All Paradigms: Show HideIn evaluating a debate, I prioritize the following criteria based on the overall effectiveness of the speakers in presenting and defending their arguments:

Argumentation & Logical Structure: The core of any debate is the quality of the arguments presented. I will prioritize clear, well-structured arguments with sound reasoning and evidence. Speakers must present their case in a logical manner, with clear claims, warrants (supporting evidence), and impacts (why it matters). The better the organization and the depth of the argument, the higher the speaker will rank.

Rebuttal & Responsiveness: How effectively each speaker responds to the opposing side’s arguments is crucial. Rebuttals should address specific points made by the opponent, demonstrating an understanding of their position while offering counterarguments. I expect debaters to engage with their opponent's points directly and demonstrate critical thinking.

Evidence & Data: The use of relevant, credible evidence is essential. I will look for debaters to use statistics, studies, examples, and expert opinions to back up their claims. Arguments without evidence or those that rely on weak sources will be less persuasive. The strength of the evidence presented and how well it is integrated into the argument will influence my decision.

Clarity & Presentation: While content is paramount, clarity in delivery matters. A speaker’s ability to present their arguments in a clear, concise, and understandable manner is essential. Overly complex language or convoluted arguments that confuse the audience will be penalized. I value eloquent speakers who can explain their points effectively and remain organized throughout the debate.

Persuasiveness & Impact: A strong debater must not only present logical arguments but also persuade the audience and judge. Persuasiveness involves both the emotional appeal and the rational appeal of the argument. The debater should demonstrate the significance of their points and the implications of their stance. I will pay close attention to how well each speaker highlights the real-world impact of their arguments.

Engagement & Delivery Style: A debater's ability to maintain the audience’s attention is crucial. This includes good pacing, eye contact, and confidence in delivery. Hand gestures, vocal variation, and maintaining an engaging presence will also influence the score. Speakers should avoid excessive filler words or nervous habits.

Strategy & Teamwork (in team debates): In team debates, collaboration and strategy are important. Each team member should complement the other’s arguments, avoid redundancy, and strategically decide who tackles which aspects of the argument. A team that works cohesively will receive higher marks than one with disjointed contributions.
Final Considerations: I evaluate the debate as a whole, considering who provided the strongest overall case and who best managed the dynamic of the debate. A debater who demonstrates the ability to adapt, refute effectively, and leave a strong, memorable closing argument will be ranked highly.

Speed: I do a fast format. I'm okay with spreading in formats where it is standard practice (Policy and prog LD). I'll call "clear" or "slow" if you are being unclear or I can't keep up, which doesn't happen too often. If you spread, I appreciate it if you make it clear when one card ends and a new one begins (eg saying NEXT or AND between each card, going slower on tags, etc).
In formats were spreading isn't standard practice, I don't have a problem people who talk faster than they would in a normal conversation, as long as a lay person could understand your rate of delivery.
Impact stuff: Like most judges, I love it when the debaters in all formats do impact calculus and explain why their impacts matter more under their framework. When this doesn't happen, I default to weighing probability over magnitude and scoop and using reversibility and timeframe as tiebreakers. I’m open to voting on impact turns.
• I admire it when competitors respect, value, and have a deep sense of mutual understanding for each other during rounds. This means I totally detest irritable attitudes such as rudeness, hostility, and intolerance. Kindly be on your best behaviour and be very conscious of how you interact with your co - competitors.

On Speed:
I typically judge fast-paced debates and am comfortable with spreading in formats where it is standard, such as Policy and progressive LD. If you're unclear or too fast for me to follow (though this is rare), I'll signal with "clear" or "slow." When spreading, I appreciate it if you clearly indicate the end of one card and the start of another (e.g., saying "NEXT" or "AND") and slow down on tags to ensure clarity.

It is also necessary and advised to engage with context, framing and arguments of other teams even if you do not agree with their speeches, providing a counter factual in your own speech where deemed necessary.
I take account of everything a speaker says irregardless of the pace of speech due to human diversity and nature although, I prefer medium paced speeches as it makes the flow of point taking easier.

For online tournaments, speakers are encouraged to turn on their cameras except in extreme situations which they should take excuse for.

Hey y'all! I did LD in high school and do IPDA in college at Mizzou (go tigers!!). I'm an occasional speech girl these days, mostly in limited prep events like extemp and radio, but I'm definitely more knowledgeable as a debate judge. Put me in the email chain: madisonarenaz23@gmail.com
The following is mainly for LD, but feel free to apply relevant points to other forms of debate:
- I'm cool with higher speeds. If you're used to debating nat circ, maybe decrease your speed by about 1/4 for me, but generally I should be good. If I'm not, I'll stop flowing to indicate that I need you to slow down.
- Debate should be accessible! If you need a round without spreading, or if there's anything I can do in general to make the round best suited to your needs, please let me know.
- I try to be a relatively non-interventionist, flow judge. I can believe much more in-round than IRL, but I do still need to believe your arguments, especially if they're a little outlandish. You can sell me on anything if you're clear with those links! Just make sure you're not saying something that I would know to be categorically untrue or misrepresented with the limited knowledge I have as an undergrad polisci major.
- I just don't buy most LD theory arguments I see. I'm not bringing my outside opinions into your actual arg ever, but you'd be hard pressed to convince me to vote on, or even consider, disclosure theory unless the tournament requires disclosure. I tend to err on the side of "drop the argument" vs "drop the debater" for nearly everything.
- I value impact weighing and comparative worlds, like most other LD judges. I have faith that y'all will do that, but novices - make sure you're learning this!
- Please please don't drop framework. I don't love framework debates (seriously it's just a lens I use to evaluate your performance please don't dedicate a ton of the debate to it), but make sure you're proving how you uphold yours. Ideally, uphold yours and your opponent's.
- Run literally whatever kind of arg you want to. I can evaluate a totally trad round, a K vs case, K vs K, a round where y'all are essentially LARPING as policy debaters, a philosophy heavy round, whatever you want. I will note I'm not the best judge for performance affs, but I value their place in the debate world - maybe just with a judge who is better prepared to evaluate them than me.
- If the point above meant absolutely nothing to you, do not worry about it. If you know exactly what I'm talking about and even think I'm putting it a little too plainly, and you enter a round with someone who clearly doesn't know what that previous point is about, ESPECIALLY in novice, consider that the point of debate is education. How you run it is your call from there. Be nice though and I'll boost your speaks every time.
- I prefer roadmaps off-time.
- Too many rebuttals are entirely scripted, and too many cases just aren't dynamic. Adapt your case and your performance to the round. Be funny or be serious, come prepared for every possible point or don't, but give me the vibe that you're actually in the room with us right now and not still on the Wiki or copying your captain. Say words beyond just what's on your cards. Even if I know what you're talking about, make it clear. I'm not a coach, I don't cut cards or develop args for any topic, and if I can't explain the argument you just gave back to your opponent, I'm not voting off of it, even if I do think I understand it. This may make me a worse judge for tricks debate and unevidenced Kritiks.
- Tldr: be a good person. Throw out this whole paradigm if you want! Your argumentation can overcome basically any of this, and anyone who tells you otherwise is doing you dirty. The point of this paradigm is just to ensure a good debate round that I can give good feedback on, but it is not my place to offer absolutes about what you can or should do. It's your activity - make it yours. Above all else, be kind and have so so much fun.

Fast-talking can be impressive and effective in some cases, but it can also be overwhelming and difficult to follow for some people. As a general rule, I prefer a moderate speaking pace is preferable as it allows the debater to communicate their points clearly and ensures that I can follow along.
3. Aggressiveness?
Aggressiveness can be useful in some debates, particularly when the topic is emotionally charged or controversial. However, it's important to maintain a respectful and professional tone, even when challenging an opponent's arguments, also ensuring your points are well delivered. Personal attacks or insults or gestures like throwing hands when an opponent is speaking are never acceptable and can undermine the credibility of the debater.
4. Determining the winner of the debate?
To determine the winner of a debate, I consider several factors, including the coherence and accuracy of the arguments presented, the quality of the evidence provided, and the persuasiveness of the debater's delivery, not forgetting well argued out logical responses.
I do not admit new arguments in the summary speech. Any supplementary information included in your summary speech won't garner extra points. Your role is to consolidate the main points of conflict in this round, facilitating a better understanding of the issues that have been discussed.
In general, the debater who can provide the strongest and most well-supported argument, while also successfully rebutting their opponent's points, is likely to win the debate.
Ultimately, the goal of a debate is to engage in a respectful and informative exchange of ideas, and the winner is the one who best achieves that goal.

My name is Sofia, and my judging career which spans for over four years has seen me muster up a significant amount of experience in a wide range of debate formats/styles such as; the British Parliamentary Format, World Schools Format, World Scholars Format, Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, Asian Parliamentary, Big question and Speech Events.
Judging Pattern:
I always approach any debate I'm about to judge as a globally informed citizen, whilst making sure I toss any conceivable personal biases I may have about a topic aside. This means that to convince me in a debate room you must make sure your arguments are credibly realistic and persuasive within the scope of the debate. A couple of things to bear in mind about my judging pattern -
• State your contentions/arguments clearly and back them up with enough analysis to prove your case.
• Make sure you're creating a fair means of engagement towards your opposition. This means that I do not expect you to just present your contentions in a vacuum and expect them to win - I also expect that you challenge the contentions of the opposition and create comparatives to show why your contentions are superior.
• Ensure you highlight your arguments in a well-organized structure - I do not expect that in the middle of contention A, you then transition to contention B abruptly. Take your time to fully explain your contentions while also being time-conscious.
• Role fulfilment is also important. So make sure you fulfil your roles perfectly.
• For Speech Events - I appreciate absolute creativity during your presentation. I expect that you use all that is within your means to execute whichever role you're taking on in whatever speech event I am judging you in. I take notes of your eye contact, body language, energy, and expressions while speaking.
Side Notes:
• I have a slight preference for medium-paced speeches. This does not however mean that if you're naturally a pacy speaker, you're automatically disadvantaged when I'm judging you. I would give your speech equal attention and assessment on a meritocratic basis regardless of how fast you speak, but if you can, just take deep breaths as you present your speech rather than zapping through.
• I admire it when competitors respect, value, and have a deep sense of mutual understanding for each other during rounds. I am a flay judge with a little over 10 years experience judging and coaching. I didn't do debate in high school or college, but I have really enjoyed it on the judging side, and I have learned a great deal. Having said that:
1. I prefer arguments to technicalities. Debates about debate are not great.
2. If you are participating in an evidence-based event, do give evidence, and be clear and specific when you cite it.
3. Clash with the opposing arguments; more often than not I end up deciding which arguments I PREFER, rather than which ones I believe.
4. Signpost as you go. It helps me keep my flow organized.
5. Keep your impacts at the forefront.
6. Give me voters and weigh.
7. Ask questions during CX, and engage with your opponents, don't just give more speeches.

FLOWING
I view myself as a flow judge, but the clarity and strength of your advocacy narrative is crucial. If you present in an organized, concise, and articulate manner, while also extending compelling arguments, you'll excel. A distinct and coherent advocacy narrative on the flow is invaluable. Such a narrative aids in shaping your responses and in constructing a comparative world, essential for analyzing and weighing the round during the Final Focus.
EXTENSIONS
Proper use and cutting of proofs is very crucial to me, while debate may be seen as a game, it takes place in the real world with real consequences. It matters that we properly represent what's happening in the world around us. Please, follow all pertinent tournament rules and guidelines - violations are grounds for a low-point-win or a loss. SPEECH AND PACE
- I can’t follow everything in PF if you speak at a high pace. Your main goal should be clarity. Articulate your points so your opponent and myself comprehends you. Your efficiency and eloquence in subsequent speeches will shape your scores.
- Everyone should maintain civility and politeness. If situations escalate, it's everyone's duty to calm things down. Avoid shouting. Recognize your privileges and use them to uplift and respect others.
- Please provide trigger warnings when appropriate.
- I'm not particularly fond of theory becoming a standard in PF, especially disclosure theory. If there's a significant violation and theory is the only recourse, I might accept it, but expect reduced scores. Ideally, address the issue in a manner more aligned with traditional PF standards.
BREAKDOWN OF SPEAKER POINTS
30: Excellent job, you demonstrate stand-out organizational skills and speaking abilities. Ability to use creative analytical skills and humor to simplify and clarify the round.
29: Very strong ability. Good eloquence, analysis, and organization. A couple minor stumbles or drops.
28: Above average. Good speaking ability. May have made a larger drop or flaw in argumentation but speaking skills compensate. Or, very strong analysis but weaker speaking skills.
27: About average. Ability to function well in the round, however analysis may be lacking. Some errors made.
26: Is struggling to function efficiently within the round. Either lacking speaking skills or analytical skills. May have made a more important error.
25: Having difficulties following the round. May have a hard time filling the time for speeches. Large error.
Below: Extreme difficulty functioning. Very large difficulty filling time or offensive or rude behavior.
DECLAMATION
I’ve just judged a round of this and I’m so much in love with it. Be authentic with your topic, appeal to your audience’s emotions, be eloquent, use a good lighting so I can properly judge your gestures and body movements, have a good cutting, introduction and conclusion and you’ll be good to go. I’ll most likely give you a 100 if you prove yourself worthy of it.

Hello, my name is olayinka Oderanti. I am a debater, a coach and an experienced judge since (2022-now. For me, speaking is an hobby and I love listening to people speak.

I appreciate speakers that prioritize clarity instead of pace or speed without clarity. Heads-up could be given when speakers decide to speak extremely fast and documents can also be sent for already planned motion for some formats like Lincoln Douglas(LD)and public forum (PF).
I mostly prioritize arguments and logic over style. Speakers should emphasize their arguments well enough instead of randomly stating them.
I appreciate speakers who understands the difference in formats and motions and know what they should do and not to.
A little bit of summary of the speech should be given at the end of the round to summarize why you win the round picking from arguments given during the round and the crossfire sessions.
I have a variety of skills such as rapt listening, critical analysis, and attention to details which allows me to access submissions fairly and without bias.

PERSONAL NOTE
I think of debate as a way to share ideas on different matters and make those ideas stronger by pointing out flaws and loopholes in them. I also see it as a game of arguments and whoever's argument that has the least flaws, provides accommodations for those flaws or prove why their arguments regardless of those flaws matter wins.
I have experience in British Parliamentary and public forum debate format, both speaking and judging. Though I prefer speaking. I am an ESL speaker, so I would also like people to know that, so it's not hard to understand you when you're speaking.
Lastly, I'm a nice person, and I like every debater in any round I am judging to be nice to one another and learn from each other. So, there is no need to be rude to each other in a debate round.

As a judge, I prioritize when speakers attack only the arguments and not attack fellow speakers, I also take equity issues as important, so I expect speakers to follow it solely.
Also, I appreciate speakers that sends me their documents for LD, PF or other related styles or speakers that speaks at average pace or gives me a heads-up before speaking extremely fast.

In debate, I value speakers who already knows the different types of motions and what is expected of them in terms of burden fulfilment and things to do.
Also effective use of fiats, counter prop and other important techniques.
I also appreciate when summary speeches prove why speakers win, by emphasizing on the arguments, justifications and logical implications, no new arguments should be brought up.
I also encourage speakers to keep track of time because arguments made after the stipulated time won't be acknowledged.
For online tournaments, speakers are encouraged to turn on their cameras except in extreme situations which they should take excuse for.

TABROOM PARADIGM
As a judge, I am committed to addressing barriers to accessibility in debate.
EXPERIENCE:
I did high school Lincoln Douglas for 4 years, and JV Policy at the collegiate level (Trinity University) for 2 years until 2018 or so. I have experience judging policy, LD, PF, and some speech events. I judged tournaments in the Houston, Austin, and San Antonio areas from around 2015-2018, took a break, and have been regularly judging online tournaments since 2020. At this point in my judging career, I'd say I'm still very knowledgeable with the basics, but I'm less comfortable now with high-jargon arguments in policy and LD (see, theory in LD, K literature). Having good and clear voters is important to me - I'd say the best 2NRs/2ARs are the ones that write my ballot for me. Tell me why I should vote for you!
SPEAKER POINTS:
I judge speaker points based on how clearly you navigate the flow (sign post, please!) and how clearly you articulate your voters in the final speeches. No speaker points will be deducted for stuttering - so long as you sign post (tell me where you are on the flow), have good organization on the flow, and tell me what arguments I should vote on, you will get above a 29. You will get low speaks if your speech is disorganized, and lower speaks if you are rude to your opponent.
My scale is usually (but not always):
30-29.5: excellent sign posting, clearly outlined voters, very good round. 30s will write a well warranted ballot for me
29.4-29: mostly good sign posting, at times a bit unclear, but you did a generally good job.
28.9-: not enough sign posting, your speech was somewhat disorganized.
LD/POLICY:
SPREADING:
For policy: I will permit spreading evidence if all debaters in the round are okay with it – if you wish to spread (evidence only), please ask beforehand in front of all participating members. If you or your opponents do not want to spread, no reason is necessary, and I will not flow any arguments that are spread if your opponent and I have explicitly asked you not to spread before the round (these requests to/ not to should be made before the round - I will not drop debaters for spreading, but I always welcome spreading kritiks). Spreading can be an accessibility issue, and it is important to make our rounds respectful. Good debaters do not need to spread to win!
If all debaters agree to spreading, then you HAVE to slow down for tag lines – if it’s important and you want it on my flow, then you HAVE to slow down and provide emphasis. It's been awhile since I did debate, so I'm not fast to flow anymore - ESPECIALLY for final speeches, do not spread analytics if you want your arguments on my flow/ ballots. I cannot give you a good RFD if I cannot flow your arguments
For LD: Please do not spread (and if you do talk quickly, just do so with cards, not tags or analytics). These rounds are too short, and at this point in my judging career I miss too much in LD rounds with spreading - treat me like a traditional judge, and give me quality arguments, and you will win against opponents with blippy speedy arguments
EXTENSIONS:
When extending an argument, you must extend the warrant as well. A dropped argument is a conceded argument.
And - weigh your arguments!! If you are losing an argument, but you are winning another and tell me why that’s more important, I will be more likely vote for you. Weigh, weigh, and weigh some more!
FRAMEWORK:
I enjoy framework debates, but they usually aren't enough to win a round alone. Clearly weigh your winning offense through the winning framework - whether that’s yours or your opponent’s - and you will win
I evaluate the round by: 1 looking at the winning framework (ROB, standard, etc), 2 relevant voting issues/ offense, and lastly (and arguably most importantly) 3 weighing (tell me why your offense matters more)
KRITIKS:
Ks are okay, but make sure your arguments are clear. Especially if you're reading denser philosophy, be sure to explain it clearly - I'm good on stock Ks, but if it's high level/ complex, explain it to me like I'm a lay judge (and I generally recommend erring away from these in front of me)
PLANS/CPs/DAs:
Love them, and I especially enjoy a good comparative worlds debate. I am able to write the best RFDs for these debates
TOPICALITY/THEORY:
IN CX: Topicality is fine, I will vote for it if there is a clear violation and it's articulated well. I am not the biggest fan of Theory.
IN LD: TLDR: Treat me like a lay judge if you're running theory, please do not spread your theory debates - I will not be able to follow. It is best not to run theory in front of me
My longer response: I think that theory in LD is very different than theory in policy. I was never really into the technical aspects of theory, and my skills in being able to judge it have eroded over the years. If you want a good and coherent RFD from me stay away from theory, and probably stay away from T as well (though I am more willing to hear this). If you are running theory/T in LD, you cannot spread if you want it on my flow/ ballot - I will not be able to keep up. If you choose to run theory and spread in front of me, I will do my best to judge this, but I would encourage you to run any other arguments in front of me. Judge adaptation is an important skill to have!
PF:
Everything above applies! Some additional notes:
- If you plan on speaking quickly/ spreading, then please make sure your opponents are comfortable with that before the round - I generally prefer it if PF rounds stay at a conversational pace, but if both teams want to speed up the speeches, that's okay.
- PF is not policy/LD. Remember - one strong argument with good weighing is better than multiple poorly warranted ones - know how much time you and your partner have to commit to addressing all arguments in play. I am okay if you want to run more policy-like arguments.
- In my experience, rebuttals should address all arguments, summaries whittle them down to the key arguments, and final focuses look at the voting issues. Again, I think the best final speeches are the ones that write my ballots for me!
MISC:
- Open cross is fine.
- I don't count flashing in prep, but keep this within reason.
- You are responsible for timing your own prep - I prefer to not have to keep time myself. Same with timing speeches - you are responsible for keeping track of your own time. I generally time all rounds, but all debaters should time themselves
- If time is up, you can finish your sentence, but do not go significantly over. I do usually time speeches and will stop flowing when your time is up - if you're going towards 20 seconds over, this will reduce your speaker points.
- I will not vote on any morally repulsive arguments.
- Do not be rude. Debate is a competition, but we should respect one another and do our part to make this a welcoming educational environment. Debate is fun and educational, let’s keep it friendly!
- Weigh your arguments!! Generally speaking, you're not going to win every single argument in a round. That's okay. Win the most important argument, and tell me why it's the most important argument/ more important than the argument(s) your opponent is winning
COVID/ VIRTUAL DEBATING UPDATES:
- Please try to show up on time to rounds - that includes showing up to whatever "report time" or "check time" the tournament outlines. That being said - technical difficulties happen, and this will not factor into my RFD.
- If you think you'll be asking for evidence, collect emails/ create a Google Doc BEFORE speeches begin. No prep time is needed to share evidence, but try to be as quick as possible so that we can have an efficient round. Please get my email in round so I can be on the email chain. I think Google docs are the easiest and best way to share evidence

- Remember, in these debates, it's not all about speed. Focus on persuading me and showcasing the importance of your arguments. Keep it engaging and add some flair. When it comes to theory arguments, make sure they're valid and not just trendy.
- I'm not a calculator, so it's not just about winning lots of arguments. Persuade me with communication and style.
Here are some key points to remember:
1. Use signposts and roadmaps to guide your speech. Make sure to address your opponent's case and organize your arguments effectively.
2. Establish a framework early on and explain why it should be preferred. If there are multiple frameworks, choose one and provide a clear rationale.
3. When extending arguments, go beyond taglines. Explain the warrants and the importance of your impacts. Summary extensions are crucial for the Final Focus.
4. Paraphrasing evidence is okay, but make sure to explain its meaning and relevance to the round. Extend evidence in later speeches.
5. Focus on creating a strong narrative. Narrow down the key contention-level impact story and address your opponent's contentions effectively.

30: Excellent job, you demonstrate stand-out organizational skills and speaking abilities. Ability to use creative analytical skills and humor to simplify and clarify the round.
29: Very strong ability. Good eloquence, analysis, and organization. A couple minor stumbles or drops.
28: Above average. Good speaking ability. May have made a larger drop or flaw in argumentation but speaking skills compensate. Or, very strong analysis but weaker speaking skills.
27: About average. Ability to function well in the round, however analysis may be lacking. Some errors made.
26: Is struggling to function efficiently within the round. Either lacking speaking skills or analytical skills. May have made a more important error.
25: Having difficulties following the round. May have a hard time filling the time for speeches. Large error.
Below: Extreme difficulty functioning. Very large difficulty filling time or offensive or rude behavior.
