• The first thing I care about is your confidence in the round. I want to see speakers speak clearly, project their voice and stand (or sit) tall as you make your points.
• Next, to judge on your content I will look for pragmatism (follow short, concise points one after the other) rather than bombarding me with too many angles.

What I look for:

1. Enunciation - one pitfall I notice is that debaters trail off near the end of their sentences, and the end of their opening statement. Please speak clearly the entire time, dont' trail off.
2. Speed - I want to understand your argument, your sources and your numbers if you choose to cite them. I think you should error on the side of caution, that you clearly lay out your argument by speaking at a speed I can track, instead of rushing through. You do not need to speak slowly, just not at a speed where you are rushing through your words...
3. Argument - Lay out your argument, explain, why your position leads to good results, and why your opponent's position will lead to poor results. I find a lot of debaters will tell me the good/bad result of both sides' positions, but fail to explain the how or why those positions lead to those particular results. A sentence or two should suffice, this does not need to exhaustive.
4. Cross - Finishing making your point. I find most debaters are abel to ask the questions that point to the weakness of their opponent's argument. Few take the next step of getting your opponent to concede that their argument is weak or has a fallacy. In close debates, winning/losing often comes down to this skill....

Similar to other judges, I believe that quality, well-structured and supported arguments are much better than quantity. It is better to have 1 or 2 strong arguments, supported by both evidence and logic, than 4 or 5 weak points.

I greatly appreciate good speaking skills and professional presentation. Please enunciate, make periodic eye contact and speak slowly and clearly. If I do not hear it and cannot note it for consideration, unfortunately I cannot refer to it when making my final decision. Demonstrate that you know your material well enough to not read directly off of the page.

If it comes down to your evidence says "x" and their evidence says "not x" and I have no way to know who is right, you will lose. What do I mean? Explain why your evidence is more relevant, accurate, and credible...and/or why theirs is not. I prefer clarity of evidence and impacts, with valid reference to resources.

Be sure to advance arguments, clearly respond to your opponents arguments and attempt to discredit your opposition. Unaddressed arguments will carry more weight. Please make sure that you and your partner are cohesive.

Things I highly value in all debates include: Clash, Impacts, Voting Issues. As a general rule of thumb, remember that whatever you say to me, you should make clear WHY you are saying it. How does this argument connect to the round as a whole? Why does it constitute a reason I should vote for you? How does it relate to what your opponents are saying? Etc. Please don't let your rounds turn into "two ships passing in the night." Grapple directly with the arguments made by your opponents, and make my decision easy at the end of the round.

Most important things for me are these:

- SPEAKING SKILLS. If I am not intrigued and/or convinced by your style of speaking, voting for you is going to be incredibly hard. Do not give a monotone spiel, make me actually believe in your arguments.

- FINAL FOCUS. This will be the speech I pay the most attention to. Give me voters and tell me what is most important in the round.

Technical Things During Round:

tech > truth always, if ur opponents say some outlandish bs and you don't walk me through why that is or put any sort of counter on it, I'll evaluate it nonetheless. Don't assume I have any kind of brain, I go off solely what's said in round.

Warranting shows me you actually understand ur arguments, I need to hear warranting for all the cards u read and claims you make in round in order for me to be able to evaluate it, I don't j wanna hear a diarrhea of ev or back-less claims.

I'm ALSO a huge fan of analytics. If you can flesh out arguments from logic in ur head, it shows me your depth and understanding as a debater, and it REALLY helps me know which team acc knows what they're talking abt.

Attack ur opponents args head on, in addition to ur extensions I NEED to hear direct clash with ur opponents args, this way i can weigh and evaluate who wins. If both sides j have offense I'll j vote on big numbers.

I'm a big fan of frameworks, If a framework is a agreed upon OR goes uncontested I will vote on the round SOLELY based on that fw.

Other Things During Round:

Speaking is SUPER important for me. Articulating well, projecting ur voice, adding emphasis, using your hands, and speaking w/ confidence are incredibly key to a round of debate, esp PF. Show me you're confident and know what ur talking about, it really helps w/ how ur team comes off during round.

Mostly good w/ speed, j don't spread as fast your mouth can possibly move... I can only evaluate what I can hear and understand.

I'll be timing ur speeches and prep... I'll give ygs 5 seconds grace but after that I'll hard stop you. Try to time yourselves, it's good practice.

Tell me order before u give ur speeches, and number ur responses and frontlines.

Etiquette/Respect:

I love a heated debate, argue ur side w/ passion and conviction, that's what this is all about.

Refrain from like swearing and/or throwing out personal insults, it doesn't do anything for the debate and it's j annoying and rude for no rzn. Instead of like calling ur opponents arguments stupid or wtvr, just show me it is by taking me through it technically.. that's always a better + more powerful way to go about it.

For cross, for the most part imma j let yall go at it but if I start hearing any swearing and/or personal attacks i'll intervene.

After Round:

I'll always give my 100% transparent feedback aft the round, and then I'll disclose. I know how annoying it is when you don't know the result of ur round, trust me I've been there.. that's why I wanna disclose for yall. BUT, I also know that when judges disclose right off the bat, teams r either rly happy or rly sad and the feedback part j goes over their head. To avoid this, I'm gna give all my feedback first, then disclose.

I am a parent judge and have judged a few public forum debates. I like to weigh the impacts of the contentions and arguments. What's helpful for me: (1) Clearly articulate your contentions, including the contentions that you are arguing for/against; (2) I find the off-time roadmap helpful in knowing how it will flow.

• In Construction, I like well stated Contentions.

Key points for me include clarity of arguments, the significance of impacts, and clear voters in the Final Focus. I'm cautious about overly restrictive frameworks or conduct that limits fair debate. I'm open to frameworks, resolutions analysis, and observations, provided they're fair. Logical arguments are valid even without cards, but evidence debates should be meaningful and not detract from prep time. Timing wise, if you go over time, I'll give you some grace but I will cut you off about ten seconds over speeches or 15 seconds over crossfires

I want to see good impacts carried through the round. Don't drop something after rebuttal and bring it up again in FF. I want to see frontlining in second rebuttal, second summary is a little too late to frontline.

I don't flow crossfire, so if you want it to go on the flow, you'll have to say it in a speech.

Beyond that, PF is what you make it, so have fun.

Theory:Not a huge fan of theory in PF.That being said, I recognize theory in PF is becoming more and more popular as time goes on, so I am willing to evaluate it. If you run theory, please warrant it well and give me real impacts. It takes a lot for me to vote only on theory, so don't abandon your case.

As I already said, I did PF all of high school, so while I have a solid background in debate, I don't know LD very well.

If you're running Ks, Perms, Plans, etc etc, please explain it to me because I don't really know what it is.

I'll vote on theory as long as it's clearly warranted and done well.

I'd like to see value criterions carried through the whole round, don't just say it in your constructive and then ignore them, only to suddenly ask me to vote on them at the end.

i will not intervene on arguments not having a warrant unless you call it out. however, just saying "there is no warrant between ___ and ___" will be sufficient for me to not vote on an argument without a warrant. but please warrant your args to make my life easier

I will evaluate anything you say as long as it isn't exclusionary or problematic in any way and is properly warranted.

However, I would MUCH MUCH rather you paraphrase all your evidence or read only analytics and have it make sense than read cut cards that are grammatically incoherent, under warranted, extremely wordy, or incomprehensible. You will be much happier with my decision as well because if I don't understand the card, I will not be able to properly evaluate it. This will also allow you to be much more efficient by actually explaining your arguments concisely rather than through lengthy, unclear cards, which will let you slow down, implicate, and break the clash, making me even more likely to vote for you.

No new arguments are allowed from second summary and onwards except for weighing. However, all weighing must be done during second summary and first final focus at the latest. Second final focus is wayyyyy too late. Also, it is best to start weighing as early as possible.

Second rebuttal should frontline everything from first rebuttal, including defense, on all arguments you plan on going for.

You definitely should briefly summarize your argument when extending it but I am not super picky about how in depth the extensions are as long as all parts of the argument are brought up, and especially the link and impact
