this year is very interesting and could go both ways based on evidence/execution on both sides
- more persuaded by T-miiltary means structures not actions
- effects T is underrated on this topic - try and directly increase exploration/development not some regulation or be prepared to defend that regulation as exploration/development
Disadvantages
- I’m on team link determines the direction of uniqueness
- Politics theory arguments are meh in front of me, I personally never went for them, I just found substantive arguments more strategic
- Short contrived DA’s are strategic but ONLY because aff teams don’t call them out for their bad internal links and only read terminal impact defense to them – fix that and they should go away
- I always loved good impact turn debates, warming good, de-dev, anything
- Turns case arguments are awesome – use them to your advantage and don’t drop them
Counterplans/CP Theory
- Big fan of advantage CP’s – plank them all you want (but kicking planks is probably abusive because every permutation of the diff planks are now another conditional option)
- Solvency advocates go a long way in helping you with theory – I firmly believe that they are good for debate
- I’m an agnostic on the theory of CP’s that compete off of immediacy and certainty
- Agnostic about almost every theory question, more persuaded by the aff on 50 state fiat, international fiat, and object fiat
- Interpretations are good – you should always have one (even if its self serving)
- In my last 3 years of debate, I have NEVER been on a team that went for conditionality for 5 minutes in the 2AR, 2 or less conditional options will be an uphill battle for the aff
Speaker Points
Points are based on two things: content and style. Content is simple, the more your argumentation helps you win a ballot, the better your points. Content includes things like warrant explanation, strategic execution, and strategic vision. Style is as important if not moreso than content. These are all the intangible parts of your debating that garner my respect. This would include organization (very very very VERY important), presence, clarity in delivery, and respect for the activity and your opponents. I also have a horrible sense of humor, by that I mean anything that isn't violently offensive is ok under my book and I'll probably find it funny (this includes awful jokes and bad puns) - take advantage of that
I will shamelessly admit that I was that debater who obsessed over points because I liked to calculate things/wanted to know where in the bracket I was. Ask me afterwards and I’d probably tell you what I gave you
Random bonus like things that would boost your points –
- Successful and badass risks (impact turn an aff for 8 minutes, kicking the case, all-in’s on strategic blunders, etc)
- Making fun of my friends (It has to be funny)
- Make fun of Simon Park or Gabe (It doesn't have to be funny)
- Memes, pokemon references, mainstream anime references, etc
- Leftover speech/prep time (although if you deliver poorly that shows false arrogance which will hurt you more)
I'm a Master's student at UTHealth Houston. I did LD at Westwood from 2015-2019, then coached/judged actively from 2019-2022.
St Mark's 2024 Update: If you give a larger portion of your final rebuttal speeches (2NR/2AR) without your laptop, I'll give higher speaks (probably up to a full point but I'm going off vibes). This is in part because I think debaters are too used to giving entirely scripted speeches off a document that don't engage with arguments read in the round, but also because I simply don't catch enough arguments when debaters blitz through monologues at top speed. This obviously excludes reading of evidence and I understand many debaters flow on their laptops, but generally I'll boost speaks if I can tell more of the speech is given off the flow.

I've shortened this paradigm because it was very lengthy, but the full one from the 2021-2022 season can be found here.
Main things:
1] I am most comfortable judging policy-style debates and T/theory debates, though the worse the shell gets, the more unhappy I am. I am comfortable judging phil and kritik debates if they don't get too advanced for my brain (which also seems to happen when debaters over rely on buzzwords to explain their arguments). I am not comfortable judging tricks debates, and though I will still evaluate those debates, your speaks will likely take a hit and my threshold for answering those arguments is much lower than other arguments.
2] My views on debate have mostly been shaped by Rodrigo Paramo, Morgan Grosch, and Jugal Amodwala. What you choose to do with that information is up to you. I also agree with Rodrigo Paramo on evidence ethics and trigger warnings.
3]Your chance of getting a ballot significantly goes up ifyou write my ballot for me somewhere in your speech. Whether that means framing arguments at the top or slowing down on key things or making things simple at the end of your rebuttal is up to you.
4] My perspective on tricks is the more I believe the argument is used to avoid clash the less I like it and the less likely I'll vote on it. This seems to exclude a lot of arguments debaters tend to read now, including but not limited to "evaluate the debate after the 1AC," indexicals, tacit ballot conditional, and various other paradoxes/1AR restart strategies. This is in large part because I just don't understand these arguments, but also because of my belief these arguments are not beneficial or educational to the activity. If you're not sure whether an argument is too tricky to read in front of me, err on the side of caution, or just email me pre-round.
5] I believe in open-source disclosure. I think most disclosure arguments that go beyond this are bad (contact info, round reports, actual tournament name, etc.).
6] I give speaks based on how far I believe your performance would get you at the tournament I'm judging at (which also tends to mean I give generally lower speaks at octas bid tournaments compared to finals bid tournaments). Yes I will disclose speaks if requested.
7] I require much more explanation for arguments than you think I do. Many 2AR's that I've judged go for a 3-second argument in the 1AR that I did not catch/have an understanding for, and many 2NR's that I've judged blitz through overviews of the theory of power/philosophical position that I cannot keep up with. Either slow down or be clearer in explanations, especially in online debates. You will not be happy with my RFD if I don't catch something because you're blitzing too fast.
8] I am extremely visually expressive. You should almost always be able to tell if I like something/find something confusing.
9] I don't know anything about this topic. Err towards overexplaining and try not to use too many acronyms.
Hello Everyone, I am a parent judge and have judged LD. Put me on email chain: ravin123@gmail.com
1. Be nice, respectful to your opponent and judge. If you are rude or mean to your opponent I will lower your speaks.
2. My philosophy is quality over quantity. Instead of speaking too fast to cover vast content, prioritize your top points, present them very clearly and confidently. Also, I will not understand if you speak very fast thereby limiting my ability to score you well.
3. In your document, do not use below font size 10 and anything below is difficult to read. Provide definition/expansion of acronyms used in the beginning of the document.
4. Once the debate is started, I expect the opponents to line up their thoughts to counter one over the other instead of making arguments that have no relevance and not connecting.
5. I expect professional behavior and attention like No phone messaging/checking while your opponent is talking.
6. I enjoy creative, analytical arguments backed by evidences. Prioritize your evidences vs listing lots of evidences. I will cross check the evidences made hence make sure that the sources listed are valid.
7. I expect a positive and constructive debate such that after the debate is over, opponents would have learned from each other or understood their areas of improvements.
8. I encourage not to stress out instead be yourself, give your best shot, compete, enjoy !
PF:
tech>truth, but that doesn't mean you can circumvent basic logic with one sketchy piece of evidence
DO: signpost, weigh, respond to turns/significant defense in 2nd rebuttal, extensions (!), crystallize the round in summary (because everything in final focus should be in summary), warrant everything
DON'T: be rude, bring up new points in final focus (unless your opponent brings up something entirely new in second summary), bring up something new in 2nd summary, deeply miscut or misrepresent evidence (I won't call for ev though unless someone explicitly tells me to, or I feel like I need it to resolve the round)
* I don't flow cross, but I'll still be listening. If something was important in cross, make sure to repeat it in a speech so it does end up on my flow, and use that time to try to get concessions out of your opponents.
** This is my 3rd year as a varsity debater, BUT I am not competing on this topic so make sure you are still explaining arguments thoroughly. That being said, if the round boils down to two nuclear war/winter/extinction scenarios, the best way to win my ballot is to explicitly tell me why your scenario is a) more probable/better warranted b) going to happen first or c) you link in/pre-req
LD/Policy:
I've judged LD a few times (but never competed), and I feel pretty comfortable with framework debate. A lot of the PF "DOs" apply to LD and Policy as well as far as what I want to see in speeches. However, I am not super familiar with Theory and Kritiks; you can read them, but make sure you are being very clear and helping me follow along. Also, I can't flow spreading so either don't do it or send me a speech doc.
policy: clear plan text (funding, timeframe, etc). Aff must have solvency to win. Neg counterplans must be competitive.

Not super familiar with expectations in Parli, but avoid just completely making up evidence for the sake of your arguments. Also be respectful with POIs (that's what they're called right?): be concise and if you're speaking don't always dismiss them. Like other events, entirely new arguments at the very end of the round won't be evaluated, and make sure you signpost, defend, and extend your arguments.
Congress:
just do you and try to ask thoughtful questions
Additional Things:
Feel free to ask me any questions before round if I missed something, the paradigm was unclear, or you don't understand one of the terms I used! At the end of the day, I want you all to have fun and get something out of the round.
^Because of this DO NOT make the round unsafe for anyone in it (that means avoid the -isms and the -phobias) and also please read trigger warnings (if you are worried something might need a trigger warning just ask and I can help you properly make it)!

EXPERIENCE
B.A., Political Science at UC Irvine and upcoming law school student. I competed in LD all 4 years of high school and also coach/judge debate, so that should tell you enough about my experience. I prefer traditional rounds, but circuit is fine too as long as I'm in the email chain.
Congress, PF, Parli, Policy: I've judged a few rounds, so I'm familiar with how these events work.
ARGUMENTS
I like to see well-constructed, logical arguments and rebuttals throughout the round, meaning that your claims should definitely have credible warrants and impacts. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT bring up new arguments in the 2NR/2AR. I hate that. I'm fine with Ks, CPs, Ts, etc. I personally don't like running them, but if you want to, go ahead. Make sure your links are clear and understandable.
My rule of thumb is if I don't know what you're talking about (substance and speaking wise), then it's not going in my flow. Speak clearly and know what you're talking about!
CX
I like debaters that can actually answer questions they're asked vs. beating around the bush. It's pretty obvious if you're just reading off your material vs. having a well-rounded understanding of the topic. I like to see debaters that can explain their content to their opponents vs. being snappy/rude/witty during CX.
VIOLATIONS/SPREADING
Bringing up new arguments in your last speeches will not be considered, like I said before.
DON'T SPREAD. I'm good with fast-paced talking, but remember to speak clearly and at a comprehendible pace because if it's not in my flow, then I'm gonna let it go. I'll do a hand-signal of some sort ONCE if I can't hear you, but if you fail to improve your speech after that, I will stop flowing your arguments and give you low speaks. Debate should be an activity where competitors can actually understand each other!
SPEAKS
As long as I can hear you clearly, you will get normal speaks.
If you speak exceptionally well, you might get a perfect 30 (but don't count on it)
If you don't improve your speech after I signal ONCE, you will get low speaks.
If you are being rude, aggressive, or making your opponent uncomfortable, you WILL get the lowest speaks possible and I WILL report you to tab.
----
Lastly, quality beats quantity. Always remember that.
Good luck!
I am an LD debater from Strake Jesuit.
As a senior I got 3 bids to the TOC. I also cleared and made it to octos.

I want to objectively evaluate arguments to determine who wins the round. For this reason, I give you a list of round scenarios and give you my comfortability in evaluating them.
1 = best (as in fairest evaluation on BOTH sides)
K vs K = 1
LARP vs K = 1
Phil = 1
LARP = 2
K affs = 1
Friv theory = 2
I don't have a preference for how you debate or which arguments you choose to read. Be clear, both in delivery and argument function/interaction, weigh and develop a ballot story.
Theory: I default to competing interps, no rvi's and drop the debater on shells read against advocacies/entire positions and drop the argument against all other types. I'm ok with using theory as a strategic tool but the sillier the shell the lower the threshold I have for responsiveness. Please weigh and slow down for interps and short analytic arguments.
Non-T affs: These are fine just have a clear ballot story.
Delivery: You can go as fast as you want but be clear and slow down for advocacy texts, interps, taglines and author names. Don't blitz through 1 sentence analytics and expect me to get everything down. I will say "clear" and "slow".
Speaks: Speaks are a reflection of your strategy, argument quality, efficiency, how well you use cx, and clarity (clarity being the least important).
Prep: 1. I prefer that you don't use cx as prep time. 2. It is ok to ask questions during cx. 3. Compiling a document counts as prep time. 4. Please write down how much time you have left.
Things not to do: 1. Don't make arguments that are racist/offensive (this is a good general life rule too). 2. I won't vote on arguments I don't understand or arguments that are blatantly false. 3. Don't be mean to less experienced debaters. 4. Don't steal prep. 5. Don't manipulate evidence or clip.
Hello, I am a parent judge :-)
1. Please talk a bit slowly
2. if you are using acronyms - please explain what they stand for.
Please put me on the chain -- hailey.danielle98@gmail.com
I did policy debate at Washburn Rural High School (2013-17) and the University of Southern California (2017-21). I was always a 2N. I previously coached LD at the Marlborough School in Los Angeles (2018-21). I am currently a PhD student at Yale (infectious disease ecology/pandemic preparedness). I judge for UDLs and some national circuit tournaments in Nashville/Atlanta/Kansas when convenient (but not consistently).
Update for 2024:
I am no longer actively involved in debate. If I'm judging you, please assume it is the first debate I've judged on the topic. I’ll pick up on the basics of the topic pretty quickly, but in-depth T debates and super-niche CPs might be challenging. If this is your thing, go for it, but add context and explanation. Avoid acronyms.
Basics
Your burden is to make it make sense -- I am pretty neutral on whatever "it" is. Choose a strategy (early) and write the ballot for me. The earlier you do it, the better.
Don’t take any of this paradigm to be hard and fast rules! These are just my general thoughts and reflections on how I feel about debate.
Please go like 70% of your fastest speed if you're reading blocks in rebuttals. If you want it to show up in my decision, I need to be able to type it.
I'm more tech>truth in policy, but that may differ in other activities depending on the context (and framing of the debate). That said -- not a fan of arguments that only win if dropped. Don't just throw things at the wall to see what sticks. Thoughtful strategy and creative argumentation are the way to good speaker points.
Cards dumps as a substitution for deeper analysis is bad. Use evidence for warrants, not claims. If your highlighting is just a repeat of the tag, you might as well not have read the card. I'm a PhD student – I'm going to read your cards, but I want YOU to have interpreted them and I want them to be good :)
I will not vote for moral blackmail -- this applies to “vote for me or else I have to quit” and similar. If you have a concern like this, talk to your opponent/coaches/me outside of the round, but please do not make my ballot the arbiter of that decision (!!!)

Pet Peeves:
- Reading your blocks monotone at 100% speed :( and double sad if on Zoom :( :(
- "Do you disclose speaks"
- Bad/miscut/misrepresented evidence :(
- Tagging cards "extinction" and nothing else :(
- Asking for cards or combining speech docs and saying its not prep????
- Asking what cards were read when no cards were marked
- Google docs :(
One Last Thing
If there is something/someone that you feel unsafe around, I am more than happy to assist you in finding the resources necessary to remedy the problem, but I ask they do not become a central component in the debate. That's not to say your concerns are not welcome or invalid, but I'd rather pursue a solution rather than give you a ballot and move on with my day. To make this possible, please feel free to email me before the round starts. I'll also try to be in the room early so that you can find me to ask questions or bring up concerns.

Things I Care About
Your burden is to make it make sense. I will evaluate tech before truth, but separation from debate decreases my threshold for things not making sense and your speaker points will benefit for choosing arguments that are intuitively compelling
Otherwise, strategic cross applications and creativity are the path to good speaks
I want to hear you debate. Cards dumps as substitution for explanation is bad. If your highlighting is just a repeat of the tag you might as well not have read the card.

Hot takes
Asking what cards were read counts as prep.
Affs need solvency advocates, neg cps (probably) don’t.
"We Meet" vs T to me means "prefer an interpretation of their interpretation that we meet over one that we dont" rather than a factual yes/no question
Disclaimer about RFDs:
I don't like telling people they lose in close rounds, and my natural response to anxiety is to be very smile-y. If you see me smiling while deciding or explaining my rfd please don't assume it means I'm going to vote one way or another, or that I was really excited to vote the way I did.
Make sure you signpost well. Off-time roadmaps are always appreciated.
I'd strongly prefer that you give the name of your card - it'll make it easier for me to keep track of your case, and I'll be more sure that you have a proper source for whatever argument/evidence you bring up. However, you can decide not to if you so wish.
Don't be rude to your opponent or in general (as you could probably already guess).
If there's something I've missed, I'm happy to clarify any questions you may have before the round starts.

*TLDR FOR NSDA NATS*
35 years of LD competition, coaching and judging
TRADITIONAL LD, WHOLE REZ, If someone proves the aff side true, I vote aff. Follow NSDA RULES.
ALL EVENTS EXCEPT PARLI NEED TO KNOW NSDA RULES OF EVIDENCE (or CHSSA RULES OF EVIDENCE) OR DO NOT EXPECT ME TO COUNT IT(NSDA MINIMUM IS "NAME" AND "DATE" ****READ IN ROUND****) Anything else is just rhetoric/logic and 99% of the time, rhetoric vs card mans card wins. ALSO: SENDING ME A SPEECH DOC does NOT equal "READ IN ROUND". If I yell clear, and you don't adapt, this is your fault.
If you put conditions on your opponent getting access to your evidence I will put conditions on counting it in my RFD. Evidence should be provided any time asked between speeches, or asked for during cx and provided between speeches. Failure to produce the card in context may result in having no access to that card on my flow/decision.

All events, It is a mark of the competitors skill to adapt to the judge, not demand that they should adapt to you. Do not get into a definitional fight without being armed with a definition..... TAG TEAM CX? *NOT A FAN* if you want to give me the impression your partner doesn't know what they are talking about, sure, go ahead, Diss your partner. Presentation skills: Stand in SPEECHES AND CX (where applicable) and in all events with only exception in PF grand.
ALL EVENTS EXCEPT PARLI NEED TO KNOW NSDA RULES OF EVIDENCE (or CHSSA RULES OF EVIDENCE) OR DO NOT EXPECT ME TO COUNT IT(NSDA MINIMUM IS "NAME" AND "DATE"****READ IN ROUND****) Anything else is just rhetoric/logic and 99% of the time, rhetoric vs card means card wins.
PUBLIC FORUM:
P.S.: there is no official grace period in PF. If you start a card or an analytic before time, then finish it. No arguments STARTED after time will be on my flow.
While I was not able to compete in public forum (It did not exist yet), the squad I coach does primarily POFO. Its unlikely that any resolution will call for a real plan as POFO tends to be propositions of fact instead of value or policy.
I am UNLIKELY to vote for a K, and I don't even vote for K in policy. Moderate speed is fine, but to my knowledge, this format was meant to be more persuasive. USE EVIDENCE and make sure you have Tags and Cites. I want a neat flow (it will never happen, but I still want it)
I WANT FRAMEWORK or I will adjudicate the round, since you didn't (Framework NOT introduced in the 1st 4 speeches will NOT be entertained, as it is a new argument. I FLOW LIKE POLICY with respect to DROPPED ARGUMENTS (if a speech goes by I will likely consider the arg dropped... this means YES I believe the 4th speaker in the round SHOULD cover both flows..)
Also: If you are framing the round in the 4th speech, I am likely to give more leeway in the response to FW or new topical definitions in 1st Summ as long as they don't drop it.
Remember, Pofo was there to counteract speed in Circuit LD, and LD was created to counter speed, so fast is ok, but tier 3 policy spread is probably not.
ALL EVENTS EXCEPT PARLI NEED TO KNOW NSDA RULES OF EVIDENCE (or CHSSA RULES OF EVIDENCE) OR DO NOT EXPECT ME TO COUNT IT(NSDA MINIMUM IS "NAME" AND "DATE" READ IN ROUND ) Anything else is just rhetoric/logic and 99% of the time, rhetoric vs card mans card wins.
PLANS IN PF
If you have one advocacy, and you claim solvency on one advocacy, and only if it is implemented, then yeah that is a plan. I will NOT weigh offense from the plan, this is a drop the argument issue for me. Keep the resolution as broad as possible. EXCEPTION, if the resolution is (rarely) EXPLICIT, or the definitions in the round imply the affirmative side is a course of action, then that is just the resolution. EXAMPLE
September 2012 - Resolved: Congress should renew the Federal Assault Weapons Ban
the aff is the resolution, not a plan and more latitude is obviously given.
If one describes several different ways for the resolution to be implemented, or to be countered, you are not committing to one advocacy, and are defending/attacking a broad swath of the resolution, and this I do NOT consider a plan.
POLICY:
If your plan is super vague, you MIGHT not get to claim your advantages. Saying you "increase" by merely reading the text of the resolution is NOT A PLAN. Claiming what the plan says in cx is NOT reading a plan. Stop being sloppy.
I *TRY* to be Tabula Rasa (and fail a lot of the time especially on theory, Ks and RVI/fairness whines)
I trained when it was stock issues, mandatory funding plan spikes (My god, the amount of times I abused the grace commission in my funding plank), and who won the most nuclear wars in the round.
Presentation skills: Stand in SPEECHES AND CX (where applicable) and in all events with only exception in PF grand.
Please don't diss my event.
I ran
Glassification of toxic/nuclear wastes, and Chloramines on the H2O topic
Legalize pot on the Ag topic
CTBT on the Latin America topic.
In many years I have never voted neg on K (in CX), mainly because I have never seen an impact (even when it was run in POFO as an Aff).(Ironic given my LD background)
I will freely vote on Topicality if it is run properly (but not always XT), and have no problem buying jurisdiction......
I HAVE finally gotten to judge Hypo-testing round (it was fun and hilarious).
One of my students heard from a friend in Texas that they are now doing skits and non topical/personal experiece affs, feel free, BUT DON'T EXPECT ME TO VOTE FOR IT.
I will vote on good perms both ways (see what I said above about XT)
SPREAD: I was a tier B- speed person in the south. I can flow A level spread *IF* you enunciate. slow down momentarily on CITES and TAGS and blow through the card (BUT I WILL RE TAG YOUR SUBPOINTS if your card does not match the tag!!!!!!)
If you have any slurred speech, have a high pitched voice, a deep southern or NY/Jersey drawl, or just are incapable of enunciating, and still insist on going too fast for your voice, I will quit flowing and make stuff up based on what I think I hear.
I do not ask for ev unless there is an evidentiary challenge, so if you claim the card said something and I tagged it differently because YOU slurred too much on the card or mis-tagged it, that's your fault, not mine.
LD
I WILL JUDGE NSDA RULES!!!! I am NOT tabula rasa on some theory, or on plans. Plans are against the rules of the event as I learned it and I tend to be an iconoclast on this point. LD was supposed to be a check on policy spread, and I backlash, if you have to gasp or your voice went up two octaves then see below... Topicality FX-T and XT are cool on both sides but most other theory boils down to WHAAAAAAHHHH I don't want to debate their AFF so I will try to bs some arguments.
-CIRCUIT LD REFER to policy prefs above in relation to non topical and performance affs, I will TRY to sometimes eval a plan, but I wish they would create a new event for circuit LD as it is rarely values debate.
- I LOVE PHILOSOPHY so if you want to confuse your opponent who doesn't know the difference between Kant, Maslow and Rawls, dazzle away :-).
Clear VP and VC (or if you call it framework fine, but it is stupid to tell someone with a framework they don't have a VC and vice versa, its all semantics) are important but MORE IMPORTANT is WHY IS YOURS BETTER *OR* WHY DO YOU MEET THEIRS TOO and better (Permute)
IF YOU TRY TO Tier A policy spread, or solo policy debate, you have probably already lost UNLESS your opponent is a novice. Not because I can't follow you, but because THIS EVENT IS NOT THE PLACE FOR IT!!! However there are several people who can talk CLEARLY and FAST that can easily dominate LD, If you cannot be CLEAR and FAST play it safe and be CLEAR and SLOW. Speaker points are awarded on speaking, not who wins the argument....
Sub-pointing is still a good idea, do not just do broad overviews. plans and counter-plans need not apply as LD is usually revolving around the word OUGHT!!!! Good luck claiming Implementation FIAT on a moral obligation. I might interrupt if you need to be louder, but its YOUR job to occasionally look at the judge to see signals to whether or not they are flowing, so I will be signalling that, by looking at you funny or closing my eyes, or in worst case leaning back in my chair and visibly ignoring you until you stop ignoring the judge and fix the problem. I will just be making up new tags for the cards I missed tags for by actually listening to the cards, and as the average debater mis-tags cards to say what they want them to, this is not advisable.

I repeat, Speed = Bad in LD, and I will not entertain a counter-plan in LD If you want to argue Counterplans and Plans, get a partner and go to a policy tournament.
DISCLOSURE: I regard disclosure as a tool for rich schools with multiple employees to prep out schools with less resources. This is not a theory arg I am synmpathetic to.

Extend warrants.
Hey everyone. I debated for Marlborough from 2016-2020. I went to the TOC my senior year. I'm now a junior at Stanford, where I don't debate. I'm the most experienced w LARP/util debate as well as theory/T, although I do love a well executed Cap K. When evaluating rounds, I start on the impact level and work backwards.
Full disclosure: I've been out of the activity for a while, but I'm super excited to judge. Please slow down and clearly define topic lingo.
I think that debate should be devoted to the rigorous testing of ideas/hypothesis testing: while there definitely is a strategic aspect to the activity, I will be mad at you if you try and corrupt an educational opportunity by reading shoes theory or something else along those lines and sacrificing education to win in a ~hyper-strategic~ way.
Overview
Truth——————————X———Tech
1. Be nice to your opponent and the judge. If you are rude or mean to your opponent I will lower your speaks. I have a very low tolerance for this, especially if you're using it for some weird strategic leverage.
2. I have vivid facial expressions. Use this to your advantage.
3. You don't have to take prep to send the doc but don't be sketchy about it. I'm good at noticing when you engage in sketchiness and I will a) call you out for it and b) lower your speaks.
4. I'm fine with spreading but slow down for tags, authors, analytics, interps, etc. Don't go your full speed or I will likely miss something. I have minor hearing issues so you will probably like the result the round a lot less if you blaze through analytics (and don't send them in the email chain).
5. A lot of evidence in LD is really bad. Please have good evidence and call your opponents out for having bad evidence. I am unlikely to vote for evidence that is miscut or doesn't have warrants. I love evidence comparison and I will reward you for knowing the warrants in your ev.
6. Go ahead and read your nuclear war impacts -- I evaluate impacts by magnitude*probability unless instructed otherwise. BUT there are really great affs/disads that don't use nuke war impacts. I will be impressed by a unique AC or DA that is well-written, has great ev, and that is well-researched. On that note, please weigh and compare impacts and tell me what weighing mechanisms are the most important (e.g. should I default to probability or magnitude first?)
7. Extend warrants. If you don't, I'll have a hard time voting for you. The more rounds I watch, the more I get frustrated about the lack of warranted arguments in the 1ar/nr/2ar.
8. The NR/2AR should collapse.
9. A good CX will reward you with high speaks, especially if you know the warrants in your evidence (see the general theme here?)
10. I lean neg on non-T affs; I will vote for T-FW or the aff based on the debate that happens. I am most persuaded by predictability/argument testing args on framework.
11. I will drop you for reading arguments that are a form of moral blackmail (e.g. vote for me to get more women debaters into out rounds, vote for me or else I will be sad, vote for this person because he said xyz on Twitter, etc). If anything bad is happening in the debate, then I would feel more comfortable voting a person down, but I will not adjudicate a "person x said sexist things on facebook messenger 8 months ago" debate.
12. Speech times are set. Prep can be used for CX, but CX cannot be used for prep. Prep ends when you are done compiling the doc.
13. I flow CX. CX is binding.
14. Have extensions for your cases, but no need to extend individual cards unless they are very important. By an extension, I mean something <30 seconds for the AC, maybe up to a minute for off case negative positions.
15. I'm only interventionist on args that are obviously silly (e.g. must spec location of debater, must wear a hat, must only wear red) as well as tricks. If you're debating a trick, just say "tricks are for kids" and do a thumbs down, that is a sufficient enough response.
16. I will stop flowing when the timer goes off, not when you decide to stop 5-20 seconds after. I'll let you finish your sentence, but it has to be a quick conclusion, not a sentence with infinite semicolons.
17. People I agree with/have been coached by are Adam Torson, Hailey Robertson, Ben Rosenthal, Dan Miyamoto, and Michael O'Krent.
By arg:
FW: I am highly skeptical of Kant and other impact-exclusionary frameworks. However, I believe that under a consequentialist framework, zero percent risk is a thing. Also, truth testing is silly in my opinion — I definitely default to comparative worlds. I feel comfortable evaluating Hobbes, libertarianism, and variants of util. I can evaluate Kant, but I will be sad. I default to epistemic modesty, but can be convinced the other way if you win that arg. I am unlikely to vote on theistic frameworks, e.g. GCB. I also think that AFC args make no sense — this is a debate!
T/Theory: I think both education and fairness are voters, but one can be more important (prolly education>fairness), and one can be the internal link to the other. Impact out your standards and make sure I know why your standards outweigh their and how they link harder to voters. On this note, I dislike Nebel T and RVIs — make real args/plans are good. I lean pragmatics > semantics but if you win the inverse, then I'll vote for it. If you're about to give the 2ar and the NR went for T/theory, no need to extend case. If you're giving the NR and are kicking T, no need to go on this page if there's no RVI (which there won't be if I'm the judge, I hope).
The K: I'm pretty well versed in cap, fem, orientalism/anti-colonialism, and queer theory, as well as IR. However, you must have an explanation for these arguments to win them and you must explicitly spell out their implications to win those, too. I am fairly sure need to win your theory of power (whether that's based on ontology, superstructure, language, etc) to win the debate. Your alt/method also needs to solve — I have no idea what "breaking the structures of semiotic capitalistic linguistic indeterminacy through an embrace of the Real" means unless you explain what it looks like, who does it, examples of it, etc. I think that critical theory at times can be incredibly esoteric and that is bad praxis (comes from my view that debate should be a breeding ground for irl activism and policymaking) — if you can explain your alt/method at a 10th grade reading level I will be happy. I have some internal bias against pessimism, as I think any progress that materially helps oppressed people is good; however, you can win pess in front of me.
K Affs: Go ahead, but same stuff with explaining above applies. Make sure that you have a solution to a problem that has solvency. Disclaimer: I anticipate that in front of me, non-T affs are an uphill battle, but I will vote for T-FW or the aff based on the debate that happens. I am most persuaded by predictability/argument testing args on framework.
Util/Policy/LARP: This is what I love, this is what I did best. I get frustrated by untrue DAs, but I will vote on them. I love well explained, probably true DAs. Say disad and counterplan, a few more syllables to sound better won't hurt. I'm good for hard right stuff to soft left stuff — I've read both — just be prepared to leverage your ideology against Ks/NCs if needed. Also, I would prefer a bunch of clever, well thought out analytics to a dump of backfiles that say No China War from 2012. Don't have your disad link into your counter-plan. Do read perms that are smart and contextual to the specific advocacy.
CP: I'm fine with multi-plank counterplans, PICs, condo (1-2 is fine, 3 or >3 is pushing it) — however, I will vote on theory against these args. I will judge kick if instructed, this can be contested.
DA: To kick this, extend link defense. In the NC, please do not have a bunch of silly link args that are smashed together. If you're reading PTX, keep your uniqueness updated.

Speaks
These are always going to be subjective but I'll try my best to average at a 28.5. I will reward highly for good strategy, good quality evidence, pathos (to an extent), and compliance with everything outlined above. Also, clarity. I cap speaks at a 28 for asking for high speaks.
I will tank your speaks if you are trying to spread out/be hyper esoteric against a novice/trad debater — be nice and make the activity accessible.
If you're funny, be funny. If not, know I have a bad sense of humor.
Other
Be nice to each other and read arguments you enjoy.
I'll disclose who won and give a RFD.
I am a parent judge judging LD.
Please speak at reasonable speed so that I can understand your arguments.
If you plan to speed/"spreading", please be clear. Be ready to share your case, more so if you plan to speed.
Clarity on framework, value and value criterion are positives to start with.

Hi! I'm Emma, and I debate for Marlborough.
I run mostly policy arguments, but am fine with T/theory, most common Ks, DAs, CPs, etc. I'm not a great judge for phil/less common Ks and probably have a higher bar for explanation than most judges but I'll definitely vote for them. I think a lot of tricks are silly and it's probably not educational to read them in a novice/JV division against much less experienced debaters. To be clear, I'll vote on anything that's not racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, ableist, etc. but your speaks will probably suffer.
Don't be mean, especially when you're the more experienced debater.
If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out! If I don't answer, you can probably assume my views on debate/argument preference are pretty similar to my teammates/coaches (Cameron Lange, Julia Steinberg, Lydia Dimsu, etc.), who all have more substantial paradigms than mine that you can read.

please time yourself
worlds:
ask me anything before round!
ld:
i qualled to the toc my senior year and taught at nsd flagship & tdc. if you have questions / for sdocs: angelayufei@gmail.com
shortcuts:
1 - phil/theory. i probably give more weight to k v phil interactions, phil v theory interactions, and k interactions in a truth testing paradigm than the average tx judge. i also enjoy interesting paradigm issue interactions on theory
2 - tricks/larp. i’m not familiar with the topic though, nor do i know what the principle of explosion is - you still need to explain things!
3 - k unless they're reps ks, which i read a lot of. i prefer lbl to floating overviews that im not sure what to do with.
speaks:
- have the doc ready to send ahead of time
- i enjoy a good cx
- i'll call slow and clear as many times as i need to but speaks will drop. im fine w ur opponent calling slow/clear too as long as it's not malicious.
- scripting the entire speech and/or big words without explanation is an ick - i have no idea what, for example, hapticality is.
- postrounding / being aggressive (esp against trad/novices/minorities) makes me sad
miscellaneous:
- you have to provide evi to your opponent/judge. that does not mean you have to disclose (you can have that debate) but should show them, if requested. evi contestation (clipping, miscutting, etc.) is evaluated however the debaters decide: theory shell, stopping the round, etc.
- reading problematic args (eg racism good) is obvs an L. however, the validity of death good, trigger warnings, etc. are debatable (at least in front of me)
- online rounds - record your speeches in case internet gets funky
- i think the ability to spin evi should be rewarded; having good evi helps but "call for the card" puts me in a weird position. do that weighing for me.
- send any relevant screenshot for violations
i don't want to use defaults but here they are for accountability:
- comparative worlds
- permissibility negates, the side with less of a change from the status quo under comparative worlds gets presumption
- epistemic confidence
- dta on theory, dtd on t, competing interps, no rvis
- no judge kick
