VLD Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideI'm a parent judge, put me on the chain if you want to spread.
speaks are based on posture and clarity.
K, T, theory, and Phil still go over my head, but if you can connect the dots, I'll vote on it.
I believe that students should effectively communicate any event competing in. I am a traditional debate judge/coach. However, I am opened to progressive debate if the student communicates it effectively.
Email Chain: noahcorb101@gmail.com
Former CX debater. I'll listen to (almost) anything (which includes well-run and warranted arguments as to why I shouldn't listen to something). I have a philosophy degree, so I'm quite into theory (which includes T) when it's developed and run well, and I *love* a good K-prior debate. Please make sure you don't shadow extend- I value warrants more than taglines. This is my first year back in the circuit after a multi-year absence, so it would probably behoove you to focus on depth over breadth in your spreading and/or neg strats.
For K and theory debate in particular, please do notsimply read down your 2A/2N blocks without regard for telling me where on the flow you want me to be putting things and what is addressing what part of the debate/the opponents. I prefer competing interpretations evaluations on a typical flow, but I believe that in most cases this is a framework either team can win.
Otherwise, good luck, and if you have additional questions feel free to ask!
Note for LD: As you can probably tell from my CX background/paradigms, I'm going to pay a lot of attention to who is winning the framework debate: i.e. who is better using it to amplify their 1A/N offense relative to the opponents'. This flow serves partially as a (meta-extended) form of impact weighing for me, so the more work you do for me there, the more likely it is that I'll frame the round the way your case wants me to. Just keep that in mind for me given my background is mostly CX.
I am a new Parent Judge.
Speaker points are greatly affected by courtesy.
I like civility in the room. Be respectful and gain respect.
I award points based on how you speak, how you conduct. If you are offensive or rude you will be marked the lowest.
I competed in Policy Debate and Extemp at the Varsity level in High School where I lettered and was awarded Distinguished in the NFL. I also competed in numerous public speaking events and contests both in an academic and business environment. Hosted a radio program, acted in legitimate theater, commercial stage productions, conducted commercial seminars nationwide, and acted in motion pictures and a member of SAG.
I look for developed, effective, public speaking delivery utilizing your personal style. I do not like spreading in any Debate. I reward logical arguments, persuasive rhetoric, solid evidence based on quality not quantity. You must be able to convince me to win the ballot. I reward those who can adapt their arguments as needed to make their point. Don't rely on reading a manuscript from a computer without fleshing out the information as appropriate. I reward debaters who are well informed on the topic and are able to apply evidence that supports their contention.
Decorum, respect, and courtesy, are required from all contestants. Bullies will not prevail or be tolerated. All students are respected regardless of their culture, background, or individual preferences.
Since I judge a lot more Public Forum now than the other events, my paradigm now reflects more about that activity than the others. I've left some of the LD/Policy stuff in here because I end up judging that at some big tournaments for a round or two. If you have questions, please ask.
NONTRADITIONAL ARGUMENTS: These arguments are less prevalent in PF than they are in other forms. The comments made here still hold true to that philosophy. I'll get into kritiks below because I have some pretty strong feelings about those in both LD and PF. It's probably dealt with below, but you need to demonstrate why your project, poem, rap, music, etc. links to and is relevant to the topic. Theory for theory's sake is not appealing to me. In short, the resolution is there for a reason. Use it. It's better for education, you learn more, and finding relevancy for your particular project within a resolutional framework is a good thing.
THEORY ARGUMENTS IN PF: I was told that I wasn't clear in this part of the paradigm. I thought I was, but I will cede that maybe things are more subtle than they ought to be. Disclosure theory? Not a fan. First, I am old enough that I remember times when debaters went into rounds not knowing what the other team was running. Knowing what others are running can do more for education and being better prepared. Do I think people should put things on the case wiki? Sure. But, punishing some team who doesn't even know what you are talking about is coming from a position of privilege. How has not disclosing hurt the strategy that you would or could have used, or the strategy that you were "forced" to use? If you can demonstrate that abuse, I might consider the argument. Paraphrasing? See the comments on that below. See comments below specific to K arguments in PF.
THEORY: When one defines theory, it must be put into a context. The comments below are dated and speak more to the use of counterplans. If you are in LD, read this because I do think the way that counterplans are used in LD is not "correct." In PF, most of the topics are such that there are comparisons to be made. Policies should be discussed in general terms and not get into specifics that would require a counterplan.
For LD/Policy Counterplan concepts: I consider myself to be a policy maker. The affirmative is making a proposal for change; the negative must demonstrate why the outcome of that adoption may be detrimental or disadvantageous. Counterplans are best when nontopical and competitive. Nontopical means that they are outside of the realm of the affirmative’s interpretation of the resolution (i.e. courts counterplans in response to congressional action are legitimate interpretations of n/t action). Competitive means there must be a net-benefit to the counterplan. Merely avoiding a disadvantage that the affirmative “gets” could be enough but that assumes of course that you also win the disadvantage. I’m not hip deep sometimes in the theory debate and get frustrated when teams choose to get bogged down in that quagmire. If you’re going to run the counterplan conditionally, then defend why it’s OK with some substance. If the affirmative wishes to claim abuse, prove it. What stopped you from adequately defending the case because the counterplan was “kicked” in the block or the 2NR? Don’t whine; defend the position. That being said, I'm not tied to the policy making framework. As you will see below, I will consider most arguments. Not a real big fan of performance, but if you think it's your best strategy, go for it.
TOPIC SPECIFIC ARGUMENTS: I’m not a big “T” hack. Part of the reason for that is that persons sometimes get hung up on the line by line of the argument rather than keeping the “big picture” in mind. Ripping through a violation in 15 seconds with “T is voting issue” tacked on at the bottom doesn’t seem to have much appeal from the beginning. I’m somewhat persuaded by not only what the plan text says but what the plan actually does. Plan text may be topical but if your evidence indicates harm area, solvency, etc. outside of the realm of the topic, I am sympathetic that the practice may be abusive to the negative.
KRITIKS/CRITIQUES: The comments about kritiks below are linked more to policy debate than LD or PF. However, at the risk of being ostracized by many, here is my take on kritiks in PF and maybe LD. They don't belong. Now, before you start making disparaging remarks about age, and I just don't get it, and other less than complimentary things, consider this. Most kritiks are based on some very complex and abstract concepts that require a great deal of explanation. The longest speech in PF is four minutes long. If you can explain such complex concepts in that time frame at a comprehensible speaking rate, then I do admire you. However, the vast majority of debaters don't even come close to accomplishing that task. There are ways you can do that, but look at the section on evidence below. In short, no objection to kritiks; just not in PF. LD comes pretty close to that as well. Hint: You want to argue this stuff, read and quote the actual author. Don't rely on some debate block file that has been handed down through several generations of debaters and the only way you know what the argument says is what someone has told you.
Here's the original of what was written: True confession time here—I was out of the activity when these arguments first came into vogue. I have, however, coached a number of teams who have run kritiks. I’d like to think that advocating a position actually means something. If the manner in which that position is presented is offensive for some reason, or has some implication that some of us aren’t grasping, then we have to examine the implications of that action. With that in mind, as I examine the kritik, I will most likely do so within the framework of the paradigm mentioned above. As a policymaker, I weigh the implications in and outside of the round, just like other arguments. If I accept the world of the kritik, what then? What happens to the affirmative harm and solvency areas? Why can’t I just “rethink” and still adopt the affirmative? Explain the kritik as well. Again, extending line by line responses does little for me unless you impact and weigh against other argumentation in the round. Why must I reject affirmative rhetoric, thoughts, actions, etc.? What is it going to do for me if I do so? If you are arguing framework, how does adopting the particular paradigm, mindset, value system, etc. affect the actions that we are going to choose to take? Yes, the kritik will have an impact on that and I think the team advocating it ought to be held accountable for those particular actions.
EVIDENCE: I like evidence. I hate paraphrasing. Paraphrasing has now become a way for debaters to put a bunch of barely explained arguments on the flow that then get blown up into voting issues later on. If you paraphrase something, you better have the evidence to back it up. I'm not talking about a huge PDF that the other team needs to search to find what you are quoting. The NSDA evidence rule says specifically that you need to provide the specific place in the source you are quoting for the paraphrasing you have used. Check the rule; that's what I and another board member wrote when we proposed that addition to the evidence rule. Quoting the rule back to me doesn't help your cause; I know what it says since I helped write most or all of it. If you like to paraphrase and then take fifteen minutes to find the actual evidence, you don't want me in the back of the room. I will give you a reasonable amount of time and if you don't produce it, I'll give you a choice. Drop the evidence or use your prep time to find it. If your time expires, and you still haven't found it, take your choice as to which evidence rule you have violated. In short, if you paraphrase, you better have the evidence to back it up.
Original text: I like to understand evidence the first time that it is read. Reading evidence in a blinding montone blur will most likely get me to yell “clear” at you. Reading evidence after the round is a check for me. I have found in the latter stages of my career that I am a visual learner and need to see the words on the page as well as hear them. It helps for me to digest what was said. Of course, if I couldn’t understand the evidence to begin with, it’s fairly disappointing for me. I may not ask for it if that is the case. I also like teams that do evidence comparisons. What does your evidence take into account that the other teams evidence does not? Weigh and make that claim and I will read the evidence to see if you indeed have made a good point. SPEECH DOCUMENTS: Given how those documents are currently being used, I will most likely want to be a part of any email exchange. However, I may not look at those electronic documents until the end of the debate to check my flow against what you claim has been read in the round. Debate is an oral activity; let's get back to that.
STYLE: As stated above, if you are not clear, I will tell you so. If I have to tell you more than once, I will give much less weight to the argument than you wish me to do so. I have also found in recent years that I don't hear nearly as well as in the past. You may still go fast, but crank it down just a little bit so that this grumpy old man can still understand the argument. Tag-team CX is okay as long as one partner does not dominate the discussion. I will let you know when that becomes the case. Profanity and rude behavior will not be tolerated. If you wish me to disclose and discuss the argument, you may challenge respectfully and politely. Attempts at making me look ridiculous (which at times is not difficult) to demonstrate your superior intelligence does little to persuade me that I was wrong. My response may very well be “If I’m so stupid, why did you choose to argue things this way?” I do enjoy humor and will laugh at appropriate attempts at it. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. Make them specific. Just a question which starts with "Do you have a paradigm?" will most likely be answered with a "yes" with little or no explanation beyond that. You should get the picture from that.
Hello, I am a parent judge so I will understand many things but do slow down when speaking and make sure I have a clear understanding of the round. Thank you.

unfamiliar with this topic, would benefit you to explain more
Most important things:
-
Every argument needs a claim, warrant and impact
-
Judge instruction is key. The top of the 2ar/2nr should basically tell me what I should be voting on.
-
I’m not the fastest flower - go about 80% of your usual speed if you want to be sure that I catch everything you say especially for rebuttals
-
Tech > truth but just because a dropped argument is true, that doesn't mean it wins you the debate unless you explain the implications of why it does
-
Organized speeches are key to better speaker points
-
I’m pretty expressive, so if you see me look confused, you might want to explain a little more
-
I won’t hesitate to give you an L and 25 speaks if you are disrespectful
FW:
-
Just because I read a lot of k affs when I debated does not mean I will not vote for fw
-
Clash impacts > fairness impacts
-
Going for ssd and a well crafted tva will go far in fw debates - flesh it out well enough and actually explain how it solves the aff’s unique impacts instead of just saying “read it on the negative”
-
Go for presumption! A lot of times it is true against k affs
-
Impact turns are an underrated strategy against k affs - a well executed impact turn against a k aff will boost your speaks quite a bit
K Affs vs FW:
-
Impact work is key to winning these debates
-
A good impact turn to fw is one that can’t be solved by ssd or the tva, but don’t forget to explain why your impact turn outweighs
-
I prefer when the aff has a compelling c/i to alleviate some concerns about limits exploding and lack of ground, but I am also fine if you just want to completely impact turn fw
Counterplans:
-
Case specific > generic
-
I lean neg on PICs. I lean aff on international fiat, 50 state fiat, condition, and consult.
-
Don’t like judge kick but if the 2nr says to do it and the 2ar does not respond to that, I guess I will
-
Presumption is in the direction of less change. If left to my own devices, I will probably conclude that most counterplans that are not explicitly PICs are a larger change than the aff.
Disadvantages:
-
1nc should be a full argument
-
Specific and comparative impact calc >>
-
Zero risk is possible but difficult to prove by the aff. However, a miniscule neg risk of the disad is probably background noise.
K vs Policy affs:
-
The key to both sides winning these debates is explaining everything in depth with examples and analysis
-
Fw is usually very underdeveloped on both sides. Treat the k fw debate as fw vs a k aff and do a lot of impact work here
-
Alt usually does not solve - aff teams should capitalize on that
-
Negative teams should do their best to prove that the alt solves, preferably with many examples
-
“Perm do both” in the 2ac is not enough. Explain the perm and it’s net benefits
K vs K affs:
-
These debates are really hard for the negative to execute well because I tend to think that the perm is true which is why there is such a heavy aff side bias
-
However, this means that a well executed k against a k aff will earn high speaks from me and honestly kvk debates are some of my favorite to see
-
Biased against no perms in a method debate, but debate it well and I will be fine with it
Theory
-
Don’t enjoy these debates tbh
-
Condo is probably good
Topicality
-
Well executed and specific t debates are cool and fun to watch
-
High quality definitions are key, especially if it's from a source that's contextual to the topic, has some intent to define, is exclusive and not just inclusive, etc.
-
Reasonability is a debate about the aff’s counter-interpretation, not their aff.
Speaker points
30 = Your performance blew my mind.
29.5+ = I think you belong in late elims.
29+ = I think you should break at this tournament.
28.5 = I think you gave an average high school debate performance.
>28 = I think you demonstrated deficiencies in core competencies.
I am looking for a well framed argument that supports or negates today's resolution. Case structure is key but so is the need to show your passion towards the resolution. Persuading me to select the victor requires the composition of a strong case and the ability to demonstrate your case's use of critical thinking and logic.
Thanks,
Matt Murphy

hi y’all! i’m jennifer | she/her
i did LD in the UIL/TFA circuit (qual) along with congress and extemp, now i consult for high schools.
paradigm is gonna be divided into sections, feel free to ask questions before round. take the time to read it.
SPEAKS
i have zero threshold for homophobic, racist, transphobic, xenophobic, and classist etc. comments, remarks, or evidence and I will tank speaks. i am NOT afraid to auto loss and have done in the past. do not make the debate space unsafe.
i give speaker points based on coherent speaking, organized speeches and effective signposting down the line by line. i do not tolerate excessive rudeness, demeaning others in round or offensive commentary. to me, speaks are also educational so there are also given based off of if i believe you belong in elims. i'll start at 28 and go up and down from there. (also don't ask for a 30 i'm not giving it to you)
speed is fine and spreading is fine just PLEASE send the doc. DO NOT SPREAD ANALYTICS and please please signpost. upload analytics if you feel like you’re going to spread through them. if I can’t understand you I’m going to miss things when flowing and I’m not gonna vote off of something that isn’t on my flow. also please just ask if your opponent is okay with it (don't spread out novices or be mean to them, i'll probably up your speaks if you're nicer in obvious power imbalance situations)
LD/CX
bold=tldr
-
construct the narrative for my ballot. don’t make me have to fill in internal links or assume what you’re trying to get at
-
i prefer evidence analysis as opposed to card dumps, i just don’t find them compelling and hate when it’s used in an abusive way. analytics can work just as good as cards. collapsing is okay.
-
j ust because you use a lot of policy lingo does not make you a better debater. dumping debate language on me is not an argument.
-
winning framework doesn’t win you the round. especially if you aren’t accessing your frame through offense, it isn't my job to weigh offense for you, so please show me how offense connects to frame.
-
please signpost. please. especially if you’re spreading. if you’re jumping from flow to flow I need indication of it, even if it’s just “next off”, i’ll get so lost if you don’t signpost. i’ll flow off the doc for constructive but i’m not gonna flow anything that i don’t understand as you speak.
-
i’m a stickler for warrants. i won’t do the work for you in extending your warrants across the flow, also no warrant arguments are VERY persuasive to me- i'll reread the card.
UIL LD
this little section is more niche to uil ld. all of the above STILL applies though.
i'm HUGE on framework debate. show me how you're winning framework because it'll determine what lens i should look at the round through. weighing should be the most important mechanism you're using when it comes to contention level debate- dispelling and defending doesn't usually cut it, talk to me about implications and weighing. i love a good impact debate. i'll admit i'm a more progressive judge, but i adapt to you!!!
FRAMEWORK:
i honestly like framework debate if there is one, but i also don’t care if y’all collapse. please make sure you’re accessing at least some level of the framework debate tho.
DA/CP
love DA’s. just please make sure you can win all parts of the disad and please weigh impacts vs. aff. i personally prefer case-specific and UQ DA’s above the generics just explain to me why you’re running it. don’t just dump generic DA’s to waste opp’s time, it’s annoying and i buy aff time skew args.
cp’s are cool. please have a net benefit to the CP, if you don’t and i can’t figure it out you probablyy aren’t going to win the cp. i won’t judge kick, do it for me. condo as default works.
KRITIKS:
love!! i personally love love identity K’s, i think they provide really great discourse into the world of debate. PLEASE do NOT read an identity-based argument if you are NOT that identify, i’m gonna feel really skeptical and i’ll probably feel a little icky. when responding to identity K’s please be careful of how it comes out, if it isn’t a logical warranted argument it’ll probably sound racist, misogynistic, homophobic, ableist etc, if it makes me uncomfortable i will not evaluate it. edit: just because I'm a fan of identity k's doesn't mean you can just weigh the k and not engage with offense/shells, you have to actually win it.
K debate tends to have really high academic literature, please use it in an educational manner instead of an abusive one, especially as a tool to confuse your opponent. if you’re running a less familiar k or a new k, you should make sure you understand it, and also please make sure i understand it. i'm not the biggest fan of completely non-topical k's but go ahead
i’m pretty good with understanding most k lit!! if it’s something really niche just have great explanations pls. if I look lost, i promise it’ll show on my face lol
T
i'm pretty lenient when it comes to t. tbh, as long as aff has a decent enough link to the resolution, it isn’t that important of a voter for me unless you prove the link is just like non-existent. if aff is entirely non-topical it's a different story. usually i default to weighing in these debates. this doesn't mean i won't ever vote off t though lol
reasonability ---x------ competing interps
PHIL:
i like phil!! but i’d appreciate good explanations. i’m comfortable in pre-flat worlds. most familiar with authors/theory butler, ahmed, rawls, locke, maslow, kant, etc. spikes are fine.
THEORY:
shells are okay when warranted. i am the WRONG judge if you run frivolous theory. i’m probably not the best judge for hardcore shell debates. also please have clash if its shell v shell, just reading pre-scripted overview a2’s doesn’t really have specific and true clash. disclosure/contact theory, i don’t feel comfortable voting a particular way inside of a round based on something that happened outside of it, i never vote off of it, and it hurts small schools/programs. i'm not a fan of "new affs bad" or "must include round reports" and (friv) stuff like that either, especially if it's your idea of a round-winning strategy.
i try to give leeway for the 4 min 1ar, but i expect the 2ar to layer voters for me. i think that assuming theory is layered before the impacts of the debate is intervening.
CONGRESS
please have sources and actual evidence. please just clash. please. i don’t find it aggressive to directly attack another representative in the chamber with clash regarding their speech, i actually find it extremely entertaining and it will get you good comments. aggressive cross is fine until your behavior gets annoying.
your presentation is a key part in your ranking.
ok. personally calling a recess to ask for splits will make me eye roll. just give your speeches, if you aren’t prepped, it’ll probably reflect on your ranking anyways. i would rather you call for previous question than hear rehash on a bill or three neg speeches in a row. yes i do agree people should get to give as many speeches as they can, but precedence is still a thing and at the end of the day it’s a competition. take the opportunity to give your speech. yes i rank you based off of your individual speeches but i also rank you off of how you interact in the chamber. i do not rank you based off of how nice you are in round (unless you’re being disrespectful).
i judge every event!! so if you have questions that aren't addressed on here, just ask :)
I have 40+ years of experience in the forensics world - as a competitor, coach, and judge. I don't miss much.
I will listen intently to your arguments and flow them all. I will judge the round solely on what is said in this and only this round. It is your job, as the debater, to present your arguments and tell me what to vote on. I am a Tabula Rosa judge.
Use debate jargon all you want, but assume I know nothing about the resolution.
I am a new parent judge.
My judging philosophy is to get out of the way in the round as much as possible to let the competitors argue what I should be voting for.
If you say it, and prove it, and apply it, I'll buy it.
Update for 2024-2025 Policy topic: I did a bit of coaching on the evergreening LD topic a few years ago so I might recognize some buzzwords but I probably don't remember what they mean.
Former debate coach for American School Fez. I competed in Policy debate at W.B. Ray High School from 2015-2018. I competed in Policy debate at UT-Austin in 2019. Currently an Assistant Financial Advisor with Ameriprise.
Put me on the email chain: stearcd247@gmail.com
I do not coach anyone currently so please do not assume I have any knowledge about what's happening in the literature or at camps.
TL:DR
I am down for whatever you want to do. I am probably just as good for PoMo goo vs PoMo goo as I am for stock issues.
Please don't throw things at me or your opponents or light things on fire.
I would like to intervene as little as possible, so please explicitly tell me how to weigh the round.
Arguments that run towards clash are always better in front of me than arguments that try to skirt around your opponent.
I believe that each debate round is a story. The better story at the end of the debate wins. This means I will attempt to view the round holistically instead of looking at just the last two speeches.
Speaker Points
28.5 is default. 29 is breaking. 29.5 is speaker award. LD tends to go up by about a .2 since speaker points are just higher in the event. I will try to change based on tournament norms and competition level. If you'd like a more in-depth breakdown, read Ali Abdulla's paradigm. I will say clear twice during the whole debate, not just a particular speech. If you do not become clearer after the second time, I will stop flowing and put my head on the desk/table.
Things that will make me your speaker point fairy:
• Executing high level argumentation at a conversational pace
• Bringing cross-ex answers into speeches
• Making me laugh
General Gripes. This section is for things I've found annoying/bad about debate and have chose to impact my speaker points, but not my ballots:
• Ontology debates. If you read ontology and do not have a coherent explanation by the end of the debate, your speaks are capped at a 28.5. If you do have a coherent explanation, speaks are floored at a 29.
• Turns case on DAs. Turns case does not mean that you also read an internal link card to the aff's impacts. Turns case means that the DA turns the solvency mechanism of the aff. A good turns case is floored at a 29. A bad turns case is capped at a 29.
• Debating slow. I personally find speed to be incredibly strategic. I also find it to be incredibly grating. If you debate at a circuit level slowly, speaks are floored at a 29.2 and I will probably give you more leeway on implicit clash. No penalty for debating fast.
• If you go for self harm good, I will vote for the other debater and give you the lowest speaks possible. If the other debate asks me to stop the round, I will stop it. This does not mean you cannot read death good, just no Liggotti.
• If you use Patrick Fox as a reason policy affs are good, I will cap your speaks at a 27.
LD
I like LD theory when it's about content. I'm not especially fond of it when it's about form. That translates to content=default to competing interps and form=default to reasonability. These positions are not set in stone as every argument is winnable. RVI's make sense to me on theory arguments but not on T. That being said, I still tend to not like them as I did Policy for most of high school. Please slow down on all of these. I'm not familiar enough with judging these debates to catch the intricacies of your arguments at the same speed I can hear your read cards about hegemony and capitalism.
T RVIs probably need to be all 3 minutes of the 2AR and dropped by the neg. Theory RVIs need to be all 3 minutes of the 2AR. The greater the number of theory/T shells, the more likely I am to buy an RVI.
Don't use big analytical philosophy words you never define. I will not understand them. I will most likely understand any big critical philosophy words you never define. This is not true in every instance, so please define them all to me. I'm very familiar with philosophy but not the way it's talked about in LD.
Tricks have to be full arguments from the get go. LD is hard enough when there isn't any sandbagging, and down right impossible when there is.
If you read DAs/Plans/Ks/Performance/Things read in Policy, read below
POLICY
Affs:
You do you. I did performance, kritikal, and policy affs. I was a 2A for most of high school and and college. Please have fully explained internal link structures. I will vote neg on presumption if I have no clue what the aff does.
The worst part of any aff is always the internal link. Please have a rigorous explanation of what your aff does and how that process changes the status quo to solve your impacts.
Survival strategies are very important but I would prefer if they were tied to a method outside the ballot.
I think inherency is important. Existential inherency is mixing burdens.
Framework/T-USfg:
Most debates that I judge center on this question. I tend to view framework as competing interpretations of the kind of debates we should be having. What does this mean for you? A) I'm probably less interested in hearing your impact turns to framework. B) The neg probably still has to answer case. C) I am very interested in the TVA. D) I am very interested in creative definitions of the words in the resolution.
I'm probably more interested in creative FW interpretations than I am in T-USfg.
I used to coach in Morocco. This means I tend to hold aff teams going for no CI + Impact turns to a higher standard than most judges.
I am fairly persuaded by the argument that "should" denotes action, while "ought" denotes theoretical underpinnings. Feel free to change my mind.
T:
T debates are awesome when there is clash, but that can sometimes be more dependent on the topic than on the debaters (I'm looking at you education topic). I went almost exclusively for T my first year in policy debate but didn't the next three years. I usually judge this in an offense/defense paradigm but I can be persuaded by a highly developed reasonability argument.
I am probably good for a debate about the terms of art in the topic. Probably bad for grammar.
My default understanding of competing interps vs reasonability is that competing interps is preponderance of evidence and reasonability is reasonable doubt. Feel free to change my mind.
DAs:
DAs are fun. Please have a counterplan or highly developed turns case. Turns case does not mean turns the impact, it means turns the solvency mechanism of the plan. Turns the impact is probably impact framing, so see below.
Politics:
Politics can either be a lot of fun, or an absolute disaster. I am not up to date on what is occurring in the political landscape unless it involves financial institutions in the US. Please take this into consideration.
I am probably more susceptible to an intrinsicness/fiat solves argument than most judges.
CPs:
All CPs are justified until proven otherwise. Some CPs hold up poorly to theory arguments, others hold up well. Advantage CPs with one aff advantage impact turned are great debates.
Textual competition seems silly. Functional competition and opportunity costs seem important. Feel free to change my mind.
I generally tend to think CP theory as a justification for a permutation, rather than a reason to drop the arg/debater. I can be persuaded otherwise, especially by arguments such as solvency advocate theory or object fiat bad.
Judge kick on an instinctual level is bad because I think strategic choices are one of the best things students learn in debate. Fell free to change my mind though.
Judge kick is probably an additional world in a condo debate context. Please consider this when writing your interps.
Ks:
At TOC-type tournaments, great! At NSDA-type tournaments, probably not the best idea.
This is the second most popular argument in front of me. I can probably count on one hand the number of round judged this year that did not include some form of K debate.
I read Ks back in the day. I read kritikal literature for fun. I'm probably up to date on your lit but please do your best explaining as I haven't read or been in a Baudrillard debate since 2017.
I am very familiar with Queerness, Agamben, Magical Realism, Settler Colonialism, and Cap. I am very comfortable with Afropessimism, Afrofuturism, Bifo, and Foucault. I am not very comfortable with Baudrillard just because he makes me feel uncomfortable. I can flow a Derrida or DnG round but don't expect me to know what any of the fancy words you say mean.
The link probably isn't as strong as the neg thinks, but also not as weak as the aff thinks, please clash on it. Anti-state links are just as annoying as state links even though I understand the strategy and think you should read them.
I'm probably not good for kicking the alt and going for the links as linear DAs. This has always seemed nonstrategic to me. If you're winning your theory of power necessary for the linear DA, you're probably ahead on FW or the alt.
Analytics:
Please for all that is good in this world, slow down. Debaters tend to go far too fast on these and if I don't catch your warrant I'm not very likely to buy your argument.
Case Defense/Turns:
This is the second least utilized part of the debate. Solvency cards are usually bad. Impact cards are always bad. Please capitalize on this. I will give you just as many speaker points if you go for a CP/DA, a K, or Dedev so please don't be worried about the argument that you choose.
CX:
This is the least utilized part of debate. Not because debaters don't try to use it (unlike the case debate) but because debaters don't know how to either A) not be rude little snots or B) don't know how to use it in a speech. If you use CX properly then you can win the debate nearly immediately, if you use it improperly you can lose the debate immediately.
I will flow cross if I think it has an impact on the round. I will probably flow cross if it doesn't have an impact on the round.
Every time you ask a question that shows you aren't flowing, I'm mentally deducting speaker points. Probably about .1 to .2
Impact Framing:
All positions require it, so be good at it. If neither team does it then I'll do it myself. Trust me, you don't want that happening. I generally default to probability > magnitude > timeframe. This is in no way set in stone so feel free to change my mind. You do not need cards to change my mind on this, just a well developed argument.
Performance:
My favorite aff I ever wrote was a queer ballroom X-Men magical realism aff. Go wild but have a compelling reason why I should sign your name, rather than the other teams, on this ballot.
General Thoughts
I was a 2A, if that matters.
The best way to win a round is clear judge instruction. I want to intervene as little as possible and that requires explicit instruction from the debaters. If you do not instruct me how to judge, my own bias will come into play. I don't want that, you don't want that, and your coach doesn't want that. The only person that does is your opponent.
I was a flex debater because I think debate is more fun when there is contestation on the content of an argument. I also was very very bad at framework/T-USfg. Please keep this in mind when you decide to pref me for clash rounds.
Tech over truth generally, but truth can sometimes overcome tech when you are just patently false. If you have a two minute long explanation about how Bifo is a materialist because he has material impacts, and your opponent says you're on crack, I'm probably voting for your opponent. If you spend two minutes explaining how your specific argument takes into account materialism even if Bifo the author does not, and your opponent says your on crack, I'm probably voting for you. In both scenarios you're probably not materialist, but in the second I'm far more likely to give you the ballot.
I do my best to leave my biases outside the room, but that will always be a difficult thing to do.
If you want any other information about how I think feel free to email me or read John Henry Stearns' or Ali Abdulla's paradigms. One is my brother, the other is one of my best friends growing up. Both think very similarly to me and reading their paradigms might help.
Other people who influenced me, in order of impact: Andrew Garcia, Aron Berger, Michael Antonucci, Walker Perkins, Tillman Huett, Preston Stolte, Shaneal Harun, Steven Pipkin
Stolen from Patrick Fox. Mr. Stearns is my dad. If you call me Mr. Stearns, I will assume you would rather be judged by him and adjust my judging accordingly. Mrs. Stearns is my mom. If you call me Mrs. Stearns, I will assume you would rather be judged by her and adjust my judging accordingly.
I only flow warrants. If I am not actively flowing, it's probably because I don't think you have made an argument yet.
I am not a flow bot. I am human and will miss things. If you think something is important, make sure you tell me.
I would actively prefer if debaters spoke at a conversational pace. This does not mean that I can't flow your spreading, but talking normally is just a lot more comfortable.
If you read an ethics challenge and wish to stake the debate on it, I will stop the round and go to tab. If you do not stake the debate on it, I will not adjudicate it.
Subtlety is for cowards.
I have voted on presumption in about half of last year's debates.
I think I suck at writing ballots. I think I'm coherent while giving the RFD. Please let me know if I'm not. If you get your ballot back and it is illegible, please email me.
I tend to give RFDs very quickly. This is because I am at all times attempting to evaluate win conditions for each debater. I will try to be as informative and constructive in my RFDs as possible.
Having Fun
I know this is a competition, but please have fun with it. I know that I did and I hope you do too.
