I am like a debate dinosaur. Maybe not a dinosaur, but a majestic unicorn that wants to be understood. I have been doing this activity since 1991 and I have literally done/coached every event. I believe that this is a community and we should all treat each other with respect.
I can flow. My skills are not what they used to be, but I can flow. Please be super clear in your organization and if I can't understand you, I will let you know. I am good with theory and enjoy it when done well. I was debating in college when critical arguments became widespread. I understand them and value them. I don't have argument preference...do what makes you happy and pick a strategy that you thing you can win with. Please be clear with your decision calculus.

I have been judging speech and debate tournaments for five years with the bulk of my experience focused on speech events. I have an extensive background in political consulting, speech writing and public speaking. I prefer a more traditional approach with a comfortable conversational speed. However, I am fine with rapid conversational style speaking mixed with spreading IF your value criterion, definitions (important) and contentions are clear and audible. I prefer quality over quantity so, if you plan to spread make sure the plethora of information is necessary. In other words, I'm more impressed with those that provide the most content using the fewest words.
Although a charismatic presentation can often sell your argument on the surface, in LD I am more influenced by your content. I can appreciate passion in your arguments provided you are being respectful to your opponent. I tend to prioritize value criterion and contention level arguments. I'm open minded to progressive arguments but they are not preferred.
I love a good CX! Your questions matter. I tend to give high marks to those that can strategically ask questions that require simple answers. Furthermore, those that can take control of the CX by respectfully not allowing their opponent to beyond the scope of the question, will also gain high marks from me. I believe there is a strategy to an effective cross and I am paying particular attention to those that make those most of their time.
I give speaker points from 25 - 30. Please feel free to ask questions before the round begins.

1. The faster you speak, the greater risk you run that neither your judge or your opponent will catch what you're saying. I am not against speaking fast per se, but if you talk so quickly that you slur words and I can't understand you, it will put you at a disadvantage. Even if you include me in an email chain, clarity > speed and concision/potency > sheer volume of words.
2. I look for clash, which I define as a dialectically progressive correspondence between argument and counterargument. I won't look favorably on a rebuttal that is simply a rehash of your case. Don't just tell me that your previous point refutes their contention; give me a new reason why.
3. LD: Stronger cases will have strong value-criterion framework. If you depart from this convention, your justification must be solid and explicit.
4. Off-time road maps are great, but if it consists only of, "First, I'll be going over my opponent's case, then going over my case," then don't bother; that's the bare-bones function of a rebuttal speech anyway and I already assume you'll do that. Give me more structure: signposts and summaries that reinforce your speech's structure throughout are even better.
5. Don't be rude. It will cost you dearly in speaker points.
6. I reserve the right to determine for myself what the voting issues are for the round in a neutral evaluation of your case, your opponent's contentions against it, and what has arisen to carry the most ethical and logical weight during the discourse. However, you are more than welcome to advise me as to what the voting issues should be from your perspective.
7. I'd be delighted to shake your hand after the round if you wish.

I did debate through high school and am good with any arguments you want to run, as well as any speed that is comprehensible.
If you don't signpost and I flow something in the wrong place, I'll be a little sad.
Be nice. Debate is meant to practice civil public discourse, it's not a competition to see who can be more passive-aggressive.

I am a parent of a debater and I have been judging a variety of speech and debate events since 2020. I am also a college professor. I have a PhD in art history and I specialize in medieval art. Currently, however, I am mostly employed as one of the associate Vice Presidents for Research at Utah State University where I oversee the Undergraduate Research program. I have 30 years of classroom teaching experience at the college level, and I've seen a lot of student presentations in my time! I'm always impressed that high school debaters are so much more practiced at public speaking than many college students.
To me, strong speakers are deliberate and communicate with a variety of tones, volumes, and smooth nonverbal movement. Less is more; if a speaker is talking too fast, I can't process the message.
Debate events:
I look for sound reasoning in which demonstrable facts are accurately represented, reputable sources are cited, and logical fallacies are avoided. Respect for your fellow debaters in paramount; if you do not listen and respond appropriately when that is part of the debate format, I will be less impressed with whatever you do when it is your turn to speak.
Speech events:
Authenticity is more valuable than cleverness, though by the same token, I have limited patience with melodrama. Please listen quietly and respectfully while others are speaking. I will notice if you do not.

Assistant coach for Davis High School, I am laid back judge with lots of experience debating and judging.
The only thing I care about is that you signpost throughout your speeches and give me voters in your final speech, Everything else is free game.
If you want something from me to perform better to my style of judging, I really am a sucker for clear logical structure. I am awful at visualization, so if you clearly establish your line of thought in regard to your case and responses to your opponent for me to write down I will be SO happy. It is two birds with one stone, If you put emphasis on clarity, you are a stronger debater and you have made evaluation of the round easier in your favor.

I am a high school English teacher and know how to write effective essays and speeches. I do not, however, have formal debate training. As a high school English teacher, I value the writing of the speech itself. As a debater, you should go into each round assuming that I know nothing about the topic at hand. Give definitions, explain concepts, speak clearly and explicitly. You can’t convince me to choose your side if I don’t understand your side. Please teach me before you convince me. If you choose to speak quickly, be warned that you need to still speak clearly. If I cannot hear you I cannot judge you.
I typically choose debate winners based on the success of their claims, including those made in crossfire, as they are presented with rhetorical strength, including effectiveness of logos, ethos, and pathos.

I have experience in a wide range of debate and speech events. Here are my paradigms for some.
LD-
I did LD for 3 years. I love a good ethical, ought and should debate- if the topic allows for it. Please note that I don't think solvency of the problem is what LD debate is. We need to touch on how the actions we take will impact in the real world, but to win my ballot you must win the moral and ethical debate- ought we to do something not just would it solve the problem (unless you use Consequentialism for V or C and win framework). I studied some philosophy and ethics in college but please make clear what your value and criteria are. That way both me and your opponent's know exactly what you mean. Make your contentions clear and logical. Framework is important and I like you to tell me what you think the voters should be for the round. Clash will always keep me more engaged and I think it is a key part of any debate, so I will be factoring that into my decision. If you run K's or progressive you better make sure they are VERY good, topical and still allow for clash.
Impromptu-
I love impromptu. Please try new things. I will judge based on devilry and content. I love if you can include some humor, because we all need a good laugh! I like structure in a speech and a take-away. What should I get out of listening to you for the last 7 minutes?
Policy or Team-
I did team my first year of debate. I can flow fairly fast but if I put my pen down you have lost me and it might be worth your time to go back a bit and catch me up. I don't mind well done spew but if I can't understand you it won't matter how fast you deliver your content. For policy I don't mind topicality, solvency or similar arguments.
Exempt-
I follow both domestic and foreign events so present information that is current and correct. I will judge on content and delivery.
When reading my ballots please understand that I try to offer some ways you can improve with every round. I always liked ballots like this because I felt I could take that and be a better debater. These are NOT my RFD. My RFD may include some of those. For example, if you failed to make an argument that was necessary to refute your opponent than I might put it both places. I am not a huge fan of K debate so if you run one, you better make sure you get better solvency and/or lower impacts and MAKE THAT ARGUMENT. If it's in LD you better also make the argument that it is the most ethical course of action. I promise to always try my hardest to be fair and make my RFD be who had the better round.

Hello! I am the editorial director for a state history and social studies publishing firm. I have a background in English, Legal Studies, and Education. I taught AP Language for 7 years and was the advisor for Student Government.
I am a flow judge. I will judge based on the strength of your evidence and arguments, countering your opponents claims, and clarity. You can speak fast but if I can't understand you, you might not get the points. I prefer for you to avoid filler words like "um" and "uh" etc. I will not judge based on the stance, but on the strength that you can argue your stance.
