Event Description:

Policy:

Policy Debate consists of 2 teams of 2 debaters. The times will be listed below this description. Policy has many different rules and techniques. The debate is heavily based on evidence and argumentation. Vote for the team that persuades you the most. Whether they persuade you on truth or tech is entirely your decision. Weighing tech over truth is recommended.

  • Judging based on truth includes your perception of the objective correctness of the arguments made. Therefore, if you feel that something is false although it is stated as true, you may ignore the argument. Judging based on tech requires any prior knowledge of the topic to be disregarded. Anything said in round is true unless proven otherwise. Your judgment will start from the first word to the last.

  • Both teams have roles. Presenting the case in the first speech of the round is the Affirmative. Disproving the case is the job of Negation. When judging you must decide if you believe the Aff has successfully proved their case would benefit the resolution. If they do not succeed then the win goes to Neg. The affirmative also has the burden of 5 stock issues; Inherency, Solvency, Plan Text, Harms/Advantages, and Topicality.

  • Clash is important to the round. If the arguments are too general there isn’t clash. Judge based on the quality of arguments. If arguments aren’t refuted they are considered dropped arguments. Each team should offer rebuttals to every argument mentioned within the round. No new arguments are allowed in rebuttal speeches, only new evidence.

  • Please do your best to offer a good description as to why you voted the way you did. Education is very important for these debaters and knowing what they can improve on will help immensely. Thank you so much for judging! Ask competitors if you need help.

Each team has 8 Minutes of prep that they can start at any time someone isn’t speaking during the round. Each speech has a 30 second grace period after that time they can no longer continue.
