Grey Matter Invitational at Cary Academy

2023 — Cary, NC/US

The Cary Academy Speech and Debate team is proud to announce the fourth annual Grey Matter Invitational. Grey Matter refers to the part of the brain responsible for processing information and involved in sensory perception such as seeing, hearing, and speech; all of which are absolutely essential to participation in competitive speech and debate. We have selected this name for our tournament in honor of the memory of Grey Spector, a 2016 graduate of Cary Academy and former member of the Cary Academy speech and debate team. All proceeds from this tournament will go to support the Spector Family Fund which was established in memory of Grey and to honor the entire Spector family’s contributions to the Cary Academy community. We will offer competition in Varsity and Novice Lincoln Douglas Debate, Varsity and Novice Public Forum Debate, Varsity and Novice Congressional Debate, and ten speech events (Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Informative Speaking, Oral Interpretation of Literature, Original Oratory, and Program of Oral Interpretation). We will recognize the top novice competitor(s) in each speech event.

Competition will be held in person with the exception that in Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum we will host hybird divisons where entries may choose to participate online if they wish.

All rounds of competition in Congressional Debate and Speech will take place on Saturday September 23rd, as well as the preliminary and first elimination rounds of Lincoln Douglas and Public Forum. If entries warrant, we will hold the late elimination rounds of the LD and PF divisions on Sunday September 24th.

All entries are due and fees and obligations will be frozen on Monday September 18th at 5 PM.

We look forward to hosting you in September and ask that if you have any questions you direct them to RJ Pellicciotta (Richard_pellicciotta@caryacademy.org)
