IMPORTANT: On 24 January 2018, a revised invitation was uploaded to the website. The primary purpose of the revision was to add Congressional Debate as a special event on Friday morning from 8:45 AM to 11:40 AM. The event will not conflict with any other event, but participating schools are limited to six entries. The deadline for submitting bills/resolutions is Friday, 9 February 2018, at 12:00 PM. This change was made at the request of several coaches.
It is our pleasure to invite you to attend the 46th Marshall University John Marshall High School Speech and Debate Tournament to be held on Friday, 16 February 2018, and Saturday, 17 February 2018 at Marshall University, Huntington, WV.
Huntington is located directly across the river from the southeastern corner of OH and within five miles of the northeastern corner of KY and is about 2 hours from Lexington, KY; 2 hours 40 minutes from Columbus, OH and Cincinnati, OH; 3 hours from Louisville, KY; 3 hours 45 minutes from Roanoke, VA; and 4 hours 20 minutes from Pittsburgh, PA and Knoxville, TN.
The Marshall University tournament allows high school students to compete in up to 6 (3 per flight) of 14 speech events, Lincoln-Douglas debate, public forum debate, and Congressional Debate. (See specific limitations in invitation.)
Speech Flight A includes: Broadcasting, Declamation, Dramatic Interpretation, Extemporaneous Speaking, Improvisational Duo, Programmed Oral Interpretation, and Prose Interpretation.
Speech Flight B includes: Duo Interpretation, Humorous Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking, Original Oratory, Poetry Interpretation, Sales, Storytelling.
The entry deadline is Tuesday, 13 February 2017 at 12:00 PM ET, and the deadline for online drops and name changes without penalty is Thursday, 15 February 2017, at 12:00 PM ET.
