Expository Speaking
Event Description:
Purpose: Expository speeches are original compositions of the contestant. The speech should inform by describing, clarifying, illustrating, or defining an object, idea, concept, or process. Fabricated topics or subjects are not permitted. Additionally, students may not use any part of their original oration or informative speech from any district or national Association tournament.
Time: The maximum time limit is 5 minutes with a 30-second grace period. If a contestant exceeds the grace period, they may not be ranked 1st. There is no other prescribed penalty for exceeding the grace period. Rankings are at the judges' discretion, and accurate timing devices must be used. No minimum time is required.
Aids: No note cards, audio, or visual aids are allowed. Animals or other persons may not be used as aids. Items of dress put on and removed during the presentation are considered visual aids and may not be used.
