Policy Affs
- Fine, read whatever.
- I love sketchy edge of the topic affs. Be creative there are fun ways to read these affs.
- Don't have a preference between soft left and big stick, however, I didn't read a big stick aff my senior year.
K Affs
- They are good, have lots of experience with these.
- Find creative and interesting ways to answer these affs, not just the same generic strat.
- Presumption is a winnable strategy, explain your method.
- PICs out parts of the aff are my favorite.
- I can not emphasize this enough, you should actually engage in the aff.
Fw v K affs
- Been on both sides of this argument a lot. In high school, I primarily went for a clash impact and spent a lot of time thinking about how to beat fw as well as go for it.
- It's an argument I will vote on.
- Fairness isn't an impact, but if you win it is I will vote on it.
- Clash and Topic education are the most persuasive impacts, but you need to explain why.
- Almost guaranteed I vote aff if you don't go to the case page in the 2nr
- You are probably getting not high speaks if you go 1 off fw, or 2 off fw, and a ptx da that you concede for a link to fairness in the block.
- a good counter interp that solves some neg offense is pretty hard to beat imo
- I think switch-side debate is not a good argument
- the 2nr doesn't need a TVA, but it is a really good way to get my ballot
- Affs should stick to 2-3 good, well impacted out, maybe even carded disads. Don't just shotgun fake disads and go for what they drop.
K v Policy
- This is the debate I am most experienced in and enjoy watching the most. The past few years, these have been almost all of my debates. This doesn't mean you should give less explanation on your theory. Pretend I don't understand.
- In high school, I mainly read queer theory and in college mainly cybernetics. I'm comfortable judging any K though, but if you are a pomo team you will need to explain more.
- Aff teams should USE THEIR 1AC
- You get links to any part of the 1ac, if it's in the 1ac it's fair game.
- You don't need an alt in the 2nr
- Hyper specific links to affs go a long way
- You should have a robust explanation of the alt and if it solves the aff
- Perf cons annoy me a lot and justify the reps of the aff. If the 2ar goes for perf cons bad justifies perm do both, I don't see a world I vote neg.
K v K debates
- These debates are super fun to watch, however, can get messy quick, keep the flows clean, and give judge instruction in these debates
- Perms exist in a method debate
- Make your theory of power clear
- The debate will probably be decided on who frames the perm the best, and if the alt solves the aff
T
- I think competing interpretations is probably true and find reasonability arguments to be uncompelling almost always. If you're not topical you should have an offensive reason that you're not. If you are topical then you should win why your vision of the resolution is superior to the negatives.

- Fine, specific links are preferred over topic links
Cps
- This is where I lack experience, probably have gone for a counterplan under 10 times ever, but don't be afraid to go for one, I will be able to evaluate the debate.
- Ngl I'm going to be lost in a complex competition debate.
- You need a solvency advocate and it should probably be specific to the aff.
Theory
- Anything other than condo is a reason to reject the argument
- perf cons are bad
- Don't be afraid to go for theory if its mishandled, don't just spread blocks back and forth though.
Random
- If you are losing don't give up, its time to pull out the tricks, go for condo, go for some meme its not over til its over

-i think a lot of the time teams read a k in the 1nc as a throw away arg which is not a good strat - either put a lot more on case or utilize the k you read
-fairness being an impact is a toss up - this one's up to debaters
-have a terminal impact in the 2nr!!
-even if you dont have a lot of cards on the alt, some good analytics will go a long way
I am fairly new to debate so I am still learning some of the fundamentals of debate. I prefer debates that are reasonably slower pace with a bent towards flow policymaking.

This happens more often than anyone wants to admit: If anyone in the room has made an offensive comment of a severe degree I will automatically vote against you. If an argument is not made in the debate about the comment, I will still vote against you if I subjectively decide it warrants that response. Your speaks will suffer regardless. I will only stop the debate if I am asked to by a debater, if I am I will.
Other than that, have fun and be nice to each other. You should do what you do, I'll adapt to you. I am comfortable with most everything. With that being said, I wish people did a better job of starting off slower, give me a sec to adjust to your voice by starting off at like 85% speed or so.. Especially if you're starting off with a theory or T argument.
An argument is a claim and a warrant. You need to win an argument AND a reason why that argument means I should vote for you. Don't just throw a bunch of cards at me, it makes me sad. I think the most important speeches are the rebuttals, write my ballot for me.. I like to be lazy, tell me what I'm voting on and why. I don't like reading evidence after a debate, I won't unless I have to or am told to.
I tend to be swayed by well-explained turns case arguments. Tell me how different flows and arguments interact with each other. I wish more people read impact turns.
Making choices is good.. I wont judge kick an alt or CP unless I am told to.
Specific arguments
Kritiks: I am most likely to vote for a K with a specific link and a well explained alternative (Do not assume I understand your alternative) and how it solves the aff/affs impacts. Furthermore, I think impact framing arguments are also very important and needs to be clearly extrapolated because I will use that to frame the rest of the debate.
Planless Aff’s: You do you, I have less experience with this style of affirmative. Yes, I will vote on impact turns to T.

About me: Currently a Sophomore at KU Honors studying Political Science and Global&International Studies with minors in Public Policy and Latin American&Carribean Studies. This is my second year coaching for Shawnee Mission East High School (graduated in '21). I debated at SME for four years and three on the TOC circuit. As for my argumentative history, I read both kritikal (Abolition, afro-pess, cap) and big stick policy affirmatives in high school and look forward to judging debates in both areas. I am also currently coaching teams who read both types of arguments.
Research interests: Russian foreign policy, Latin American Politics, and environmental policy.
Top Level: Be kind to each other and read whatever you like! I think condo and pics are generally good and theory-based arguments are a reason to reject the argument, not the team. Detailed impact calc is very important, contextualize it to the round. I value well-explained internal link chains, quirky disad/cp debates, and just overall efficient speeches. Judge instruction is important and use cross x to your advantage. Also just do what you want I do not have huge preferences, my job as a judge is to adapt.
Pet peeves: "3,2,1 starting NOW", talking over your partner, wasting time, not logging into wifi until round start time and then taking forever <3

Tech > Truth
- I have a lot less topic experience/knowledge than I have had on previous topics. I will definitely need more explaining of things than people who worked at or taught at camps over the summer. This will still be true throughout the season as I spend less time thinking about the topic than in previous years. Simply because I am less involved.
- Over the last couple years of judging I have noticed a trend of people flying through analytics at top speed off the speech doc, if you want me to flow them it is in your best interest to slow down here. If you are doing this and not realizing it my body language will definitely tell you I am not flowing.
- I will not evaluate arguments about an individual's character or behavior that occurred outside of the debate. Serious, good faith concerns should be brought to the tournament administration, not to the judge of a debate, if you have issue before the round, tournament, etc.
- not great/terrible for K v K debates, would rather be upfront for you. Doesn’t mean that I won't try my hardest for you all but it has never been in my realm of expertise, link/perm work is a must, with more explanation than you usually might do
T: As mentioned I have little to no experience with this topic, for T debates that means I need more explanation of what what they competing versions of the topic look like. I think the internal link and impact level of these debates often gets lost, and because of that I found reasonability to be more compelling than I used to in some debates.
Theory: I would certainly prefer to judge debates about the substance of the aff vs the neg, however theory debates are inevitable and here are some quick thoughts:
- I think more teams should go for it, but it should be unique to the debate. I find general arguments of copy and pasted blocks through each speech rather boring and repetitive, and will often conclude there is little offense to reject another team or argument on this. Ways you can fix this, make it unique to the debate ie: "it is not just that they read 4 condo, but the nature of all 4 "doing the whole aff", in tandem with how "CP competition works on this topic makes it uniquely bad..."
- I do generally find condo to be good, doesn’t mean I wont vote for it but it should have nuance to it vs passed down blocks.
FW:
I generally think affs should be about hypothetical government action on the topic. However that is my opinion and I will do my best to leave it at the door. I tend to vote 50/50 in these debates here are something that may be helpful for you.
- I generally find arguments about fairness compelling vs arguments about truth testing etc.
- I think clash in these debates are good. Teams need to apply their arguments to what has happened in round. This means you probably shouldn't be reading the same blocks every debate. If your aff this means a 1ar that is contextual to the block. If your neg this means actually answering the DAs the 2ac read etc.
- round vision and the ballot: I should know what voting aff or neg does. A lot of the time this is likely done via impact calc but can often be lost and makes it much harder. By the end of the 2ar I shouldn’t have to re read the 1ac to determine that or by the end of the 2nr I should have to re read the 1nc to determine that etc.
DAS:
They are great, Impact calc is great it should be done! Link arguments are only as specific or generic as you make them. If you read a generic one that is fine, but spin can make it more specific etc. Same is true with link and internal link defense.
CP:
I love them, they should probably compete with the aff. That can certainly be a debate to be had, but generally I find that in debates where teams are technically equal the truth of the argument typically shapes that tech.
Ks:
I think of Ks as a cp with a net benefit, the more specific it is to the aff the more likely I am to vote on it. I’m not well read in lit at all so explanation goes a long way. I think you should have a somewhat specific link to the aff. I do feel like at the end of the debate the aff should get to weigh the 1ac, in what context is up for debate but im very hard to convince otherwise. Link of omissions are nonstarters. My advice is go for what you are most comfortable with and I will do my best as a judge to leave my biases at the door and evaluate the debate.
Case debate:
This is is a lost art. I think more teams need to be willing to engage with the aff. This can be done on a substance level, impact turns, smart analytical arguments, theory, etc. I have no issue with the neg reading as many offcase args as you want, but if you are doing so at the expense of a well developed case debate than don’t be surprised if I conclude a high risk of the aff, when there is little engagement with it.
Other things/pet peeves
-I think there is a fine line between being an ass and being competitive. If done well your speaks will be rewarded but if done wrong you will not be happy with them rule of thumb don’t be an ass, be respectful and have fun.
-physically mark your cards. if you do not and another team asks for a marked copy I will make you take prep within my arbitrary judgement of what that is.
- you must physically read the rehighlighting of the other teams cards simply saying “I have inserted a rehighlighting here” is not an argument in any sense please read the card. The only exception to this is if it is a small part of a card and you have explained the argument it makes in your speech.
-Clipping will result with a loss with 0 speaks. I do follow along in speech docs so if I see you doing it I won’t hesitate. If you call someone out for it you must have audio evidence of it.

Introduction
I'm an assistant coach for debate and forensics at Blue Valley North. As a theater and English teacher of nearly 20 years, interp. events are probably my strongest area. You should probably see me more as a community judge with some background in the event rather than someone that pays close attention. I'm more of a sponsor than a coach most weekends that just makes sure students get to their rooms. As of October 2023, I have only judged a couple rounds and have little contact with the topic research file.
Policy...
I know this isn's succinct and what advanced debaters are going to want to hear or debate to, but I hope the following helps.
1. I'm a theater and English Lit. teacher first. Don't just read at me. I think this is an oral communication event. Communicative issues and telling the story are still important. I'm not going to try to listen or flow speed. Honestly, I'm tired of people reading a powertag with a whole bunch of stuff they don't really understand or not linking it to the round we're in. I'll jump on the email chain/speechdrop, but I'd rather be listening to your rather than reading highlighted text.
2. I'd like to think that I'd listen to just about anything in the room and be willing to vote on it, but I'm probably a policy maker who prefers reasonable and probable impacts over magnitude. I haven't had a lot of Ks to consider or vote on so I'm not sure how I feel about them philosophically. I'm not a games player that will vote a team down for missing one minor arg. on T in the 1AR. I don't like ridiculous spreading args. from the neg. that then kicks everything that doesn't stick. I'd rather have a couple speeches debating the merits of an argument and find some depth than shell out ten things that don't matter.
3. I'm good with judge instructions. Explain to me why I should be voting a certain way. I'm not going to be reading every sentence of your evidence and make the arguments for you. I'm also not an expert in the event that will know every piece of the game y'all do.
4. If you open the abuse story in the round, you better not be doing it elsewhere. I think new in the 2 is typically slimy if off case, but I'm primarily talking anything running a ton of T you plan to kick in the 2NR, turning CX into a speech, stalling finding a timer and prep time, fiddling with the file share, et al. If you waste time on an abuse story when you could have used that time to debate this issue, or your opponent points out you were just as or more abusive in the round, I'll vote you down for wasting our time discussing it. Debate the topic.
Congress
I've scored a few rounds in Kansas invitationals over the years. Probably 5-10 rounds. I've used Congress as a model for various classroom activities and projects in my English and Speech classes and worked with students here and there on some speeches. I enjoy an efficient and respectful chamber with obvious connections and clash between speeches to show active listening. Yes, speeches will be prepared with credible evidence and relevant sourcing, but there should be clear sections responding to the debate in the room. Strong POs will be considered in ranking. As a theater director for 10 years, I'm used to watching the entire stage. You are always "on" in a session. A congressperson who is listening, engaging, efficient, and respectful will be rewarded over one who is simply domineering.
LD - I've judged these rounds here and there and at the national tournament, but it has been awhile. Be sure to take care of the value and VC debate as that is the framework that lets me know how to vote in the round. Evidence to show how real world examples have worked are great, but don't forget the values work. This is why I like this style of debate. We aren't focused primarily on the policy but the ideas and values. If you keep that in mind and can explain it for a theater/English teacher that prefers a communicative style, you'll have a better chance at the ballot.
PFD - Well, this is something I haven't seen a lot of, so I'd encourage you to look at the other comments regarding LD and Policy and cross apply to this event. Haven't coached it. Only seen a few rounds of it.

Forensics:
For the debate events, organization and rhetoric will significantly help your logic land with me, but proper analysis of your position and your opponent's position should shine through regardless.
If you're looking at my paradigm for speech or dramatic events: first of all, hello and break a leg. Emote and project unless you're not doing so for a purpose. My feedback may be dry and my face may not show it during your performance but I am almost always moved by your performances.

Policy:
I competed at and am comfortable with most levels of debate but I enjoy logical policy proposals and realistic analysis. One of my degrees is in philosophy, so I am comfortable getting into the weeds on theory and the K—just make sure you are. That said, I prefer clarity over all and specificity of arguments a close second.
Bigotry or discrimination--whether it’s to your opponents, your partner, myself, or anyone else not in the room--will lose you the round. I also understand this is a competition, but lack of respect for one another will lose you speaks.
While I will refer to your speech doc if necessary, I physically flow and I need to actually hear and understand it for it to matter to my ballot. Signpost clearly and make it plain when you are moving on to your next argument. I'll give you two clears, then you will see me either writing or looking at you, if I’m not doing one of those things, slow down or move on.
If your evidence has warrants that you’re pulling through, I will listen for them but I won’t do the work for you; point them out and present the clash and why it matters to the round or it won’t matter to me or the ballot.
In the end, I will vote how y’all tell me to vote, so providing and pulling through a framework is important even if it’s not contested as part of the debate. If none is provided, I will fall back on policy-making but I still need impact calculus and analysis of the claims, warrants, and clash to sway my ballot.
Debate Judging Philosophy and Paradigm

I have been judging in the Kansas and Missouri areas for a lot of seasons. I am a debate fan and passionate about the activity. Here are some random thoughts that I found and it is a compilation of how I judge. I wrote some of it and I am pretty sure I pilfered from others:

The round is about the participants, this should be a fun and educational activity. Fun includes being: courteous, respectful, topical, clever, clear, knowledgeable, strategic, timely and persuasive.

This judge’s paradigm is about me. Use it to your advantage or discard it. It is just a tool for you to analyze. I also feel this is an exercise for my ego and show how knowledgeable and uncool I actually am.

We have debated this topic for a couple of months and it is now national qualifier time. I will expect arguments to be better and well defined this time of year.

I want to be persuaded. I encourage you to sell me on your arguments. I can flow; I can pull arguments across the flow but tell me why it benefits your side of the debate and if it contributes to your advantage, impacts, turn or solvency.

Good on case debates seem to produce the best debates.

Aggressive strategies produce the most interesting debates. I have voted and advocated revolution, nuclear war, abuse, theory, topicality, politics and political capital. I feel that I will listen and reward teams that argue and persuade me the most.
- I like topicality. Teams that run it usually do well with me especially if it is against a non-topical affirmative. I default to competitive interpretation. 2NR focus on topicality is critical and usually determines how big I evaluate it.

Speed is good and strategic. I think there is good speed and bad speed. Persuasive arguments combined with good word economy almost always outweigh bad speed.

I won’t ask for evidence after the round. Debate is a communication activity and the evidence should be communicated in round. If I don’t understand the evidence in the way it is presented in round, I most likely will ignore it.

I don't coach that many fast teams. Clarity is what I put the most stock in.
Speed=4-6/10
Debaters that clean messy debates up will get my ballot.
I understand the K to a serviceable degree, but I wouldn't stake your hopes on winning on it in front of me unless you're just miles ahead on it.
Experience:
I competed in Kansas in both speech and policy debate for 4 years in high school.
I've judged and coached for 10 years. I tend to judge infrequently, and I haven't had many rounds on the economic inequality topic.
Judge Philosophy:
Generally: Run the things you want to run. My background basically makes me a policy hack. If you want to read something out of my wheelhouse just make sure you have good explanations. I coach teams that compete on a mostly traditional (meaning there's an emphasis on communication, and the debates are much slower) debate circuit, where it is seldom we see that type of argumentation. However I have coached a handful of varsity teams that do contemporary varsity style debate and I'd say they're pretty damn good. I may not be the most qualified judge when it comes to very fast and very technical debating.
Inclusion: I think that the debate space should be accessible to everyone, and if you engage in behaviors that negatively affect the people in the round then I will vote you down. I do not care if you are winning the debate. It's simply over. I've voted teams down in the past for being rude, racist, sexist or otherwise problematic. Just don't be a horrible person, don't talk over people, if you must interrupt try to do it politely.
Style: It's seldom that I see really good line by line. The more organized that you are during your speech the better chance you have of winning in front of me. Otherwise it's hard for me to parse where one argument ends and another begins and things get missed which is going to cause you to be not happy with me. Basically I'm saying that you're the master of your own destiny here.
Delivery:
Speed 4-6/10
I emphasize clarity
If I'm on panel with other judges that can handle more speed, I understand if I get left in the dust.
I mostly coach teams that are slow.
Argument Specific:
Disads: Read a specific link. I don't care for huge internal link chains. The bigger the chain the more untrue the argument sounds to me. But also if the other team completely bungles it then I guess I have no choice.
Counterplans: yep.
T: yep. If you're going for it, make sure you spend a lot of time on it!
K: I have pretty limited experience with K's. But that doesn't mean you should avoid them in front of me. My wheelhouse in terms of critical theory is Cap, and Biopower. I think that framework should be accessible to both teams. I would prefer that your alt actually did something
Theory: This is usually very hard for me to wrap my head around unless it's something like a spec argument. But also if we're reading spec then maybe you've already lost?
About me
KU '25. I debate in college. Currently coach the Quarry Lane School. Previously coached Lawrence Free State ('22-23) and the Ascent Academy.
Macro-level:
I try to make thorough decisions based on the technical deployment of arguments presented. What that means is:
1. I will not read cards after the 1NC until a card doc is sent. I value evidence immensely, but I feel I would be doing a disservice to both teams if I allowed my preconceived notions of what your evidence says to influence my decision. In that respect, effectively leveraging cards requires depth of explanation and comparison such that I know what it will say before opening up a card doc, and ideally you say why your ev good/their ev bad without me having to make the call based on my own whims. My ideal world has me deciding a debate without opening a card doc, but if the debate is truly exceptional or desperately lacks clash I inevitably have to.
Clarity is a substantive constraint. If I do not understand the functional utility of the arguments you're making while I am flowing (or at least based off of the words I have on my flow) it is unlikely that my decision from reading the cards is going to dramatically shift that functional understanding. Ex. if you are extending like a turns case argument on one part of a DA as a uniqueness argument for a part of a case turn and you don't say that I'm likely just going to be confused and not going to psychoanalyze your decision and instead try to simplify as much as possible.
Teams can point out the implication of this substantive constraint – if a card is tagged meaninglessly, like “A. Death K” – you can just say that the tag didn’t make a complete argument and move on. At some point this is arbitrary, but a tag-line should be a representation of what the text is because it’s unreasonable to get every word of the card body, and even more unreasonable to interpret it in the way debaters want you to. If your speech is so time crunched that you can’t make a complete sentence with a subject and predicate, you’re doing something wrong.
2. I do not care what arguments you make, but I do care that you defend their implications. I am an employee of a school, so this doesn’t apply to “racism good” and the likes which are both abhorrent and astrategic, but “death good,” hidden ASPEC, and the fiat double-bind are fair game. I am equally good for policy and critical arguments, so long as they are deployed technically. To be clear, this doesn’t mean I don’t disagree with many arguments—I find most advantages to be a distortion of reality at best, and could place my bets on how I’d vote in a perfectly technically executed clash debate—but those biases are ultimately meaningless. When I get into a debate I try to be more of an “excel spreadsheet flow-bot” in the way that I view the debate, and while my biases could implicate the advice I give to each team, I attempt to prevent them from manifesting in my decisions.
3. I will take what you say as literally as possible. Arguments like "talking about the aff solves extinction and that outweighs procedural questions" make little sense intuitively but its risk starts at 100 until anything else is said. This is not because I like trickery - I am much more excitable by debating that is intuitive, evidence based, and reflects a modicum of "truth" - I just don't know how I could logically justify deleting it merely because I thought it was a bad argument. Ideally, the end goal of successful tech is some reflection of truth, because bad arguments should lose.
4.Tell me what to do. The debates that are the hardest/worst to judge aren’t ones with debate techne problems, but those where everyone is very good at components but not trying to piece together a decision. Debates are won at margins, and typically verbalizing the ballot you want makes it much easier to view the debate favorably for you because I understand what you’re trying to do with each component to get to the ballot. Don’t go overboard—the view from 10k feet is only so helpful—but making it clear what you want me to say = faster and more helpful decisions.
You may think, paradigm is short - agreed, but find basically everything else has little utility in prefs. I like everyone else like debate that is more specific and deep, find debates over the topic enjoyable, and want to vote for the team who is nicer to their opponents.

TL:DR: Read whatever you like, I think any style or argument can win. I am not very familiar with K-affs and most K literature so please try to explain things to me and why they matter/what you win because of each individual part of the K debate. Debate is a game unless proven otherwise.
Speaker Points: Clarity (Especially in online debate) and smart arguments make your speaks increase, the opposite makes them decrease. Clipping = 0 (One warning). Make jokes at your leisure, speaker points will go up or down depending on the quality.
Thoughts about arguments:
Affs: Read a plan or don’t. Key things I want to see are impact calc, framing, and articulating what your plan/advocacy does. Use the aff as a tool on other flows and contextualize it to the negative's arguments.
K-Affs: I view this more than any other argument as an offense-defense paradigm because it’s the only way that makes sense. You need offense as well as defense on why your world is better. Detailed overviews about what the aff does boost speaks and makes it easier for me to evaluate.
Case: Clash, warrants, evidence comparison, author indicts, source indicts, smart analytics. Read more than just impact defense.
DAs:
---Generic links are fine, just contextualize it
---Do the impact calc so you can weigh the DA
---DA O/W and turns case goes a long way, same with case O/W and turns the DA
CPs:
---Any CP is fine until proven otherwise.
---Consult CPs, Delay CP's, and Process CPs are probably cheating and I will have a low threshold rejecting the argument.
---Condo debate should be condo is good/bad, not sure there's a "good" number of conditional CPs.
---Dispositionality is real.
---As with T debates, Condo is an offense-defense debate. Extend your interp, don’t drop the other team's interp, you need offensive reasons and defensive reasons.
---PICs are fine.
---Read all of the perms but also put them in the speech doc.
---Perms aren't advocacies, they are tests of competition.
---Impact out perm theory, I will listen and vote on all types of CP theory.
Ks: I'm not versed in K literature and am not particularly the best for judging these types of arguments. That being said, explain and warrant everything you say and I'll do my best to evaluate it. The only K's I'm more familiar with is cap and neoliberalism, please give a good alt. I don't have a lot of experience watching K debates but I know I will be a little bit sad if you read anthro, ballot K's, or certain author name K's (Baudrillard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, etc.) and will be persuaded toward arguments about these people being bad on a personal level and hence they shouldn't be read in debates.

---If I have an articulation of what reasonability means in the context of the round, how the aff meets it, and why it should be preferred it's not impossible to win.

239 rounds judged (yes I update this every round) (going for a record or something) and I'm a 4th year coach.
Debate : I literally don't care what you run. As long as you know what you're reading. If you're rude to other people in the round, I'll think it's cringe and vote you down. Impact calc is always nice. I actually read your evidence so don't self-sabotage. Mean what you say, because a captain goes down with their ship.
Forensics : ALL OF THIS IS CONDITIONAL AND VARIES BY EVENT - Well-developed blocking is always appreciated. A good intro and conclusion are important. Voice impressions or differentiation is nice as well. If applicable, your speaker's triangle is crucial. Confidence is key. Getting in your own head only messes you up.

Policy:
I've been coaching in KS for about 15 years and debated in high school and college before that. It's been quite awhile since I've done much coaching and judging on the national circuit. I'm opening to listening to almost anything but don't assume I'm familiar with specific authors.
You're likely to be the most successful in front of me by debating in your comfort zone and doing it well. I'll list some preferences below but they are all flexible based on what happens in the round. Particularly smart, original arguments can persuade me to vote on just about anything.
I DO NOT want to listen to you be rude to each other. We're all in an activity that we enjoy. Please don't be rude or condescending.
Delivery - Speed is fine. I'll say clear or slow once or twice if you're too fast, but then if you don't adjust I won't keep it up. Please slow a bit during transitions to give me a second to process where you're going.
Round progression - Please narrow the number of arguments but deepen those arguments as you go along. Give me reasons to prefer your arguments that are based on analysis and warrants. Avoid answering developed arguments by just repeating a cite.
Topicality/Theory - I enjoy these types of arguments if they are well-developed and have warrants and impacts. I don't like blippy lists of theory or cheap shots where you read six quick perms and crow because they dropped #5. Tell me very clearly what I should do with your argument if you win it.
Policy impacts - I'm most comfortable evaluating rounds as a policymaker. If you don't specify another method, that's what I'll use. Focus on offense and impacts. I do believe it's possible to mitigate an impact or weaken the link to the point I shouldn't consider it. I have a slight preference for real-world, high probability impacts over low probability terminal impacts.
CPs - These are fine. I have a fairly high standard for competitiveness.
Ks - I like philosophy and enjoy listening to good K debates, but I'm not up on a lot of the literature. Please clash with the opposing arguments and explain exactly what I'm voting for and why. On the neg, apply your ideas directly against specifics from the aff case so I can tell you understand how the arguments interact.
Evidence - I prefer not to look at speech docs unless there's a specific point I'm trying to clear up. Debate is a verbal activity and I want to primarily judge what I hear you say. I will look at evidence if it comes into question.
I'm bothered by the increasing use of heavily biased evidence that hasn't been through an editorial process so please feel free to make source arguments or call their evidence into question. If I end up in a position where I'm comparing evidence directly because you're both telling me your evidence is the best, I will definitely take author's quals into account.
My speaker point midpoint is about a 27.5. If I think you had decently ok speeches, that's where you'll be. Noticeable strategic errors in argument choice or time allocation or delivery will reduce that, insightful arguments and solid strategy will bring it up. I don't mind open cross-x but if you stand up there silently while your partner answers all your questions instead of prepping, you'll both lose points.
LD:
My preference is for LD to be a discussion of philosophy and morality. That can definitely include evaluating outcomes, but don't assume that I'll always vote for the person who proves the "best" outcomes over somebody with a strong philosophical justification for their position.
I dislike both affs and negs who seem to be advocating a specific plan and whose argumentation seems mainly about poking very small and specific holes in each others' plans.
Due to the time constraints, I am much less likely in LD to vote on "gotcha" drops than I am in policy.
