Judges Paradigm List
All Paradigms: Show HideFine with most arguments. K's are fine, just make sure to explain them.
I dislike dropped arguments. If you intentionally drop an argument. Mention it.
I default to Stock Issues, Aff must win all Arguments to win unless I am presented with different framework.
Not the fastest at flowing so i prefer no spreading. that said you can still speak quickly but i have to have enough time to write it down
Any other clarifications or questions you have you can ask me before the round but I am generally pretty cool w/ whatever.
Flay judge
Hello my name is Shannon Catlin. I have judged debate for the last four years, while also participating as a debater in my high school career. When I sit down to a debate I prefer to hear evidence based proof with a footprint to back your sources. I also look for if a debater understands what they are presenting, explaining in your own terms.
I like to see what your policy is and how your plan of action will work with proof and funding. I watch for confident body language and being able to make eye contact with your peers.
I will allow spectators if the participants also agree, however they will not be allowed electronic devises.
Let's have s great debate.
Policy Maker Paradigm that also takes T into account. Small town KS former debater and coach, neg arguments I like are DA, CP, T, and solvency. I'll follow anything on the aff side, but if you have a Kritikal Aff you better know how to run it. I expect Impact Calc at the end of the round to pick up the win.
I will fairly evaluate every argument in the round, but I will disregard theory, K, and T arguments if you don't know how to run them.
I am a mom of a debater and have been judging debate and forensics since 2019.
I like when debaters speak clearly and I would rather you run out of time then speak too quickly that I cannot understand you. If you are simply trying to get everything said I cannot process everything you say anyway.
Respect matters a lot to me and I do not like when debaters sound like they are arguing.
Any argument is ok as long as it is explained well.
Don't be nervous, just do your best.

I typically fall within the tabula rasa archetype with some caveats.
Flash Time/Email Chain Time should be OFF Time
I expect every debater to keep track of everyone’s prep time.
I would prefer to be included in all email chains and sharing of evidence to ensure best practices.
I will typically take speaker points away for jumping around on the flow haphazardly, or disrespect in CX or in speeches. There’s a fine line between aggressive and rude.
I can handle all speeds, but I would like you to slow down on tags and cites a bit.
I will not interrupt you during a debate round. However, if you are unclear, I may miss something on the flow. Make sure you annunciate tags and cites well.
I really don't like new Off Case in the 2NC. So, unless AFF does something pretty scummy in the 2AC, please don't run new in the 2.
On T: This is a valid strategy for the negative. I treat it with equal voting power as a DA or CP.
On CPs: CPs can be conditional or unconditional.
On DAs: Generic DAs are fine, but I do tend to vote on DAs with strong, specific links.
On the K: I will only vote on a K if it is unconditional. The K debate is the one argument that I do not believe should be gamified. If you run a K or K AFF, believe in it. This means that Ks NEED specific links. NO GENERIC K’s.
Ask me any questions for clarification.

-Please keep email chains off-time, however please be time efficient and use best practices. If that means requesting I be included, please let me know.
-Keep track of your opponent's prep time. I will be giving constructive feedback and actively writing notes and flow. To keep this from being hindered, your use in timing and keeping track of prep time when there is no timekeeper is highly appreciated.
-Debate is about strategy and confidence-- while some aggression is to be expected, I do not want to hear yelling, curse words, or slurs. Do not threaten physical violence and do not insult your opponent's physical appearance or character.
-While I am able to understand most speeds, I deeply appreciate the ability to annunciate and signpost cards and arguments effectively to keep the flow as accurate as possible. If I am unable to keep the flow accurate, that may lead to my voting against your team.
-I go into each round objectively neutral and with no strong favor in either direction. My personal politics do not play into who I vote for, rather the best debate and who provided the strongest arguments all the way through. I do flow arguments to when and how they are addressed.
-On Disadvantages: I like generic DA's, but DA's with strong, specific links are more apt to be voted on, as they are better for complex, competitive debate.
-On Counterplans: CPs can be run, but believe in your counterplan and be confident!
-On Kritik: I love good K, but make it SPECIFIC. You can feel free to run generic K, but I feel as though it does not lend itself for constructive debate.
-On Topicality: I love hearing T arguments-- keep them interesting and stick with them throughout the round! T is a completely valid strategy to use in-round.
-I LOVE framework, rules, and semantics debate. Keep it fun, keep it interesting.
-If you are not flowing, I will not flow. This will ultimately hinder your team.
-Do NOT put new arguments in the 2NC-- it is unfair to the other team to try and answer in rebuttals.

No personal debate experience however, you will find qualifications and paradigm below:
Years of Judging Experience: 5 years, currently living with an Assistant Debate Coach who has years of HS and college debate experience.
Educational Background: Wichita Collegiate grad, Bachelors Degree in Anthropology, Masters' Degrees in Psychology and Sociology. Ph.D.C in Psychology with a focus on diagnostics and statistical analysis.
Hobby-level interests in politics, scientific research studies, history, and policy structure.
Debate-specific paradigm:
Overall, I most identify with policy maker style judging with some tabula rasa.
-I do not mind speed, but please keep it below college-style debate speed. I want you to be able to annunciate and talk fast. Please refrain from screaming, pointing at judges, or singling out judges in a panel. It is unprofessional.
-I do tend to flow, although am not professionally trained to do so. It will look different than you typically expect of a more experienced judge.
-On all arguments, I want you to stick to them and believe in them. If the negative team drops an argument due to being refuted effectively, I will not vote against them. Affirmative, please make sure you address all arguments.
-On disadvantages, I prefer very specific DA's that have a strong link to the affirmative plan. Generic DA's are ok, but add more or find a specific link.
-On counterplans, make sure they are formatted correctly and it is clearly stated they are a counterplan. I have seen too many rounds where the counterplan is not explicitly stated. Stick to the counterplan as it is initially created. Do not use this opportunity to be vague and a moving target, changing your CP.
-I tend to dislike K and T arguments. I believe T is vague and allows too much flexibility for the negative team to change their definitions at will. K is a frustrating topic, as it does not tend to be specific and usually just aims at semantics.
-Please include me on speechdrop, email chains, and other evidence exchanges. This makes it fair to you that I am seeing the evidence and can refer to it as needed.
-I do not like vague plans that are unable to explicitly state what they are doing. If the affirmative can change it between rounds or tweak it to say something slightly different, it is not a solid plan. It has holes and would make an ill policy.
-Framework is a valid argument as debate is a structured event with rules. Do not allow your argument to fully rely on framework and rules. I am much more apt to vote on policy than I am rules.
-Things teams tend to overlook: introduce yourself with your speaker position, no new arguments in rebuttals (evidence is fine), new arguments in the 2NC are not against policy but are definitely frowned upon for me.
My name is Bennett, I'm a junior at WSU majoring in French and playing varsity esports. I did debate and forensics all four years of High school and currently I'm an assistant debate/forensics coach for Andover High school in Kansas. some of the major things I'll be looking for are as follows:
Evidence: Evidence is extremely important to me, not just making sure you handle extensions and such properly, but the contents of the card itself. If a team is running a piece of evidence that contains statements that could be harmful to their case, or is entirely misrepresented in how it's cut I expect the other team to catch it and call them on it. Evidence weighing is also very important - if both teams are making directly conflicting statements with cards to back them up, you need to take the time to explain why I should be preferring your evidence over your opponents, otherwise I have to figure it out for myself; and that doesn't reflect well on either team.
T: I am more than willing to vote on T (I'm from Kansas it's like half the debates there) but if your expecting me to vote on it, I'm expecting you to go all in on it. Half hearted T arguments in the 2nr aren't going to get my ballot - the voters of T relies on convincing the judge that the round is essentially unfair, either through being un-educational, the aff being abusive, etc. But if you are going to claim the inability to argue against an affirmative case, and then continue to argue against said case for the rest of your speech, then you are just disproving your own argument.
Cp's and K's: I feel that cp's and k's are an incredibly important part of policy debate, and honestly think that when a neg team's strat doesn't contain at least some semblance of one or the other they are putting themselves at a major disadvantage. Neg defaults to defending the status quo, and I often find that many neg teams fall into the trap of proving that the aff's team won't do everything they say, and yet have provided no better alternative solution to the issues presented, nor proven that the world would be way worse off with the plan than without. I'm not saying it's impossible to win on neg without a k or a cp at all, no debate is decided before it's over and there are and endless number of strats that are viable on neg and if you can prove that the status quo is currently better than a world with the aff plan then you've done your job and will get my ballot. With that being said, you can drive from Kansas to Florida in 22 hours over the course of two days or you could fly there in 4. Thankfully, running a cp costs a lot less than a flight does but you get the point.
Spreading: I'm fine with any speed you want to go, if you need to go slow for other judges or because you aren't comfortable spreading, that WILL NOT AFFECT MY DECISION. spreading is a great skill and can let you accomplish a lot more in the short time you have, but it is not a necessity. do not feel like you have to push yourself to read faster than you're comfortable - having a clear, concise, and confident voice reading/speaking at a normal pace will always be better than trying to push yourself to far. With all of that being said, if youdo feel comfortable spreading then by all means feel free to do so at your discretion in round!
ABOVE ALL: I will not tolerate any form of racism, sexism, or homophobia; such remarks will immediately result in a ballot for the other team as well as notifying coaches. Also, please just be generally respectful to each other, remember that taking control of and handling cx is important - but there is a fine line between controlling cx well and being straight up rude.

Stock issues. T should only be what’s actually off topic. I don’t like Ks unless they’re actually applicable. Academic problems that aren’t likely to be real life issues have no interest for me. I’d rather it be concrete, undeniable, and undeniably important.
I am slightly hard of hearing, so please speak clearly (especially with masks) and with a decent volume. Speeding/spreading means I can’t understand you. If I can’t understand you, I can’t vote for you.
Put me on the chain: tianamarion7@gmail.com
Background: I debated four years at Salina South High School (2017-21). I was also the 5A 2-speak state champion in 2021 on the prison reform topic. I currently debate in college at Kansas Wesleyan University (parli + LD), and I had a brief stint at Yale. I have assistant coached at Salina South, head coached at Sacred Heart high school, and assistant coached at McPherson High School.
Judging Philosophy: Tech over truth. I think debate is a game, whoever plays it best wins my ballot. With this, I have often voted against good plans or good counterplans that I think are good ideas, because they weren't argued correctly. I try to keep my own personal biases (in any way) out of the debate round. Do not change how you debate to adapt to me; I want to see how you debate at what you believe is your best. I'm comfortable with any speed from conversational to rapid spreading. Speech drop > Email chains. ****I am of the belief that all on case and off case arguments need to be read in the 1NC. Also no new in the 2NC. I will not vote you down because of this, but I will not be happy.
Topic Specific: This year, I have been judging and coaching on the 4A and 3-2-1 A circuit. I am not a big fan of "soft left" impacts which are huge on this topic, so it will be much easier for me to vote on high magnitude impacts (yes, I am an unironic nuke war impact enjoyer).
Topicality: I believe it is an a priori and will judge it first before examining the case. I judge topicality on whether you can prove specific in-round abuse and if it sets a precedent for bad debating. I have enjoyed debating and coaching topicality, so please do not be afraid to run it!
Counterplans: I believe every counterplan has to have a net benefit, and I don’t care about whether it’s topical or not. I don't think conditionality is abusive in most cases, but I can be convinced with a really good condo bad shell.
Kritiks: I am most comfortable with Capitalism, Settler Colonialism, Security, Queerness, and Anti-blackness. Anything further will probably require some explanation. Must have Framework to tell me how to weigh the K vs Case.
Hi!
I debated (Policy, Student Congress) at Andover High School for four years (Education, Immigration, Weapons, CJR)
Currently the policy assistant for Andover High/debater at WSU.
Yes, add me to the email chain, my email is gracemcmanus22@gmail.com
I am comfortable with any style of debate/speed in the round.
Framework- Usually debates inevitably come down to competing models of debate. You need to be able to explain why your model of debate is best. I will vote for the framework that has the best impacts(obviously but just making sure I put it out there) I have voted for education before (with fairness as an IL) but I am comfortable voting for literally anything.
K- I am super comfortable with K's, just make sure you are able to explain the alt well. Explain the role of the ballot and how the alt is able to function when I vote for a K, you know... the usual K things. I won't do the work for you when it comes to these types of arguments.
Theory- I love theory, but make sure you execute it properly. Not much else to say here, but if you have questions you can definitely ask me before the round begins.
T- I have voted for T in the past. I expect their to be competing interps when T is presented. I'm also cool if you read no interp and just impact turn T. Do whatever you want I will flow.
I have a lot of opinions on a lot of different arguments, but I will always defer to what is said in the round. I will vote for anything, my paradigm is only a suggestion of what I like to vote for. Just make the best arguments in the round and you will win the debate.
Above all be nice to one another. That doesn't mean you can't be assertive just don't be mean, it's pretty simple. If you have any questions, just email me.
Speak guuuuuud.
But seriously, I'm a forensics coach first, so I wanna hear your fancy speaker skills at a REASONABLE pace!
I like to flow arguments on a spreadsheet. That means I want to hear you give CLEAR tags when you move to a new piece of evidence. And those tags need to be ACCURATE (i.e. NO powertagging)!
Also... CLASH!!! Answer the arguments! If you're the 1NC, and you give me T and 2 DAs but don't at least ADDRESS any of their On-Case, I'm not gonna be a happy judge. Same on the 2AC when you want to extend your On-Case. ADDRESS their Off-Case! And EXPLAIN your cards!
(e.g. "So judge, in a nutshell this is how their plan's solvency ultimately makes climate change worse for us all...">
Likewise, Give. Me. Roadmaps. I want to know WHERE you're going with the arguments, and SIGNPOST when you move from point to point (e.g. "Now let's address their Solvency..." "Okay, moving on to the Link in the BioTerrorism DA...") Letting me know WHERE your argument is on the flow is ESSENTIAL! If I have to look all over the place to guess where you are on the flow, then I'm missing the argument that you're making.
In rebuttals, I'm all about the Impact Calc. GET OFF THE CARDS. Let me hear your analysis of your argument. If you're still reading new evidence after the 2NC, you'd better have an awfully good reason for it. And definitely don't ignore the impact calc entirely. Talk to me!
And honestly, you don't need to wait until rebuttals to start your Impact Calc. Explain how your cards and your arguments defeat theirs in the constructives!
Finally, I want the debate round to be FUN. I would like to come away from that round with stories about how clever your argument was or how creative your analysis was.
Tell some jokes.
Drop some geeky, pop culture references.
Make me laugh.
Make me clap.
Give me a reason to look forward to judging another round.
As a former forensics competitor and coach, I pay a good deal of attention to delivery (you need to speak at a rate such that I can understand you!). Just rattling off info without emphasis or proper inflection damages your credibility for me. Logical arguments are important. Finally, professional and courteous conduct is always appreciated!
I vote on a stock-issue paradigm, in which stock issues that carry through constructives will probably determine the ballot.
I strongly recommend off-time road maps and frequent summary/recap. These skills are so important in life, especially the ability to summarize someone else's perspective to check one's understanding.
I have warmed to off-case in the past year, so let 'em rip. It's unlikely for me to vote on off-case or style alone. Stocks still count significantly. Here's a twist: if stocks aren't your thing on neg, consider a well-conceived and well-executed K. I appreciate calculated risk-taking when the only alternative is mediocrity on the stock issues.
I have grown to love debate and love the young people who invest their Saturdays. I coach some (beloved!) students who are perpetually excited, behave badly, and need to learn ... moderation. Some of you might need to learn it also, so that you have it as an option instead of fighting/flighting/freezing throughout life. I am a judge who might try to help your coach teach moderation to you. Truculent, surly, adversarial behavior by debaters bums me out and can cost the ballot. Shouting hurts my ears.
Debate is worthy of the time we all spend. A problem with debate is that it tends to reward disagreement. In life we must find places of agreement, especially when we are competing and it is hard to agree. I award ballot credit for the team that seeks a place of agreement with an opponent, and expresses it at some point in the round. And by "agreement" I mean: sincere agreement followed by "and," not superficial agreement followed by "but."
Thanks everyone!
