Event Description:

Public Forum is an evidence based debate, students should be judged on their ability to bring up and refute arguments. Judges should vote for the team that persuaded them the most using argumentation supported by evidence. There are several speeches given in the round they are as follows:

  • To begin, teams have 4 minutes of preparation time that can be used whenever they need, the judge and competitors should keep a running timer of prep time used so as not to go over. Also, there is a 30 second grace period to be over or under speech time.

  • Two 4 minute speeches given by the 1st speakers of each team. This is where the prewritten cases either supporting or opposing the resolution/topic are presented. These cases bring up what will be discussed in the round. A 3 minute questioning period will follow between only the 1st speakers.

  • Next, the 2nd speakers from each team will give the 4 minute Rebuttal speech. Speeches should address points brought up by the cases read in the previous speech. Another 3 minute questioning period will follow between the two 2nd speakers.

  • After this the 1st speakers will again speak for 3 minutes. This is the summary or crystallization speech. In this the arguments of the round will be summarized and addressed. A 3 minute questioning period will follow, this time including all four speakers.

  • Last, the 2nd speaker will give the final speeches of the round, they are 2 minutes. These speeches will tell the judge why they should vote for their side.
